PROTECTION STRATEGY INFORMATION

Min. Boom Length (FT): 12,000 Booming Method: Containment, Protection/Exclusion

Boom Type:

Protection Strategy: Protect Arsenicker Keys with 10,000' of shallow water boom. Use two shallow water skimming systems consisting of 1000' of shallow water containment boom. Use open water skimming system to recover the oil as far off shore as possible. Minimum resources needed for on water recovery: 2 shallow water skimmers. 5,000' deflection boom, size and type to be determined by location of spill and weather conditions to include wind and sea state. Response strategy to be based on over flight observations and trajectory modeling if available. Availability of collection/deflection booms and weather/tidal conditions will affect tactics and resource protection strategies. Protection will be focused on choke points to prevent contamination of sensitive areas. Near shore, consider sorbent boom or snare boom deployed by shallow water vessels to protect sensitive shorelines. In-situ burning may be a consideration.

INLET SUMMARY SHEET

SITE: Old Rhodes, Broad Creek, and Angelfish Creek Channels, Dade and Monroe

Counties, Florida

DATE AND TIME OF ORIGINAL FIELD SURVEY [TIDE]: 23 June 1994; 1430

[Low @ 1511 (-0.7); Ocean Reef Harbor, Key Largo]

UPDATED:

In October 2011 using imagery collected in 2010 and 2011.

RANKING (DEGREE OF DIFFICULTY): (see ranking scale)

B.

PRINCIPAL RESOURCES AT RISK:

Mangroves, wading birds, and the American crocodile. Marina facilities and boats. For further

information refer to the recent ESI map and data and the GRP.

PRELIMINARY PROTECTION STRATEGY:

Use a combination of deflection boom and protection boom to divert oil away from the main

inlet channel. Also place protection boom obliquely across some of the inlet channels

themselves. Open water collection would be the most efficient means of recovering spilled

product in this area. Therefore, we are proposing that a skimmer system be placed outside the

main inlet area to do open water collection. Staging a land-based clean-up operation would be

difficult in this rather remote area.
