Genre research.

My genre will be a drama. The lighting in a drama is usually quite dark and composing. They use a lot of the grays and the blues, drawing loads of focus onto whatever is on screen, creating importance.

Shawshank Redemption obviously use a lot of the gray because of the prison uniforms. But things like the sky and the buildings all have that gray and black theme. This makes them very bold but at the same time blend in with the rest of the contrast foreshadowing the drama that is everywhere.

The Godfather is one one the darkest dramas to ever come out in cinema history and in most scenes the very dark tones are used to highlight the most important people or objects that the viewer has main focus of attention on.

Les Miserable is a historical drama. The characters are easy to recognize as the surroundings are coated in shades instead of color. enhancing the main focus so the audience is forced to have there attention on the important objects or characters in frame.

Colors in most dramas serve some kind of particular importance that has ether to do with the story or the character, sometimes both.

Drive is a action, noir, indie, crime drama arguably a romance. The usage of colors such as the color on cloths. There all subliminal messages that are made to create meaning of the characters and then the viewer subliminally picks these hints up. Adding depth into ether the character or the story. Example. In this scene Irene (The woman in the frame) has just witnessed her hero, beet a man to death. Looking at the colors we can see the white vest suggesting her innocents. But the red collar says that something dangerous has a tight grip around her and she cant let it go because it is vital, like the red of blood.

Transcendence. Usage of blue behind him suggesting he is leaving something behind him or something in his past Is regretful or full of sorrow as we can also tell from his facial expressions.

Colors in dramatic films have significant meaning that foreshadow further meaning into both the characters and the narrative. Colors in dramas bare there own story that builds up to main events and are used to help the viewer understand the situation and feeling that the director intended to be shown on screen.

Dramas tend to use realistic locations so that the average viewer can relate to the environment in some way to make the world in the movie seem like it could happen In the real world. They also like to make sure that the time zones are politically correct adding to that realism and the relation to the viewer. That’s why the best films are usually based of true stories. Because the viewer can relate to the event justifying why a movie can be grate..

Forrest Gump uses real life events, such as the Vietnam war and the shootings of Kenedy and in the film they put a fictional character in the middle of all of it. Yet the opening scene is him just sat at a bus stop. Very realistic location, easy to relate to and the possibility has a grate relation to the viewer as sitting at the bus stop, pondering in there minds is highly likely to have happened. Creating that relation from the character and to the viewer.

Goodfellas Is a very violent drama yet in this scene the location suggests a civilenvironment. Three “wise guys” and a one of the men's grandma’s seems strange but because it’s a Location we can relate to we feel more immersed in the film so that when tensions arise the affect it has on the viewer is much more realistic/intense to weather them sat round a grand table in a massive/expensive house that wouldn't’t relate to the general audience.

Costume and props. Again in dramas they tend to try and keep them realistic and relative to the narrative, to keep that emersion within the world for the viewer. They also try to relate the props to the character if they hold visual meaning.

City of God, another violent film but also true to its nature. The main protagonist is an up coming reporter therefore he carry's a camera around with him that shows a incite into the character so without knowing he may be an upcoming reporter we pick up from the camera that he’s a documenter because he takes photos. Also you can see that because of the scenery, he looks like he would be from the favelas so he obviously would’t be holding a camera that looked to be worth of high value because that could brake continuity and the realism of the film.

Saving privet Ryan is a world war 2 film/ historical drama. Most parts in the film are true such as the events that took place but the story its self was bended to tend to the viewers entertainment. So the film is not a true story but Saying privet Ryan is the most accurate illustrations of the events that happened on D-day. That was because of a lot of factors, such as props. The props were used for the viewers engagement into the world and helped tell an acuter story by also educating the viewer with acutely correct props and costume.

Most dramas stick to the realism of the situation. So props need to be accurately correct to the time zone and type of film otherwise it’s a continuity error even if the film isn't based of a true story.

Characters and there representation in drama are typically best played as being quite serious but at the same time relatable. There story is never fully told so it keeps the viewer waning more and when the film finishes it sticks with the viewer as we never get to completely see into the character without making assumptions. Characters are usually quite distanced and blend out from other characters in there world and it becomes there own. And its because of the way the viewer follows the main character from start to finish so even though the characters world exists its only real when the viewer sees it.

