Member Monthly May 2019 Masters Memories!

I'm sure it is on the bucket list of every PGA professional in the country. A trip to the Augusta National. It cer-

tainly was on my list and I was fortunate to attend my first Master’s a couple weeks ago. I’m still reliving the

excitement of the historical event.

Upon arrival to the course, I was shocked to see many signs proclaiming “FREE PARKING”. Not something you

would expect for the Super bowl of Golf! Next it was, where is the golf course? The entrance was like going

into Disneyland and once in, following a path through a very beautifully landscaped area past the media center

and on to the perfect practice facility and finally the first hole.

It was quickly evident that no detail gets missed at Augusta National and The Masters. I walked the entire

property including the par 3 course for 4 days and never saw a weed! What you do see is that this facility is

specifically set up to hold one of the great major golf tournaments of the year. There are no temporary tents

for concessions and merchandise and no port-a-potties. All these services are contained in permanent green

buildings that are cleverly located amongst the towering Georgia pine trees so they are not visible during the

broadcast. There are no cables on the ground for power for the numerous cameras as they are all under-

ground. And of course, everything is green, including the TV towers, the beer and soda cups, the sandwich

bags, the trash bags, and the Masters chairs!

The patrons at the Masters were without doubt the best-behaved golf crowd I have ever witnessed at a PGA Tour

event. There are no workers holding up a “Quiet Please” sign anywhere on the course because they are not need-

ed. You can only bring a digital camera to the event during the practice rounds and cell phones are not allowed at

any time. However, there are phone banks located throughout the course where you can make a call for free any-

where in the US!

There were many highlights over the 4 days, including watching Jack Nicklaus on the first tee during the par 3,

and following the Tiger Woods group during a practice round and on Friday. All in all, a fantastic week that culmi-

nated in a dramatic Tiger victory on Sunday. If you ever get a chance to go (tickets are granted through a lottery

system), do not hesitate to seize the opportunity. You will not be disappointed!

April was a busy month for the maintenance team as we were very busy working on the important golf course

details. Like everyone in San Diego, we had a lot of catching up to do in eliminating weeds that are abundant

from the rain. We also worked on all the sand traps that needed detailing and the edging of all the cart paths. It’s

been a challenge because at this time of year, everything grows non-stop until the soil dries up from our wet win-

ter and weed seeds stop germinating.

As you may have noticed, our vineyard is now growing at full force. We did a fertilizer application in March and

this along with all the rain means the vines are growing very fast. Hopefully we have another good year of

weather that produces record crop of grapes.
