It is being used for the continuous flight augering of a secant bored pile basement in Southampton. The site is extremely sensitive being within the medieval town wall. A method of characterising the skin friction at a pile soil inter- face by inverse analysis of the stress wave has been proposed, within the framework of the one dimensional stress wave the- ory. The method has been verified by application to stress wave forms from model tests of pile driving using a wide range of hammer free fall heights.

An upper bound calculation of the bearing capacity factors of a circular footing on clay, of which the strength increases lin- early with depth, is presented. Results are compared with those obtained by the slip line method, and with equivalent values for square and strip footings. The calculated values of bearing capacity factor are close to those for the square foot- ing and to those for the slip line method. The shape factor decreases significantly as soil anisotropy increases.

The theory of subgrade modulus is analysed for beams on sand and pile dowels on a creeping slope. Despite the non- linear behaviour of these soils, it can be theoretically and numerically proved that the moduli exist and give good approximations of the bending moments on these structures. The extensions of this theory to laterally loaded piles, walls and plates in sand and to laterally loaded piles in clay is demonstrated.

Lateral loading tests were carried out on full scale pile founda- tions on slopes of soft rock and sand. The sliding faces around the pile form a wedge shaped mass of soil. The ground bearing capacity can be expressed by the shear force on the slip sur- face. For homogeneous sand, the ground reaction force on the pile increases with depth, regardless of the elastic limit of the sand. These observations may l be explained using a Winkler type soil constitutive model.

The settlement-time behaviour of a multi-storey shear wall building during construction on a layered soil has been analysed. The structure was modelled using finite element analysis, and a finite layer method was used to describe the soil. Results are compared with field data from typical tall buildings in Shanghai. Soil anisotropy does not significantly affect the behaviour of buildings constructed in this manner.
