It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas as the holiday elves have been very busy creating a magical experience in Ge-neva for its 46th Christmas Walk on December 6 and House Tour festivities December 6 and 7. Among the twinkling lights and fresh greenery lined streets, chestnuts will roast over open fires, carolers will fill the night air with seasonal favor-ites and a live nativity scene will take place. Dazzling window displays brimming with gift ideas invite shoppers to stroll through shops as merchants serve holiday refreshments.

This popular and family friendly event will treat visitors to a very merry Friday evening full of hometown traditions as well as special treats —the arrival of Santa Lucia, Christmas cook-ies, the Great Tree lighting, homemade candy canes, and… a visit from Santa with the opening of his Gingerbread House.

Treat yourself to the Christmas House Tour on Friday and Saturday. Five charming homes, aglow with holiday decora-

tions, will open their doors to visitors for self-guided tours. The personality of each home will illuminate when local deco-rators and landscapers work with homeowners to create holi-day magic. A Holiday Tea held at the Congregational Church in Geneva is included in the $30 price of the ticket.

Both events are presented by the Geneva Chamber of Com-merce with the support of the City of Geneva and commu-nity volunteers. Proceeds from the house tour go to decorat-ing the downtown for the holidays. Let us show you our warmth and hospitality as a visit to Geneva becomes part of your holiday celebration.

For information on these events and events all through the holiday season, visit www.genevachamber.com or call 630-232-6060.

Most Wonderful Time of the YearPlan to enjoy the fresh and fragrant Christmas trees and

wreaths, twinkling lights, and the magic of Friday evening. Geneva Mayor Kevin Burns and Scott Lebin, chairman of Ge-neva Chamber of Commerce, will welcome the crowd assem-bled to ring in the holiday season. A multitude of voices will sing favorite carols in front of the Courthouse as Santa Lucia, the Swedish symbol of the season, arrives with her attendants.

The attendants will circulate through the gathering bidding all welcome and offering a traditional Swedish “wish” cookie, Swedish Pepparkakor. An old custom says place a Pepparkakor in the palm of the hand, make a wish and then tap the cookie in the middle with your index finger. If the cookie breaks into three pieces, your wish will come true. If the Pepparkakor breaks into many pieces you’ll have lots of tasty morsels to enjoy.

Caroling, CarolingStarting Friday evening, The Merry Carolers will put all in

the holiday spirit with their caroling on the stage and around downtown. After the lighting of the Great Tree, 4th-8th grad-ers from St. Patrick Catholic School Choir will be in front of Galena Wine Cellars. Kindergartners from Kensington School of Geneva will also be adding to the spirit with their voices on Find strolling carolers all weekend in downtown Geneva.

Friday night. On Saturday, St. Peters Local Vocals and Geneva Girl Scout Troops (11:30) on Courthouse Lawn will entertain. Saturday enjoy the music of a group of young adults from over 10 churches known as the Old Towne Carolers, from 1:30 – 3:30. Twelve Geneva High School students comprise the instrumental group Plain White V’s who will be playing holiday music around the Third & State area late afternoon on Saturday.

Must be Santa, Santa ClausThe young and young at heart should gaze into the night sky,

ho, ho, hoping to catch a glimpse of the jolly old elf arriving in Geneva. Encouraged by the crowd singing, he will make his debut just after 6 pm. Mayor Burns and Santa Claus will then prepare everyone for the long awaited grand event, the lighting of the Great Tree on the Courthouse lawn sponsored by Sho-deen Group. Genevans and visitors help by counting down to the suspenseful moment, the switch is thrown and over 4,000 lights suddenly illuminate the upturned faces of the on-look-ers. Shimmering handmade ornaments created by the children of Geneva signal that the town is all a twinkle and ready for the holidays. Santa opens up his Gingerbread House at the corner of James and South Third streets to hear the wishes of area children until 9:30 p.m. Friday. Santa’s Gingerbread House is sponsored by Geneva Bank & Trust.

Warm hues of original floor boards accentuate the comfortable furnishings in the open living room. Jovial merry-makers gather around the turn-of-the-century fireplace celebrating holiday camaraderie. Snow is lightly falling outside the antique in-swing casement windows. Gently divided from the living room, yet still feeling as if they are one, the dining area adds to the spacious

openness in the home; half walls were recently uncovered by the Patterson family. Much remodeling by these fourth owners themselves has brought the home back to its initial splendor. A lovely sterling silver tea set, inherited from a beloved grandmother, is the centerpiece for a hutch, en-joyed by the Wilsons almost 100 years ago. What once was a closet is now a convenient wine nook.

Introducing

AppleSantaBy Peggy Boehm

Dressed for the holidays, the family room is bathed in filtered sun-light from the banks of windows that overlook a wondrous backyard. This room was added 40 years ago. The floor above it was added just last year and designed by local architect Tim Nelson. Floor to ceiling custom bookcases surround the fireplace. Both of these architectural elements were constructed by the family. The molding around the door and window frames was given special attention so as to match effortlessly with existing woodwork during the remodel.

