IntroductionIntroduction
For those who are less familiar with the project:
Passive plane (12)
Active plane (12)
Muon chamberoptical line(8 lines)
Link line
MAB (36 pieces)
Z bar
Diagonal connection
- Rigid structures (MABs, z-bars)- Video-camera boxes (on the MABs)- LED holders (called forks, on the chambers)- Diagonal and Z LED holders
(on the MABs and z-bars)- Board computers (one for each MAB)
Elements of the system:

Rigid structures (MAB, Z-bar)Rigid structures (MAB, Z-bar)
The manufacturer is the IMMG consortium in collaboration with HELCO (Greece).
After the test of the first MAB (prototype) 6 units are to be produced by September 2003 and the rest by March 2004.
MAB:
The tender procedure for the production of the MABs is finished.
Z-bar:
The design started (H. Gerwig). It is much-much simpler than the MABs.

Lens-part:
Lenses are ordered:Chamber and z: f=30mm, diam.=10mm, 600 piecesDiagonal: f=70mm, diam.=12mm, 150 pieces.Total cost: ~22 kCHF.
Mechanics (holder) for both:
Design to be finalized together with Hubert. Working…. Fabrication is organized (HEPHY, Vienna).

Fork production:
Finished (already last year).
Fork calibration (8 Apr 2003):
200 (out of 1050) are calibrated.
(See separate talk about the details)
Fork delivery schedule:
- 120 forks are already at CERN- Next 80 by 15 May 2003- Next 300 by 15 September 2003- Last 450 by 15 March 2004
Other LED holders (diagonal, z): under design (H. Gerwig).

Fork installation and chamber calibrationFork installation and chamber calibration
The chamber calibration bench is operational and performs well.
About the details of the first experience see separate talk.

The test to be provided:
The proton fluence comparable with theexpected neutron fluence for E >100keVshould be reached. Proton energy: 60 – 200 MeV.
(F. Faccio, M. Huhtinen, 1999)
Expected fluence during 10 LHC years:At the worst region for the muon barrelNeutrons total: ~3x1010 n/cm2
Neutrons > 100 keV: ~6x109 n/cm2

The main messageThe main message
The last worrying unknowns in the project are answered and all of them in a positive way:
1) The board computers work in LHC environment
2) The calibration technology designed for ISR works
3) The MABs can be built without blowing up our budget.
