General Manager’s Report February 24, 2016 Page 1 Vehicle Locator - is custom web application, built by the AC Transit technology department that displays our fleet’s last reported position from the CAD/AVL system on a pan/zoom map/satellite view. This application displays vehicle’s id, status, type, tag #, block #, last reported date time, and stall # (only for D4 yard, other divisions will be added soon!). With a valid District login (your username & password,) it can be accessed from either within or outside our network and on anything from a desktop computer to a tablet or cell phone. It integrates with AVL data through AC Transit’s Enterprise Database and display each coach’s detail with color coded icons and related map legend. Employees can find vehicles of interest by typing Ids or dragging .csv file from desktop into the Vehicle Locator map. They can also search for all vehicles in the Division by typing Division codes (D2, D4, D6, CMF, GO, TEC or TT) as well as view all vehicles within the zoomed map. Since the Vehicle Locator is real time application that integrates data from multiple Enterprise Systems, it can serve various departments for different business use cases The application saves time and helps keep AC Transit running! Toyota Mirai Hydrogen Fuel Cell Car Demo -Toyota will be providing the District with a Mirai automobile for a two week demonstration from March 7 through March 21. The Toyota Mirai is a hydrogen fuel cell car that was one of the first hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles to be sold commercially. The 2016 model year Mirai has a total range of 312 miles on a full tank, with a combined city/highway fuel economy rating of 66 mpg-US MPG- equivalent, making the Mirai the most fuel efficient hydrogen fuel cell vehicle rated by the EPA, and the one with the largest range. AC Transit will fuel the Mirai at the Emeryville Hydrogen Fuel Station and rotate the assignment of the car to various staff to obtain feedback on the feasibility of purchasing some fuel cell cars in future non-revenue vehicle procurements. Successful Readiness Plan for Super Bowl 50 -Operations and Planning implemented several measures to be prepared for potential ridership increases on AC Transit during the week leading up to the Super Bowl and on Super Bowl Sunday. On weekends, articulated buses were assigned to many of the Transbay trips to provide for increased capacity going to San Francisco. In addition, standby operators and buses were ready to respond to any reports of heavy passenger loads on Transbay routes, and a group of standby operators were available to respond to any mutual aid request on Super Bowl Sunday. While AC Transit standby buses were only used on a couple of occasions when heavy ridership started to cause delays, the Operations team was ready to respond to any incident and ensure a positive image for the District. Security was also enhanced during the period with the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office assigning extra deputies to perform patrol checks on buses and at transit centers. French Students Tour Emeryville Hydrogen Fueling Station- The AC Transit hydrogen fuel cell program got international recognition when twenty students from France visited the Emeryville bus and public fueling station on Wednesday, February 17, 2016. Roland Fecteau provided an overview of the District’s fuel cell bus program, along with an overview of the Emeryville and Oakland hydrogen fueling stations. The French students were impressed with the fuel cell bus program and hydrogen fueling capabilities at the District.

Leadership for Transit Streets: City Program Accelerator – AC Transit is partnering with the City of Oakland to apply for the National Association of City Transportation Officials (NACTO) Transit Program Accelerator. Under the program, NACTO will work with three cities that have demonstrated emerging leadership and a commitment to designing streets for transit, holding two-day transit street design roadshows and working with transit and transportation departments throughout the year to help transform an existing corridor into a great transit street. The goal of the process will be to generate a transit street design project, shepherding it through the conceptual design phase, with a project implementation strategy. For this application, City and AC Transit staff have selected the MacArthur Corridor as the focal point for the program given its high ridership, multimodal transportation use, challenging alignment and vibrant surrounding communities. NACTO will identify the three cities selected for the program by March 9th, 2016.

Hayward Chamber of Commerce - On February 5, General Manager Michael Hursh gave a presentation to the Government Relations Council of the Hayward Chamber of Commerce. The Council is comprised of business leaders in Hayward and evaluates legislation or regulation that may impact businesses in the community. This was an opportunity for the General Manager to introduce himself to the Chamber and convey AC Transit’s priorities and current projects.

Celebrating the rich cultural diversity of AC Transit – The District is developing a comprehensive program to celebrate the rich cultural diversity here at AC Transit. This month’s celebrations include Black History Month and the Chinese Lunar New Year. We celebrated at Division 2 and Division 4 last week. This week celebrations will occur at the G.O. on Thursday and at Division 6 on Friday. I hope that you will join us as we celebrate and enjoy opportunities to learn more about some of the cultures that make up the employees of the AC Transit District.

AC Transit Hiring Campaign- The AC Transit Recruitment Team is hiring extensively and our new Media Affairs Manager, Robert Lyles, created a highly effective media event that highlighted our current hiring campaign for the service expansion plan, which includes hiring for over 125 bus operators, journey level mechanics and service employees. KTVU came to our Training and Education Center, where, Alex Savage, a KTVU reporter, drove the bus with one of our Training Instructors, Melvia Shaw. The story was aired in the morning on January 28th, and has helped bring in close to 700 applications for bus operator recruitment since it aired. Applications for Journey Level Mechanic and Service Employee have also increased extensively.
