André Le Roux started his dog career in 1992 in the military. After the military
he worked as a Mine Detection dog handler in various African countries and
Bosnia Herzegovina. He was the co-founder of the Mine Dog Centre South Africa
which later became the mine dog school in conjunction with Mine Tech
International and he is still the owner of the dog school property. Part of his joint
managing director duties were to oversee the training of dogs, new handlers, and
personally deploying and accrediting dogs and handlers in over 14 countries on 5
continents. He also served as part of the advisory group for the Geneva
International Centre for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD). In this time Andre was
part of compiling a puppy socializing program for demining
dogs.http://www.gichd.org/fileadmin/pdf/publications/MDD/MDD_ch2_part1.pdf
To further his knowledge in detection dogs, he worked in Afghanistan as a
Mission Dog Handler attached to the Canadian military to clear roads and patrol
routes for Improvised Explosive Devises (IED’s) (Resume available on request)
Thys Kleyn heads up the patrol and aggression training. He has a huge amount
of K-9 experience in South Africa and abroad. He served 9 years in the SAPS as
K9 instructor (during this time he finished his LLb degree at the University of
Pretoria and is currently on the non-practicing roll of lawyers of South Africa)
and 12 years in countries like Tanzania, Iraq and Afghanistan as handler, trainer
and Project Manager. In Iraq he was part of the personal protection teams for
Prime Minister Maliki and President Alawi. He was also responsible for
establishing a canine unit at the Sulamania International Airport in Kurdistan.
In Afghanistan he assisted the Coalition forces as Combat dog Handler for four
years. During this time he was deployed with the ground troops for four years
handling a dog searching and defeating Road Side bombs and Improvised
Explosive Devices. Thys was also a trainer, Project Manager and quality control
manager for canine programs in Afghanistan for another three years. During this
time he trained the VIP dog unit for President Karzai and the Border Police.
Dog school
The dogs are trained at our facility just outside Pretoria. The environment suits
us well in preparing the dogs for any area in Africa with the kennels situated in
the Seringveld Conservation area. The kennel facility is close to the world
renowned Onderstepoort medical facility and also within an hour’s drive from
Oliver Tambo International Airport. Once fully trained and certified the dogs are
housed on the sites where they are deployed. Proficiency training and further
training takes place on site. This ensures the dog and dog handler’s knowledge of
their areas of responsibilities enabling them to detect anything out of the
ordinary. Training on site also spreads the word about the dog’s abilities through
day workers / contractors witnessing the training increasing the crime deterrence
effect of the K-9 teams. Validations by a third party will take place on site as well
at least once a year so as to ensure that standards of the K-9 unit are
maintained. Through our partnership with numerous security companies in
Pretoria we have many teams deployed at residential and commercial properties
and we use these premises also as socialization sites for the young dogs.
All teams comply with the minimum standards set by PSIRA and SASSETA. In
addition to this all teams will also comply with the US Army regulation 190-12
standard which is used internationally ensuring teams of the highest caliber and
professionalism beyond reproach. De-mining/ UXO dog teams comply with the
International Mine Action Standards (IMAS).
