Introduction

The papers of George A. Turner, which span the years 1948 to 1979, include proceedings, correspondence, reports, subject files, literary productions and newsclippings. This collection was donated to the Seminary Archives by Dr. Turner in 1987 and highlights his interests, particularly in social issues, during his years as a faculty member at Asbury Theological Seminary. There are no restrictions on the research use of this collection. The finding aid was prepared by Ann Jenks in June 1987.

Biographical Sketch

George Allen Turner was born August 18, 1908 to Charles Doyle Turner and Bertha Hayes in Willsboro, New York. He attended the A.M. Chesbrough Seminary. He received the A.B. degree from Greenville College 1932 and the B.D. in 1934. In 1935 he earned the S.T.b. Degree from the Biblical Seminary of New York and the following year the S.T.M. During his six years on the faculty at Wessington Springs College in South Dakota, Dr. Turner pastored at the Congregational Church, Gregory, (1938-1939) and the Free Methodist Church, Wessington Springs (1939-1942). In 1942 he entered Harvard to work on the M.A. degree and emerged in 1946 with the Ph.D. While at Harvard Massachusetts (1942-1944). In September 1945 George Turner joined the faculty of Asbury Theological Seminary as Professor of Biblical literature. That first year he completed his doctoral dissertation, “Is Entire Sanctification Scriptural?” From 1947 to 1957 Dr. Turner pastored the Congregational Church in Russellville, Ohio. From 1957 to 1959 he was District Superintendent of the Kentucky -Tennessee Conference of the Free Methodist Church. George Turner married Lucille McIntosh of Mitchell, South Dakota October 8, 1938. They have two children, Allen Charles and Carol and five grandchildren. In the 1950’s Dr. Turner actively campaigned against segregation in the Kentucky public schools. This was finally overturned by a court case following years of speeches, committee meetings, petitions, letter writing and marches.

Dr. Turner spent his sabbatical leaves doing mission work in the Far East and on archaeological digs in the Holy Land. He has written numerous books and articles and has continued to be published since his retirement from the Seminary in 1979. His honorary degrees include the Doctor of Letters and Distinguished Alumnus, Greenville College (1964), Man of the Year, Roberts Wesleyan College (1974) and Distinguished Service Award, Asbury Theological Seminary (1973). Dr. Turner is Professor Emeritus of Biblical Literature.
