Passed the PMP exam- Sharing Lessons learned

First, I'd like to mention that all the PMP related posts on this forum were invaluable in my PMP prep. Thanks to all the well-wising PMPs who shared their experience and tips/ tools for the exam prep. My post is a direct result of the (contagious) inspiration I got from following the discussions. Learning and Exam Materials used: Ed2go PMP prep classes Rita Mulcahy- 6th and 7th Edition Kim Heldman- Her audio version helped whenever I was tired of reading but still wanted to study. She also has 2 mock exams (1.5 hrs each) on her CD. PMBOK guide- 4th Edition PMP Exam Prep: Questions, Answers, & Explanations by Christopher Scordo . This book can be found online in the eReads section

for PMI members. It has several mock exams and also quizzes based on knowledge areas. Mock Exams from: PMzilla, simplilearn, oliverlehmann, headfirstlabs 1. Made extensive use of flashcards- I made my own handwritten cards as was suggested by our trainer They took a while to make but the writing exercise really helped and I made them over time 2. Diligently followed posts from this group- It is a great resource for tips and encouragement- I did it daily for the last few weeks of the exam and found at least one useful tip daily. 3. Practiced the knowledge areas and PM processes chart on pg. 43 of the PMBOK guide till I could reproduce it on paper in about 10 min. 4. For knowledge gaps, imagining how the unfamiliar process would (or would not) fit in well with the existing norms of the work you do, can help fit that part of the puzzle into the appropriate spot. 5. Took many mock exams as well as topic specific quizzes until a week before the exam. The 4 hr. mock tests helped me get into the PMI thinking mode. Before answering each question, I had trained my brain to ask “What would PMI do?” before attempting to answer. 6. Focused almost exclusively on ITTOs especially in the last week- understanding the flow of the processes as well as the components of the ITTOs was extremely helpful. 7. Ensured ample rest the night before the exam. 8. During the exam, if I found that I was trying to understand the question for over 30 s., I marked it for future review. Also, I refrained from answering in the first attempt if I was unable to eliminate at least two options. 9. I changed my answers to questions only if I realized that I had read the question wrong the first time.

Sally Al-Gazzar • Congs...Wish me luck. I'm planning to do mine on Aprl-2012. Thanks for the tips

Loretta Hall • Congratulations! I just finished my PM course for the required 35 PDUs, and signed up to take the exam in 6 weeks. I appreciate your feedback and recommendations for study materials. I only have $200 - $300 left to spend on exam prep materials. Any advice on which resource gave you the most for your money?

Ulka S. • Hi Loretta, I would suggest Rita Mulcahy's 7th edition. I also used Kim Heldman's book. You should be able to buy both these on Amazon within your price range. Also, if you are a PMI member, you can access some useful books in the eReads section. In addition, you can always borrow books from your local library. You may have to plan ahead for popular books as they have longer waiting periods since they have many requests. Also, you can take free mock exams online. If you have some budget (and time) remaining at the end, you could also buy a few mock exams online after trying the free mock exams. Hope this helps.

Md. Tabaruk Hossain • @ Ulka S. Congratulations..!!! Thanks for sharing your efforts and lessons learned. It would help us.

Ulka S. • Hi Venkat, I would say around 3 months of prep time after the PMP prep class. Ist month- approximately 2 hrs. for 5 days a week- trying to understand the process groups and knowledge areas. 2nd month- 2-3 hrs 5 days a week- focusing on knowledge gaps and practicing how to reproduce formulas and the table on pg. 43 of the PMBOK guide in 15 min. Also going over chapter based quizzes. 3rd month- First two weeks 4-5 hrs a day. Began taking a few mock tests online Third week- 6 hrs a day for all days of the week. Mainly mock tests and analyzing what went wrong AND what I was doing right. Fourth week- 3-4 hrs a day. Focused mainly on firming up understanding ITTOs. Practiced writing formulas and reproducing table on

pg 43 of the PMBOK guide in under 15 min. That's approximately how long you get to do your brain dump before the actual test. I made sure I got ample rest the night before the exam. It really helped. Hope this provided some guideline. Feel free to write if you have more questions. Good luck!

Excel SPC (Statistical Process Control) Software! The Lean Six Sigma Standard for Black Belts, Green Belts and "No Belts".

Do you feel like you:

Need to be a statistician to use SPC? Spend too much time on documentation for your Lean Six Sigma Project? Spend too much time drawing charts for other people?

You've got better things to do.

Most Six Sigma SPC software treates your valuable time like it's an abundant resource; it's not. You don't have the time to hack your way through seven layers of decision trees to decide what chart to use nor do you have the time to figure out how to put your data into the "right" spots so that the software can go to work. Software should do as much of the thinking as possible for you; you shouldn't have to think for it.
