Your Genesis BowThe Genesis bow you purchased is different from other bows because it accommodates alldraw lengths from 15” to 30”. This means that people of all sizes can shoot the same bowwithout adjustment. Made especially for the beginning archer, the Genesis bow takes littleeffort to draw and is very easy to shoot.

The Genesis riser is made from solid, lightweight, machined aluminum, and the limbs areformed from a high-strength, fiber-reinforced composite. It is a single-cam bow and is fittedwith a high-tech bowstring and durable molded grip.

RiserThe riser (handle section) on your Genesisbow is machined from 6061-T6 aluminum. This material is engineered to provide theGenesis bow with optimal balance whilebeing both extremely durable and very lightweight.

Idler WheelThe idler wheel is located on the upper limbof the bow. The main function of the idlerwheel is to transfer stored energy from thebow limbs back through the string to thearrow in a smooth and rapid fashion. Thebearings in the idler wheel are made of avery low-friction synthetic material whichseldom requires lubrication.

Limbs and Limb Bolts The limbs on your Genesis bow areattached to each end of the riser. They storethe potential energy you put into the bowuntil the string is released. At the momentof release, the stored potential energy istransformed into energy in motion, and thearrow is propelled toward the target. The limb bolts attach the limbs to the riserand are also used to adjust the draw weightof your bow. Using a 3/16” hex wrench, thelimb bolts can be turned in a counterclock-wise direction to decrease the poundage ofthe bow to a minimum of 10 lbs. Turning thelimb bolts clockwise will return the bow to itsmaximum of 20 lbs. One full turn equalsapproximately 1.4 lbs. of draw weight. The limb bolts on each limb should alwaysbe turned the same number of turns whenadjusting bow poundage.

Genesis SoloCam SystemYour Genesis bow features single-camdesign. The elliptical-shaped cam allows thebow to maintain the set poundage through-out the draw cycle. The extended solid armon the cam cradles and guides the bow-string. When the bowstring is released, thearm creates a flywheel effect, which resultsin a faster arrow while minimizing bow recoil.

GripThe durable, molded grip on your Genesisbow is specially designed to fit the contours of your hand, providing both comfort and consistency.

Arrow RestYour Genesis bow comes with a flipper-style arrow rest (made by New ArcheryProducts). The arrow rest is located justabove the shelf portion of the riser. Our test-ing has shown that this rest is very durableand provides excellent shooting characteris-tics. Note: If the flipper arm bends afterrepeated shots, simply bend the arm backto the original horizontal position.

BowstringWe equip each Genesis bow with a high-strength, durable bowstring made fromstate-of-the-art materials. This bowstringprovides superior performance, ensuringthat the maximum amount of the bow’sstored energy is transferred to the arrow.

Power Cable and Cable GuardThe power cable is the second componentof the bowstring assembly. It is anchored atthe axle on the upper limb and wrapsaround the take-up track on the cam whichis mounted on the lower limb.

The cable guard is the metal rod which sup-ports the sliding cable cage that keeps thecable slightly off to one side and out of theflight path of the arrow.

Nocking PointYour bow is marked with a white stringnock. Your arrow should be “nocked” (posi-tioned on the string) just below this mark.

WARNING! Make certain that arrows usedare of proper length and stiffness for yourbow’s draw weight and draw length (see and follow your arrow manufacturer’srecommendations).

ArrowsArrows are commonly made from one ormore of the following materials: wood, aluminum, fiberglass or graphite composites.Aluminum, fiberglass and graphite arrowsare the most popular because they can bemade stronger and more consistent than thenatural wood arrows.

Arrows are composed of four basic parts: ashaft, a head (also called a point), fletchings(feathers or vanes), and a nock. The shaft isthe main part of the arrow, and all the othercomponents are attached to it. The head isthe heavy end of the arrow that is usuallypointed, allowing the arrow to easily stick intothe target. The fletchings, or vanes, are locat-ed toward the rear of the arrow and help toguide the arrow to the target. The fletchings,or vanes, are commonly mounted to thearrow shaft in a helical (slight spiral) fashionto make the arrow spin while in flight (muchlike a bullet). This stabilizes the arrow in flightso it flies straight. The nock, attached to thevery rear of the arrow, keeps the arrow incontact with the bowstring during the shoot-ing process. This ensures that the arrowreceives the maximum amount of the bow’sstored energy and that each arrow launch is consistent.

WARNING! Make certain that arrows usedare of proper length and stiffness for yourbow’s draw weight and draw length (see and follow your arrow manufacturer’s recommendations).

