General Instructions for Creating CD Labels

Schools are responsible for creating their own CD labels. In order to do so, all schools should have at least one of thefollowing graphics applications: Photoshop (Preferred), Illustrator, InDesign, or PageMaker. A CD Label Template

for each one of these applications has been provided for you in the Memory Builder>Builder Resources>CD LabelResources folder. If you do not have any of the above applications, the instructions found on this page will besufficient to help you create a CD label.

    CD Label Specifications:

CDlabels have an outside diameter of 118 mm and an inside ringdiameter of 41 mm. However, there is always a possibility thatgraphics will continue to the 20 mm inside ring of the CD itself.

    Resolution:

Resolution for printing should be at least 300 dpi. All labels should use the CMYK color format.

    Color:

The printing process requires the CMYK color mode. If you are going to order generic labels please provide us your color

choice from the Color Picker included in the CD Label Resourcesfolder and indicate the exact color name you want.

    Bleeds:

Because the printing process is not always exact and you want toavoid white edges showing up on your CD label, we require that youextend your graphics beyond the outside diameter and into the inside ring diameter.

These extended areas are called Bleeds. It is required that your graphics extend to an outside diameter of 122 mm and at least to 18 mm on the inside

ring diameter. Do notplace any text or essential imagery inside of the 41 mm ring since it is possible that these

areas will get cut off. (See example above.)

    Text:

Make sure you spell check all text thoroughly. No text should be smaller than 6 points. Text can get ugly when our printer doesnt have the font you put in the original file. (This is where we get the

most problems.) To avoid any font issues, we recommend that you eitherRasterize your font, orConvert toOutlines.

Once text has been rasterized or converted to outlines, it becomes, in essence, a graphic and will be renderedhow you intended it.

    Submitting CD Label Files:

Send the original files either in .psd, .eps, .ai, .indd, or .pmd format. (Do not send jpegs. They automaticallyflatten the files.)

Do not flatten or merge the layers of your CD label file. Files must be sent on either a CD or a Zip Disk.

Important: All CD label or packaging artwork must be submitted to Yearbook Interactive for replication 90days before Final Delivery date (and 60 days before the Project Submission date) to ensure on-time delivery.

    Generic Labels:

If you choose not to submit artwork or your artwork is not received at least 90 days prior to your Final Delivery date, a

default generic CD label will be created for you. (For an example, see SampleGenericLabel.pdfin the CD LabelResources folder.) This label will include one school color, the school name, a mascot name, and the year. Use the .pdffile Generic Label Color Palette.pdfto pick your color and then send an email to your Rep. with your color request, school name, mascot name and year. (Please ensure correct spelling.)
