Welcome

1

Dear colleagues and friends:

We are pleased to invite you to attend the 34th Annual USC International Periodontal & Implant Symposium. The focus ofthis year’s symposium will be on negative outcomes, complications and failures of periodontal and implant therapy. Greatstrides have been made in developing advanced periodontal and implant therapies. Despite these advancements, negativeoutcomes remain a reality in clinical practice. Understanding the biological basis and technical reasons which result innegative outcomes is important in preventing them. It is equally important to learn about the latest strategies for managingcomplications and failures to reach the desired outcome. Despite the significance of this area for every clinician, mostmeetings and conferences are dedicated to discussing positive outcomes and very little has been devoted to negativeoutcomes. A panel of internationally renowned speakers will review and discuss the biological and technical basis ofnegative outcomes, complications and failures and will present the latest strategies to manage them. The program boastsfour days with a diverse range of educational opportunities. These include two all-day programs, with hands-on workshopson models and cadavers. There is also a full-day program dedicated to dental hygienists. Although the majority of thegeneral-session presentations are interdisciplinary in nature, there are also sessions designated as “Surgical Track”and“Restorative Track” that focus on specific disciplines. This is an educational opportunity not to be missed by the entire oralhealthcare team, including specialists, restorative dentists and dental hygienists.

We hope to see you all in Los Angeles in January 2009.

Homayoun Zadeh, DDS, PhDSymposium Chair and Moderator

Hands-On & Cadaver Workshop II - Jan 25, 2009Ridge Augmentation Techniques for Dental Implants:Cortical block bone grafts and rhBMP-2

Speaker: Craig M. Misch, DDS, MDS

The choice of material and technique for bone augmentation isdependent on a number of factors including ridge morphology, degree of atrophy, bone volume requirements and clinicianexperience and preference. Successful bone regeneration maybe obtained with autogenous block bone grafting, guided boneregeneration, titanium mesh with bone graft, distractionosteogenesis, as well as more recently with recombinant humanbone morphogenetic protein (rhBMP-2).

Upon completion of this course participants will be able to:

• Identify cases applicable for cortical bone grafts and the titanium mesh technique

• Understand clinical techniques for harvesting autogenous bone and using block bone grafts

• Understand clinical techniques for using titanium mesh with graft materials andrh-BMP-2 with absorbable collagen