Back to Forest Gump. The events that happen in his life seem highly unlikely but the viewer still invests into the world because of the way the situations and the character is represented. So in this scene forest is in Vietnam and the viewer can clearly see the powerful emotions Forest feels about this situation. Rather in an action film you would probably have the character beefed up and ready for war. So the situation becomes more serious because we see the main characters expressions that relate to the events that are going on around him.

The Departed some of DiCaprio's best work. The Departed seems like a very real situation that could happen because of the many elements that build that up, such as the very realistic/Stanislavski and unpredictable acting used to create this film. Themain character actualy dies in the film and it makes the viewer actually wonder ”is thisA true story? Again amercing the viewer into the world.

Music within the film/Drama depends on the type of drama and also what the directors intentions are within the film such as weather the director wants to go into more of interpret film with a lot of subliminal meaning or just fully realistic to immerse the viewer into the word. It also depends of the theme of the film so for example The Great Gatsby is set in 1925 yet the music in the film is from around the same time the film was made (2013.) This idea was used to create a fresh feeling to the environment even though the viewer knows that 1925 was a long time ago, The director tricks the viewer for a moment that everything they are seeing is new and fresh with the times.

Fight Club. A very unrealistic situation made real by the power of film. The end credits features a rock and roll theme that illustrates the hardcore violence and also the glamour of being powerful from the film. It also bares a resemblance to the film as the songs lyrics “where is my mind” and the film is about a guy that is taken over by his insanity but is in proven from it.

The Dark Knight. In this film the music is specifically made to show importance and attention to the character as the music is more of the Dark Knights theme music, for when he is presented on screen. This makes the viewer feel that the Dark Knight is very important, serious and dangerous/ powerful. His presence on screen is bold and the bold music ups the power that he holds on screen.

Fonts in dramas again depend on the story and the directors intentions for the viewer to interpret. It also depends on the age of the film. For example Sunset boulevard. A very serious and detailed drama but the font doesn't’t really represent that like what would happen now in film where everything is used to resemble something. The Font in Sunset Boulevard was probably used to draw attention as in the 1950s, things like trailers and adds didn't’t really exist and the only way to see a film was through a cinema. So back then they needed big bold words to orchestrate a following people to go to the cinemas and watch it then hopefully tell others.

So Titanic most people had already herd about it so there is no need for using big bold words that would reflect onto Titanic scale. So instead for most Oscars that had ever been won in a film, they useds a modest thin title because they know that the actors and the name sells for itself.

The credit fonts are very modest then. As they know that this is not just a film and people did generally die. So there's no massive credits stating who directed it or produced it exedra. Just a simple and modest pop up then vanish. So in dramas titles are not big and in the viewers face like a Quentin Tarantino action drama.

Rain man. More very Calisto style writing. Very linear and strait. Understandable as it is a drama. Serious and to the point. Worth mentioning, a re-release of Rain Man on blue had changed font to appeal to the new audience. Rain Man is a legendary film also so I think they used this font to basically say that it says Rain Man on it so you have to watch it again because of its states.

So over all from this I've learnt that even if the drama is not true, its still true to its self. Dramas keep things realistic to the narrative and I need to do these things in order to create an accrete style of drama to make sure I succeed in creating an immersive world that the audience can relate to.

I need to incorporate.

A lighting style that suites my film and also reflects on the drama ahead as it is only the opening credits.

The colors need to resemble subliminal meaning like a drama would and it has to create emotion/feeling so it has reason.

My location needs to be accurately correct to the story/narrative so that the viewer is immersed in a world that could be true.

Props and costume have to be suitable to the characters and the story and the also need to bare more meaning than just an object so that when they are used or visually seen in shot the create some kind of feeling to the viewer.

The Characters must have characteristics that make the viewer feel like they could ether relate to them or know them in some way. They also cant be stereo typed like some films like comedies or action films like to do.

If I do diced to add music such as diegetic instrumental, It needs to be relevant to the films story or characters.

Lastly, the fonts/credits need to be in the film but they need to flow. The font I pick will depend on the films story. Because it’s a drama I already know that it needs to be simplistic but at the same time It needs to be seen/noticed. I feel that If there is film going on in the background whilst credits are show it suggests that the credits are only there for the creators and not the viewer, as the viewers focus is on the moving image not the writing and that’s what I'm going to go for.
