Generic Tegretol (Zeptol Tablets) is used for treating certain types of epileptic seizures and treats severe pain of the jaw or cheek caused by a facial nerve problem (trigeminal neuralgia).

Increase at weeklyintervals by adding up to 200 mg/day using a twice aday regimen until the optimal response is obtained.Dosage generally should not exceed 1000 mg dailyin children 12-15 years of age, and 1200 mg daily inpatients above 15 years of age.Maintenance: Adjust dosage to the minimumeffective level, usually 800-1200 mg daily. Increase weekly toachieve optimal clinical response administered thrice aday or four times a day.Maintenance:Ordinarily, optimal clinical response isachieved at daily doses below 35 mg/kg.Combination Therapy:Tegretol may be used alone or with otheranticonvulsants. When added to existing anticonvulsanttherapy, the drug should be added gradually while theother anticonvulsants are maintained or graduallydecreased, except phenytoin, which may have to beincreased. This daily dose may beincreased by up to 200 mg/day using increments of100 mg every 12 hours, only as needed to achievefreedom from pain. Do not exceed 1200 mg daily.Maintenance: Control of pain can be maintained inmost patients with 400-800 mg daily. Generic Tegretol TabletsWarnings And PrecautionsHaematological effects: Agranulocytosis and aplasticanaemia have been associated with Tegretol; however,due to the very low incidence of these conditions,meaningful risk estimates for Tegretol are difficult toobtain. .Serious dermatologic reactions: Serious dermatologicreactions, including toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN; alsoknown as Lyells syndrome) and Stevens-Johnsonsyndrome (SJS), have been reported very rarely withTegretol.Seizures: Tegretol should be used with caution inpatients with mixed seizures which includes absences,either typical or atypical. Generic Tegretol TabletsWarnings And PrecautionsOther dermatologic reactions: Mild skin reactions, e.g.isolated macular or maculopapular exanthema, can alsooccur and are mostly transient and not hazardous. Theyusually disappear within a few days or weeks, eitherduring the continued course of treatment or following adecrease in dosage.Renal function: Baseline and periodic completeurinalysis and BUN determinations are recommended.Anticholinergic effects: Tegretol has shown mildanticholinergic activity. EEG may show dysrhythmias.Combined Poisoning: When alcohol, tricyclicantidepressants, barbiturates, or hydantoins aretaken at the same time, the signs andsymptoms of acute poisoning with Tegretol maybe aggravated or modified.