WARNING! Defective arrows are notsafe to shoot. Check your arrows fordefects before shooting. Some defects towatch for are: bends, dents or cracks inthe shaft; loose points; damaged vanes;and cracked, bent or broken nocks.

Arrows come in many different sizes. Thearrows generally shot from the Genesisbow are aluminum with the 1820 designa-tion and are 30" or 31" long. These arrowsare capable of being shot by virtually any-one with the Genesis bow and they arevery durable. For other arrows suitable for a particular Genesis shooter, check with yourlocal retailer.

SightsBow sights come in a variety of configurations and styles. The most popularones use light-gathering fiber optic pins.Adding a bow sight to your Genesis bowcan improve your shooting accuracy almostinstantly. However, it is important to notethat when a sight is added to the bow, itlessens the bow’s versatility from shooter toshooter if the bow is shared by a family orgroup. Many factors affect proper sightplacement: the way an individual grips thestring, the distance from your anchor pointto your eye, and even the way a personlines up the sight with the target – all affectthe arrow’s impact point.

The majority of today’s archers utilize a bowsight on their own individual bow, but for thebeginning archer, it is not absolutely necessary. There are shooters who do notuse bow sights, and instead, choose toshoot “instinctively.” Instinctive shooting issimply concentrating on the spot that youwant to hit while instinctively judging whereto aim the arrow.

A third style of shooting is called “BareBow.” It consists of several different methods, one being the “gap system.” In this system, the archer sights the targetwhile making a mental picture of the tip ofthe arrow in relation to the target (called“the gap”), just prior to release of the arrow.Another method is to sight down the lengthof the arrow with the aiming eye; this isreferred to as “shotgunning.”

With practice, “bare bow” or“instinctive shoot-ing” (shooting with-out a bow sight),can be very effec-tive and rewarding.

Arrow RestsYour Genesis bow comes equipped with aNew Archery Products flipper rest. Otherrests are available that are adjustable and have various other features. Theserests should adapt easily to your Genesisbow and are available at your local proshop.Your Genesis Pro does not come equippedwith a rest to allow for rests with greatercentershot adjustment.

StabilizersStabilizers come in many shapes and sizesand are made from a variety of materials. The function of the stabilizer is to balancethe bow in your hand, which helps toimprove accuracy.

TargetsTargets are made of many different materialsand come in many different shapes and sizes.Targets made from bales of straw or old cardboard boxes have been popular for years.Recently, archery targets have become moresophisticated. A number of traditional targetshapes are available in foam. More recently, foam has been used to make targets that areshaped like deer or other animals and arecalled 3-dimensional targets. These 3-dimensional targets are often used byarchers to prepare them for a hunt.

Miscellaneous AccessoriesAs you progress in the sport of archery, youwill discover that there is a lot of equipmenton the market that has been specificallydesigned to help the archer obtain betteraccuracy or more comfort while shooting. Here are a few items that may help youenjoy archery a bit more.

• Padded leather finger stalls orfinger tab. These devices afford thefinger shooter protection while providinga smooth, consistent release of thebowstring.

Finger shooterusing finger protection.

• Mechanical shooting release aid. These are hand-held devices that attachto the bowstring and are used to pull andrelease the bowstring in place of usingone’s fingers directly on the string. Themechanical release aid reduces the strainon the drawing fingers and increases theconsistency of the bowstring release, which usually results in increasedaccuracy.

Mechanical releaseaids are easy touse and extremelyconsistent if usedin accordance withtheir manufacturersinstructions andrequirements.

• Quivers. Quivers are devices that holdyour arrows safely and securely and keepthem close at hand. These can be wornby the shooter or can be attached directlyto the bow.

Quivers eitherattach to the bowor can be worn bythe shooter.

• Arm guards. These devices are wornon the shooter’s “bow” arm. They protectthe shooter from the bowstring should itcontact the arm during a lapse in propershooting form.

Arm guards protectthe bow arm froman occasional slapof the bowstring.

Practice Makes PerfectAs with any sport, to become really good atsomething, you must practice. The moreoften you practice, the better you willbecome. The better you become, the morefun you will have. And with practice, you willsoon be hitting the center of the target withconsistency, making your archery experience as rewarding as it is fun.

Factors That AffectShooting AccuracyWhen shooting an arrow, there are a num-ber of factors that you, as a beginningarcher, must think about if you’re going toget that arrow into the bull’s-eye: Range,Gravity, Arrow Velocity and Trajectory.