Efficient use of space in the busy galley kitchen leaves plenty of room for cooks preparing last minute details for a gathering of friends. The white, maple cabinets are perfect for displaying a wonderful col-lection of items from a grandparent’s 1950s grocery store. Children kneel on the banquette seats around the family heirloom kitchen table, hoping to catch a glimpse of nine little reindeer outside.

Upstairs, each child’s room is themed to match his or her personality, including chandeliers purchased from favorite local shops. Grandpa has built a bookcase for every bedroom to hold cherished stories. The bathroom tiles are designed to reflect what the bathroom may have been like in 1917, including restoration of the claw foot tub.

Down the hall, the added master bedroom has several features to admire. The built-in clothes and jewelry dresser was crafted by the homeowner. Double doors lead to a Juliet balcony. A cozy fireplace and exquisite master bath, with heated floors, make the space a wel-come retreat. Skylights in the vaulted ceilings are the finishing touches on this comfortable cocoa colored room.

Descending the back stairwell, catch a glimpse of an inventive chalk-board made from an antique window found at the owner’s childhood farm home. As you exit, delight in an enchanting Christmas themed outdoor deck and gazebo.

VINCE AMORE

As you stroll up the circular drive to this notable home, you can imagine horse-drawn carriages pulling through the wrought iron gates dropping off family and friends on this 2.7 acre lot. Built in 1868 by John Bowman Atwater, a well-known actor/inventor and namesake for a Geneva restaurant, this Victorian features a three-story octagonal wing, ornate Italianate woodwork around the eaves and a large wraparound porch complete with a gazebo.

Entering through the original double doors of this cedar and Fox River stone, you will think you have stepped back in time. Much of the home has been preserved as it was in the nineteenth century. For over one hundred years, little ones have scurried down the paneled staircase hoping to find a special gift left by Santa. Beautiful clear leaded glass windows have stood the test of time. Even the walls have the appearance that the damask flowered wallpaper was put up more recently than the 1860s.

Light, in the hall, bath and bedrooms and throughout the first floor is emitted by fixtures placed by previous owners. CIRCA’s expertise and vintage decorating style is ideally suited for this home.

A bright guest room contains a secret door that was used to call the hired help, living above the garage. A bedroom, turned closet, is a shortcut into the master, where on a blustery winter day you can envision families keeping warm by the fireplace and later with radiator heat; which the family still uses today. Enjoy a quick peek into the office; look for the sink from yesteryear nestled in a niche. Some of the master bath has been recently restored. However, much of what you see is from when the room was added in the 1950s, like the built-in cabinets, which still look pristine.

The octagonal wing and arrangement of space result in captivatingly shaped rooms and a wealth of visual interest. No wonder, in 1949 a rendering of a gathering inside the home graced the cover of the Saturday Evening Post magazine.

Early 1870s, could find Atwater, with his extensive theater background, holding performances in the parlor. Great care has been taken to meld modern day with days gone by in the lower level. Harmonious colors of beige, cream and gold greet visitors from near and far to delight in the holiday season. On library shelves, antique transportation vehicles are interspersed with an assortment of much loved reads. A long-standing

A swinging door leads to the kitchen; take a moment to glimpse into the butler pantry. Beaded board ceiling and a turn of the century buffet gives a hint of what this area was years ago. in the leaded windows. The 70s gourmet kitchen still contains the brick stove used by the Atwater’s.

Built in 1959, this lovely brick ranch first intrigued the second owners, who purchased it five years ago, because of the renovation possibili-ties they saw in the house. This home is an example of a mid-century modern style popular after WWII. Having done much of the work themselves, the home has retained the original layout while adding an urban vibe.

Our decorator’s theme, “In the meadow…you can build a snowman”, blends effortlessly with the nature inspired style of the owners. Outside trimming complements the lush natural setting.

Beginning in the foyer, warm hues with names like Buttered Yam and Houdini invite you to explore this open, comfort-able home. A crackling fire warms merrymakers in the retro living room. Surrounding intricate tile was put up by the homeowner’s hand. Several pieces on the glass shelves were purchased at the Geneva Arts Fair.

Furnishings, many bought locally, meld perfectly from room to room. Walking past the den, take notice of the unique desk. To your left, distinctive chandeliers highlight a festive table set for Christmas dinner. Anastazia used organic colors to accompany the woodsy theme. Expansive windows, in the cozy family room, give view to a secluded winter backyard. A “wine tree” is evidence of good times celebrated in this home. Original homeowner used the back barn for his hobby of building airplanes.

Cherry cabinets with walnut stain surround the welcoming kitchen. Natural walnut floors guide you, as sunlight sneaks in through the kitchen cut-out. The functionality of the kitchen was given great consideration when walls and doors were moved; as the Rambos enjoy entertaining and spending time in this room. Laughter and the aroma of freshly-baked tasty treats mingle with the festivities and good cheer in the home.

