We promise you a first-rate learning experience; many of our lecturers have a wealth of experience in their chosen profession, so you’re getting industry-relevant teaching to help you shine in your chosen career. Many are also involved in research, bringing the latest theories into the classroom.

Dr Katy ChamberlainLecturer in Geology

Before she came to Derby Katy spent time in Japan, investigating the link between plutonic and volcanic rocks, and in Durham, where she studied volcanic activity at Ascension Island, an important strategic airbase and key location in the Atlantic Ocean. For her PhD in New Zealand, she studied the timescales associated with and assembly of magma chambers that fed super-eruptions. She encourages her students to become independent thinkers: “I like my students to have the confidence to work on their own projects but check in with them regularly. I enjoy the interaction and the probing questions that come from them. They should test us and question us.”

Katy’s global experiences make her best placed to lead on many fieldtrips for students and she’s a firm believer that “teaching in the field is the best learning environment because you have the opportunity to put theory into practice.”

Oliver TomlinsonSenior Lecturer in Geography

Oliver has 30 years’ experience of teaching and has been at Derby since 1984. His subject specialisms include cartography, surveying, photogrammetry, terrestrial remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems.

He says: “Many of these fields are at the forefront of technology and constantly evolving and maintaining my subject knowledge is one of the things I enjoy about my role. It is critical we keep abreast of the technologies used for research and embed them into our teaching so students graduate with current and appropriate subject skills for the graduate workplace – whether that be the use of smartphones for spatial data collection in the field or unmanned aerial vehicles for deriving point cloud models.

“Luckily geography is a ‘living’ discipline and every day the news is full of great examples that can be discussed in the classroom. I love it when someone has one of those ‘lightbulb’ moments when something suddenly makes sense.”

Industry insightPractitioners from a wide range of geography-related fields visit us to deliver guest lectures. They will offer insights into current developments within the profession and share their career experiences with you.

Placement opportunitiesPlacements will help you gain valuable experience to apply your learning. Student, Lauren Moore, spent a third year placement at consultants Envireau Water, where she worked at the sharp end. She was involved in ground and surface water sampling on a quarrying project, data analysis and an equipment audit, all the time building on her skills developed during the course.

Lauren says: “I feel I have enhanced my understanding that could benefit me in my future assignments. I enjoyed being able to throw myself into work that I have previously studied hypothetically.”

Broad horizonsYou’ll be taught by academics who are connected with universities across the world. Our global network helps to shape your fieldwork and learning experiences.

Global Development and Environmental Hazards student Yvette Griffiths went to Mexico as part of her Development Management in the Voluntary Sector module. “While I was there with Ninth Wave, I took part in turtle conservation. I even got experience of how to be a volunteer co-ordinator, which led me to be being offered a job which I took up after

graduation.”

When Rebecca stepped on to the volcanoA study trip to Tenerife inspired Geology and Environmental Hazards student Rebecca Winstanley to pursue a career in volcanology research.

After a recommendation from her tutor, Dr Katy Chamberlain, Rebecca successfully applied for a place on the International Training Course in Volcano Monitoring. This annual course, run by Geo Tenerife, is one week long and combines lectures from professional volcanologists with practical fieldwork.

“Our lectures covered a variety of volcano monitoring topics, from geophysical to geochemical, relating to the volcanologists’ research. Towards the end of the week we had to put all the skills we’d learned into practice to interpret past data from the island and work out whether it was at risk from an imminent volcanic eruption.”

Field days helped Rebecca visualise different aspects of volcanic eruptions, from the cone of the Trevejo volcano, which erupted in 1706, to the town of Garachico, whose old port was destroyed in the eruption.

These field visits were an opportunity to develop her practical skills: “The final field day we went up Mount Teide to take geochemical and geothermal measurements using infrared cameras and automated geochemical monitors. We then visited the lab where the Volcanology Institute of the Canaries (INVOLCAN) carries out its data analysis; we learned about some of the machines as well as the research they were currently undertaking on the island.”

Rebecca found that she was able to use what she’d learned on the course in her studies and to plan for her next steps: “The content related to my Independent Study project and helped broaden my knowledge. I also got to look at different aspects of volcanology, which I may have never considered, and that has helped me decide what I want to focus on in the future. The insight into research helped me to realise that’s what I’d like to do. I’m now completing a Masters by Research in Volcanology.”

Rebecca would happily recommend the course: “It’s a great opportunity to learn from some of the best volcanologists and to work with students from all over the world.” Photo: Rebecca Winstanley