RangeRange is the distance from your bow to thetarget, and it is often measured in yards. You’ll typically shoot at 10 or 20 yards, butmay shoot longer distances as you becomemore proficient. Accurate arrow placementrequires accurate knowledge of “Range,”the distance to the target.

13

51515 GenesisOwners 5/8/06 5:27 PM Page 15

Page 16: Genesis Owners Manual

GravityGravity is an invisible force that pulls every-thing toward the Earth (including arrows). To get your arrow to the center of the targetbefore gravity pulls it to the ground, youmust launch your arrow slightly above yourstraight line of sight. The arrow’s trajectory(path to the target) will be in the form of anarc. The distance to the target and thespeed of the arrow determine the launchangle and the height of the arrow’s arc.

TrajectoryTrajectory is the path the arrow takes to thetarget. When you look at a target, your lineof sight to the target is a straight line. However, when you shoot an arrow, thepath your arrow takes to get to the target isa curved path or arc. Having a feel for, orknowing the trajectory (arched path) thatyour arrow will take, increases your ability tohit targets at varying ranges.

Trajectory is the actual path of the arrow.

Arrow VelocityArrow Velocity is the speed at which thearrow leaves the bowstring. Arrow velocity ismost often expressed in units of “feet-per-second.” The arrow velocity is the main fac-tor in determining the arrow’s trajectory. Ifwe also know the arrow’s weight, we candetermine its kinetic energy or ability topenetrate a target. With the Genesis bow,the same arrow may be shot at differentarrow velocities, depending on the drawlength of the archer shooting the bow.Short draw lengths will result in lower arrow

velocities and higher arched trajectories, while longer draw lengths result in higher ini-tial velocities and flatter trajectories.A slower arrow will have a higher trajectory.A faster arrow will have a flatter trajectory.

A slower arrow will have more arc. A faster arrow will shoot flatter.

It All Comes TogetherWhen range and arrow trajectory arecalculated correctly, your arrow will arrive atthe center of the target! And to hit the center of the target, your bow must be ingood working condition. In the followingpages we will discuss the basicsand the importanceof proper equipment care.

Where To ShootWhere do you go to shoot your bow?Archery pro shops often have indoor rangeswhere you can shoot. For a small fee, you’reoften allowed to shoot from a few hours toas much as an entire day. Finding a localarchery club that sponsors an outdoorarchery range would also be a goodresource. Chances are good that there mayeven be a public shooting area or outdoorrange near you.

Care For Your BowTo keep your bowshooting straightand in good work-ing order, there area few things youneed to know.

Inspect Your Bow• Inspect your bow before each shooting

session! Worn or damaged parts couldbe dangerous.

• Check for anyloose parts onsights, stabiliz-ers, quivers, etc.and tightenbefore shooting.

• When inspecting, pay specialattention to the bowstring and cables. Ifthe bowstring is frayed or has brokenstrands, replace it immediately. If any ofthe protective servings are loose or havecome undone, either have the string orcable re-served, or have it replaced priorto shooting.

WARNING! Do NOT expose the bow-string or cables to sharp edges or extremeheat sources of any kind.

• Check the bow limbs, cam, and idlerwheel for damage or wear. If one ofthese items appears damaged in anyway or is not working correctly, DO NOTSHOOT your bow. Take your bow to aqualified local pro shop to have it lookedat by a trained professional.

Lubricate Your Bow & Bowstrings• Oil the axles of the cam and idler wheel

every now and then with a drop oflightweight oil to keep them functioningsmoothly. The bearings on the Genesisbow are self-lubricating, so the oil is onlya precaution that coats the high-strengthaxles to prevent oxidation.

• Lubricate your bowstring with beeswaxor a commercial bowstring wax, whichcan be purchased at any archery proshop. The wax keeps the individualstrands lubricated and helps to reducefriction and wear, which prolongs the lifeof your string.

Bowstring waxkeeps bowstringslubricated, reducesfriction and pro-longs string life.

• Check the arrow rest to make sure it is ingood working order. If worn, replace thearrow rest. When replacing the rest, ensure that the flipper arm (whichsupports the arrow) is located below the(black) side pressure point of the restand pivots freely in the direction ofarrow travel.

If flipper armbecomes bent out of its originalshape, it can easily be returnedto its normal shapewith needle-nose pliers.

Storage of Your Bow• Store your bow properly when not in use.

Keep it stored in a bow case that isspecifically designed for your bow, orhang your bow by the riser in ahorizontal position.

Always place your bow on a bow rack manufactured specifically to temporarilystore your bow.