When remodeling was started, a letter dating back to Christmas 1959 was found. In it, previous homeowners wrote how thrilled they were to build this new home and spend their first holiday here. As you wander down the path aglow with glittering lights, gaze upon the majestic maple in the midst of the yard and know that the homeowners are very excited to have shared their home with you this holiday season.

Spectacular light and views grace this beautiful custom home, built by George Havlicek in 1999. The cedar and Wisconsin blue stone English Cape Cod lies on the greens of Mill Creek Golf Course. Buttress pillars greet you onto the gaily decorated front porch.

Little Traveler was inspired by the homeowner’s colors and furnishings and has chosen a welcoming winter retreat theme. After a peek into the masculine designed office, take notice of the painting titled “Simeon’s Moment” lovingly hung in the hallway; a special piece for the family, es-pecially during the holidays. Meandering down the hall your attention is drawn to the soft lighting from the tray ceiling and the tasteful decorating of pinks and greens in the master bedroom and bath.

As you walk past a British Bombay chest, note the English countryside painting from British artist, David Smith. His work can also be found above the stone fireplace in the vaulted great room. Winter sun shines through the skylights showcasing stockings hung by the chimney with care.

A lovingly decorated kitchen displays a balance of function, beauty and style. It is spacious enough for holiday baking, including a lower baking counter found in the island. Giallo Veneziano granite blends seamlessly with the Italian porcelain counter tops and back splash. Spices and sprinkles for cookies can be found in the Wood-Mode maple cabinets. Outside, a unique kinetic wind sculpture spins in the winter breeze.

Melodious tunes can often be heard from the affectionately named “grandma clock” at the top of the stairs. The importance of family is displayed fondly with cherished photos gracing the walls. Hand crafted newel posts complement the iron spindles that lead you to the lower level. Children gather around the floor- to-coffered-ceiling brick fireplace, in anticipation of a visitor coming down the chimney. A German influence is evident in much of the downstairs. A great deal of the wall art was pur-chased on family vacations abroad. A German stein collection, brought home when a family member was stationed overseas in the army, finds an

appropriate spot by the bar. Spacious windows give view to a magnificent tree and bubbling pond decorated for the season.

Back upstairs, original Thomas Kinkade paintings surround a strikingly-set table in the dining room. As you head out to continue your travels, take pause of this special Mill Creek home that the family feels blessed to have, and share with family and friends.

Settled amid towering trees, this 1912 Historic National Register home was built by well-known local artisan Oscar Wilson for his family of eight. The current family, third owners, carried out extensive renovations in 2007 to return the Arts and Crafts bungalow to its original grandeur – always asking “What would Oscar have done?”

Wilson’s construction was heavily influenced by Frank Lloyd Wright, evident in the Prairie style interior and stucco, siding and brick exterior of this residence. Wide eaves, long and narrow windows and ornate interior wood trim, com-mon to Wilson homes, further show the influence of Wright. Luminaries guide you to the unique sleeping porch.

Wonderful memories are tucked into every corner of this historic house. The style of interior designer Bobbi Alderfer can be recognized in many rooms. Artwork and rugs reflect the family living abroad and their travels to SE Asia and

China inspiring The Mossy Twig’s decorating theme. Quarter sawn oak cabinetry is unmistakable throughout the home. Grouped windows al-low for natural light to warm the beamed ceiling living room. Recessed glass-door shelving, also used in the dining room, houses favorite literary collections – perhaps read on one of the original window seats covered in Jim Thompson fabric. Easily imagine the Wilson family gathered around the fireplace reading “Twas’ the Night Before Christmas” to their six children all those years past.

Stepping into an inviting dining room transports you to an earlier time when gatherings revolved around the family. A 1912 chandelier lightly glows above a custom made, from Chinese window panels, dining room table. More Jim Thompson fabric, purchased in Singapore, is found on the seats. Carefully blended recent additions, like the kitchen, have up-dated the house while maintaining its historic quality. Hexagonal Carrara tile replaced 60s ceramic tile and a wood floor was added and stained to match the rest of the home. The original hand built butler’s pantry has been restored and repainted. The Ciara yellow hue is carried seamlessly from the casual dining area to the “canary room”, still known today by this moniker; named over 100 years ago when Wilson kept his colorful birds there. Now open, the two rooms were first separated by a wall. The “canary room” was expanded, after the home was built, to accommodate a back door and powder room.

The detached garage was built by Wilson in 1916. It was moved to its current location via a crane. During the move, a note was found stating the garage was “Built by Oscar Wilson for his flivver”, referring to his Model-T. The chicken coop was also moved to allow for development of the extra lot.

In 2008 the City of Geneva awarded the family a Historic Preservation Award for residential rehab and in 2010 they received the Preservation Partners of the Fox Valley Star Award.

Enjoy the festive colors outside as the scent of fresh greenery beckons you out to appreciate the crisp winter day.
