U S U A L R E S I D E N T S P R O F I L E E X P L A N A T O R Y N O T E S...............................................................INTRODUCTION 1. The Usual Residents Profile differs from other Census Community Employed full-time/ 9. For Census purposes, people who stated they were employed, but

Profiles in that it provides data based on where people 'usually' live or part-time (cont'd) worked zero hours in the week prior to Census night have been codedtheir 'usual address' rather than where they were counted on Census to 'employed part-time'.night.

Nfd 10. Nfd means 'not further defined'.2. 'Usual' address is that address at which the person lived or intendedto live for a total of 6 months or more in 2001. Postcode of 11. POCUCP is derived from the postcode of usual residence as reported by

Usual Residence the respondent in answer to question 7 on the Population Census form. 3. This profile provides 28 tables based on Usual Residents of Statistical POCUCP comprises all Australia Post postcodes (except secondary Local Areas (SLAs) and aggregates of SLAs and is available for the following postcodes) valid at the time of the Population Census plus several codesgeographic levels: SLA, LGA, SSD, SD, S. Dist., Postcode of Usual used to classify uncodeable responses. The total of the States and Territories Residence, State and Australia. does not add up to the Australian total because some postcodes cross State

borders. Some postcodes my be counted in more than one state.4. Information was collected from the 2001 Census of Population andHousing. Social Marital 12. Social Marital Status is the relationship status of an individual with

Status reference to another person who is usually resident in the household. A5. Each table title in the Usual Residents Profile consists of two marriage exists when the two people live together as husband and wife, parts. The first part lists the variables used in the table. The second or partners, regardless of whether the marriage is formalised throughpart describes the table population. registration. In the 2001 Census, where information about same-sex

couples is volunteered in the relationship question, it is included6. A glossary of terms and concepts used in the Usual Residents in the family coding and classified as a partner in a de facto marriage.Profile appears below.

Table Population 13. Table population is a description of what the table is counting. For7. For more information on classifications and Census concepts, see example, tables containing marital status usually have a table populationthe 2001 Census Dictionary (Cat. No. 2901.0). of persons aged 15 years and over. The population appears under the table title.

GLOSSARYEmployed full-time/ 8. Employed full-time means that the person worked 35 hours or morepart-time in all jobs held during the week prior to Census night. Employed part-time

means that the person worked less than 35 hours in all jobs during the week prior to Census night.

U S U A L R E S I D E N T S P R O F I L E E X P L A N A T O R Y N O T E S (cont'd)............................................................………….DATA QUALITY 14. For further information on the data quality of Indigenous census data, see Population Undercount 20. Although the Census aims to count each person once, there are

Distribution, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians (Cat. No. 4705.0). This some people who are missed and others who are counted more than publication presents counts for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians from the once. A post enumeration survey is conducted soon after the Census 2001 Census for Indigenous geographic areas, accompanied by information on data to measure the undercount.quality to help interpret the data. Population estimates of the Indigenous population basedon the 2001 Census are also included. For comprehensive information on the quality of 21. Further information on data quality will be provided progressively inIndigenous census data, see Population Issues, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Census Update and in the 2001 Census fact sheets and working papers.Australians (Cat. No. 4708.0).

15. The Census is subject to a number of inaccuracies resulting fromerrors by respondents or mistakes in collection or processing of the data. Some of these are overcome or 'repaired' by careful processing procedures and quality management of the processing itself. Theeffect of those that remain is generally slight, although it may be moreimportant for small groups in the population. The main kindsof error to keep in mind are:

Partial non-response 16. In some cases where an answer was not provided to a questionan answer was imputed or derived (often from other information onthe form). In other cases a 'not stated' code was allocated.

Processing error 17. While such errors can occur in any processing system, qualitymanagement is used to continuously improve the quality of processeddata, and to identify and correct data of unacceptable quality.

Random adjustment 18. Cells containing small values are randomly adjusted to avoid releasing information about particular individuals, families or households. The effect of random adjustment is statistically insignificant.

Respondent error 19. Processing procedures cannot detect or repair all errors madeby persons in completing the form, therefore some may remain in final data.
