Geo-church is a form of Spiritual Orienteering. It’s fun. It’s thought provoking. It’s a whole new way of looking at
human activity in the landscape and finding God in both.
Lets do Geo-church!Newlyn to Penzance
St Peter’s Church to
Newlyn Green
• Take a minute to pray for all who worship here and for the village.
Parking in Newlyn is limited
but there are two public
cark parks at Duke St. and
the Harbour.
To visit St. Peter’s make
your way up Newlyn
Coombe. Sadly it is not
always able to be open.
The Revd. Allan Wyon
• Award-winning sculpture…..The marble sculpture of the Madonna and Child in the niche of the chancel was sculpted by Alllan Wyon and won a bronze medal at the Paris International Exhibition. There is also a crucifix carved by Alan Wyon and a terracotta relief reredos depicting the ‘Last Supper’ (after da Vinci) above the High Altar.
Contact with Italy…all down to pilchards! The Italian Tabernacle came to the church due to the pilchard trade with Italy, and is in the Lady Chapel. It depicts the Annunciation and Nativity. The altar in the St. Francis aisle contains a relic of St. Francis, again brought back from Italy after the tomb was opened with permission of the Pope in 1926.
The Revd Allan Gairdner Wyon FRBS
RMS (1882 - 26 February 1962) was a
British die-engraver and sculptor and, in
later life, vicar in Newlyn, Cornwall.
Many of his works are memorials with a
number located in British cathedrals.
Other, more decorative, works include
the relief of a male figure representing
the East Wind on the London
Underground headquarters building at
55 Broadway above St. James's Park
Underground Station.
Newlyn Coombe to Tolcarne
• Newlyn brings in the greatest variety of high quality fish in Britain
• Many still work in Fishing and related industry
• Pray for The Fishermen's Mission• www.fishermensmission.org.uk
Make your way through
Newlyn carefully to
The Fishermen’s Memorial at
the end of Art Gallery Terrace
TR18 5PR
There are opportunities for
refreshment as you go!
The Fishwives Choir
• You can download their single at this link if you have iTunes
• https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/when-boat-comes-in-eternal/id675149831
The is choir was formed in
response to the success of
The Military Wives to raise
money for the families of
fishermen lost or injured at
sea. This is still a more
common occurrence than
many people realise.
Newlyn Green to The
Skatepark
• Newlyn Green is well know for its Charity Raft Race and the new Skatepark has brought joy to many young people in Penzance
• Think of something that you find fun and say thank you to God for it.
• Pray for young people in our community
Head along the edge of Newlyn
Green towards Wherry Town on
the SW Coast path route.
Penzance Promenade to Jubilee Pool
• In former years the Promenade was home to a Dance Hall and a Theatre and many young people met their partners here on Saturday and Sunday evenings.
• Pray for all in loving relationships and those who hope to find someone to love them.
Fancy a swim?
Give thanks for the work
of Lifeguards here and on
our beaches in summer
St. Mary’s Church, Penzance
• A guide to St. Mary’s says, “Nothing of the severe granite exterior, impressive though it is, can prepare the visitor for the light and airiness of the interior with its impressive rococo-gothic.”
• In other words it is like The Tardis! Take a look inside! Pray for those who worship here and for Ministry to the town.
If you head up the road
opposite the Jubilee Pool
heading away from the
Promenade, a stone arch
takes you into the
churchyard of St. Mary’s
Church. The church is often
open in the morning.
St. Mary’s interiorThe present Georgian church sits well with the rest of Chapel St. but there has been a church here since the 9th century. This is the earlier one.
• Unlike many churches St. Mary’s interior has changed many times
in its history. • It continues to
develop as a centre for Spirituality and the Arts and as a focus for our work with schools in the area in particular
Many people still remember this interior from before the fire in 1985. It replaced a Victorian one which had replaced the original Georgian one!
Penzance Docks• While Penzance Dock is now famous mainly
for the Ferry to the Scilly Isles but for most of its life it was a thriving commercial dock.
• Its future development remains an issue of both importance and controversy. Please pray for all involved.
• The Psalmist says, He made the storm be still and the waves of the sea were calmed. Then were they glad because they were at rest, and he brought them to the haven they desired. Ps 107:30-31
• Think of somewhere you feel safe and can relax and say thank you for it.
Head down Quay St. and turn left
Trinity House
Can you see this lighthouse marking the harbour entrance?
Opposite the Dock you are
standing near to the old
Weighbridge and the local
headquarters of Trinity
House, the government
organisation that still takes
responsibility for our
Lighthouses. Not far away
are some famous and still
important ones like the
Bishop’s Rock Lighthouse
at Land’s End (opposite)
• Think of ways in which God guides us in our lives?
• What helps us to navigate through the storms of life?
• Have you ever been like a lighthouse for someone?
Psalm 119 v105 Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
The Town Waterfront
• Take care as you head over The Ross Bridge and on up Wharf Rd. toward the Station and Bus Station
• Despite the dominance of the sea in your view other transport links are vital for our economic and social well-being. Buckingham Palace, Harrods and Convent Garden Flower market are all supplied from this area.
• Pray for all who work in the public transport and freight transport services on which we all depend.
Lescudjack Hill Fort and
St. John’s Church
• You may wish to end your walk now and find a café! But if you are feeling brave you could cross the main road by the station and head up Penrose Terrace, Lescudjack Road, and Castle Road to the Hill Fort. It is quite a climb, but you will get a final splendid view of Mount’s Bay back to Newlyn and Paul.
• This is the area served by the Penlee Cluster churches. You could visit St. John’s Church (by taking the unnamed road off Lescudjack Rd., which we know as Trewartha Terrace!)
• Pray for its ministry in this part of the town where many families live.
St. John’s is a fine Victorian Church with a modern outlook on life
We hope you enjoyed your experience of Geo-church. We believe in praying with our eyes open and our hands holding a
map! Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in
darkness, but will have the light of life.” Jn8:12
