CHAPTER 1 PREPARING TO BE AN
ENGINEER Lecture 1
Date: 17/02/2014
The Difference
10 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
High School College/University
Among the brightest students Everyone is bright
May be in top 3 May be in the bottom 50%
Parents used to monitor You have to monitor
Less distractions More distractions
Motivation
11 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Why are you studying engineering:
My parents wants me to, they will pay my tuition……...
Engineers make more money……………….
I am a creative person who loves technology………………..
My uncle is engineer, hence…………………..
Your motivation may be similar to some of these……..
I am good in math and science, hence…….
Engineering is hard, I want to test my abilities……………….
I want to solve complex technical problems, hence………
Must Develop Basic Living Skills
12 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
High School
During this period, your family/parents used to provide you with basic
needs such as cleaning of clothes, feeding, travelling, etc.
College/University
YOU SHOULD PROVIDE THESE BASIC SERVICES FOR YOURSELF.
Defeats and Obstacles
13 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
College is tough and engineering is toughest.
Many Challenges such as exams, homework's, projects, Labs,
Grades, etc.
No one to help – No Parents, No Friends (as they will be in the
same situation).
You will develop the skills necessary to face new challenges.
If you take the challenges positively, you will enjoy the college
life like nothing else.
You will be strong and Independent.
Manage Your Time
14 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Working within the schedule is challenging.
In college, most of the materials are presented at a much faster pace.
You will be expected to learn much of the material at your own.
You must change your learning strategy and become more
efficient learner.
How can you accomplish this and survive.
Manage Your Money
15 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
College is expensive i.e. fees, cars, textbooks, etc.
You must budget your money.
Resist the temptation to spend it while you have got it.
Try to save 10-20% of the pocket money. It is a good habit and
will help you during a long run.
Divide the lump into weekly expenses and track expenses.
Get Along With People
16 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
To be a successful, engineers must work together in teams.
In college, study groups, projects teams are some examples.
The socialization skills will help when you go to work in a company.
It is possible that during your job you not only work with engineers
but also with other peoples such as workers, accountants.
It is highly essential for you to get along with all which actually help
you to gain success.
Must Stay Healthy
17 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Eat well balanced food, take your meals at regular time intervals, your
meal should include nutritious food such as vegetables, fruits, etc. Stop
eating snacks anytime, stop oily and fatty food.
Maintain your exercise routine. It will help you towards sleep, stay alert
during those long afternoon classes, you will feel more active and fresh.
Sleep well. It will help you to regain your strength. At least sleep 7-8
hours per day and night sleep is far more relaxing than a day nap.
The Classroom
18 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
The common problem is that the bright high school students, are often
just average in the college population. Some students adjust to this rally,
however some don’t know how to proceed.
Do not apply the high school learning habit to college life. They wont
be enough to achieve success. You should generate new and improved
learning strategies.
Professors expect adult behavior from your side. eg. You should submit
homework on time, should attend exams, etc.
Get to know your professors better. Use the office hours provided to get
more information about the class. You may find their research
interesting and can push you to pursue further higher education such as
masters and PhD.
Study Skills
19 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
How does learning occur?
You must figure out the best way for you to learn………..
Its not the professor, not his teaching, not lecture notes, or classroom
activities…its just you and your brain……..
Spoken words (lectures)
Visually (pictures and written words)
Hands on experience (labs and projects)
Create A Good Environment
20 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Environment greatly affect the speed at which you can learn……
Don’t lie in bed to study…. it will make you sleep……
Be sure room is not too hot…it will make you sleep……
Use a straight backed chair at a desk………..
Be sure there is adequate lighting……..
Students can use library or other quiet places……..
Quiet surrounding is good……..no distractions…they will reduce the
learning speed……
Arrive At Class Prepared
21 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
You wont see your professor much often…..
Best way is to prepare yourself ahead of the class…….
Lecture material is presented only once…..
If you arrive already with the material…..you can see what your
professor is emphasizes, that can be most valuable for exams…
If you couldn’t understand the concepts…you can ask questions..
Take Good Notes
22 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Because you have read the material…it will be easy to take notes..
Review your notes after the class and fill any holes….
Take the best notes you can and try to understand the contents
Only through repetition you can understand and retain the
information……..
Homework's
23 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Homework is your best chance to practice before taking exams…..
When you are stuck…get help…..this doesn’t mean you are
stupid……..everyone need help someway….don't wait until its too
late………..
To do homework, you will review your notes and textbook…through
this process you will gain a more complete understanding……..
Revision
24 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Test time is coming….you are pretty well prepared……
You have read the textbook……you took notes during classes and
reviewed and completed your notes after class….you have worked
problems….and now you are almost ready……
Last and most important step…..revise your material…
It might feel boring…..but it is the most useful step as it will give you
the confidence that you know about the material and well prepared for
the exams….
Master Exams
25 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Some students do well under pressure…..and exams bring out best in
them….but not all students…..
If the stress of an exam makes you lock up, practice exams
beforehand……
Choose several problems from textbook……solve previous
exams…you will become better with practice……
Pay attention is class…..try to find out the important topics…through
homework's try to judge the exam paper….
During exam….read paper carefully…solve the easy problems
first….use the entire time properly……don’t give up until the last
second…..
Time Management
26 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Get organized…..use a day planner to manage your time…..
The planner should include time for….
time to attend classes and labs….
preparation time……
time for personal work….meals…laundry…etc.
time to review notes…read textbook and do homework….
time for Gym….sleep……
Limit distractions…computer games, TV, talkative roommates…
Team Work
27 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Your fellow students are a valuable resource…..
Some will help you towards homework's and notes……
Their questions will often illuminate the holes in your knowledge..
You can arrange practice exams with your fellow students……
User Resources
28 2/16/2014 Eng. Skills & Ethics
Books: Read textbooks carefully…..look through them….they will give
you plenty of knowledge….
Libraries: Knowledge is arranged and sorted….its also quiet and one of
the best places to study….be respectful and use it often….
