OVERVIEW OF RAP MUSICRap music conveys many meanings showing feelings as well as emotions. They tend to show the negative side of someone’s life (usually the rapper themselves) and begin to show their rise to what they have achieved. The way the music comes across is negative as the tone of the music is shown to be angry and the lyrics are seen as threatening. Rappers like Eminem deliver lyrics in a growling tone to show their emotion of how they are feeling about the message they are sending across. A lot of swearing, drugs and violence is brought across in many rap songs

The media doesn't’t represent rap music very well as they pick up on what being said and sometimes put in a different implied meaning to that lyric. The audience is usually aimed at younger people and some people believe the choice of words can be offensive and inappropriate for the target audience.

CHARACTER TYPESMedia presents rappers as inappropriate and in some cases offensive. Their song lyrics can come across in an anger tone which to the media they show it as being offensive rather than trying to send a message. As a stereo type people may expect rappers to wear expensive jewelry an to be covered in tattoos. Within their songs the use of drugs, sexism and violence is sometimes brought across. This is presenting rappers as bad role models in society and that people shouldn't’t really be looking up to them.

ICONOGRAPHYOn the magazine covers there is a lot of bright colours. this is so the main image stands out on the cover. the background seems to be plain with a lot of colourful bold headlines. The facial expression of the rappers are shown to be very serious, almost angry. This is because of the type of tone they bring across in their music.

GENDER REPRESENTATIONThe target audience for rap music is usually aimed at late teens but in some cases also younger teens. The way gender is represented In rap music isn’t conveyed very well though. The men are seen as powerful and dominant as the use of drugs and violence is used to describe them within the music. Women are seen as below the men and there is a lot of sexism within some rap songs. For younger audiences rappers are seen as bad role models as the media picks up on the fact that the musicians are demonstrating the fact that men should be violent and sexist towards other people in society.

MY REFLECTIONOn my reflection of the genre, after doing research on my findings I have discovered that the representation of rap is very different to other music genres. The magazine designs have a specific style with a close up of the model showing their emotions which is what they bring across in their music. The colour scheme within the magazines are bold and include a wide selection of bright and dark colours. My research has influenced me to do a rap magazine as it is very unique and different to other music magazines.
