February 2020 - WELLNESS THEME

The Shape of a Heart

During the month of February, Valentine’s Day is commonly celebrated using the shape of a heart. There are heart-shaped decorations, sweet treats, and candies everywhere! But, don’t forget the most important heart shape of all, the shape of the heart within each of us. February is American Heart Month. Keeping our hearts in shape is an everyday job and requires healthy habits. Most children are born with a healthy heart, and it is important to keep it in good shape. Here are a few tips from the American Heart Association and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for keeping your heart in shape, being a positive role model, and raising heart-healthy, active children:

Quit smoking/use of tobacco products, e-cigarettes, and avoid second-hand smoke. Use of any type of tobacco product affects the whole body and can lead to illness, including heart disease and cancer. The use of any tobacco product, including e-cigarettes is unhealthy for young people. Smoking/vaping hurts non-smokers through secondhand smoke/vapor. Secondhand smoke is the combination of smoke that comes from a cigarette and smoke breathed out by a smoker. Breathing second-hand smoke puts non-smokers at risk of heart disease, respiratory problems, and for pregnant women, having low-birth weight babies. Children exposed to second-hand smoke are particularly at risk of developing breathing problems and ear infections. E-cigarettes may contain ingredients that are addictive, such as nicotine, and possibly harmful to developing bodies. The vapor cloud from e-cigarettes can expose others to chemicals that are not safe to breathe.

Be physically active every day. The heart is a muscle. If you want it to be strong, you need to exercise it. Help children to develop good physical activity habits by setting an example yourself. Be active for at least 30-60 minutes, 3-4 times per week, in a way that gets you huffing and puffing. Activities like running, dancing, or playing sports will get the heart pumping. Choose a fun activity the family can do together like jumping rope, hiking, or bike riding. Be sure to check with your health care provider before starting a new exercise program.

Eat a heart-healthy diet. Eat fruits and vegetables, low fat dairy products, whole grain foods, and lean proteins. Cut back on frozen dinners, pizza, packaged foods, and canned soups/broths that often have a lot of sodium (salt). Avoid drinks with added sugar and saturated fat. Heart-healthy diets help with maintaining overall health, including healthy blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels.

Keep weight within recommended range. Exercising and eating a healthy diet will help you to do this. Being overweight increases the risk of many health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Try to reduce stress and anxiety. Regular exercise and healthy eating may help you to deal with stress. Long-term stress has been linked to a variety of health problems, including heart disease.

Try to keep tabs on other risk factors you can change. Get regular check-ups and work with your health care provider on keeping your heart in shape. Talk with your doctor about your individual “health numbers” and work to keep them in the recommended ranges. These numbers may include cholesterol and triglyceride levels, blood pressure, blood sugar, and weight.

Make small changes and don’t get discouraged if you slip. These are life changes that will make a difference in your health in the long run. Congratulate yourself for each success along the

way. Practice heart-healthy habits and be a positive role model for your children. Show them how to keep their heart in shape!

2019 - 2020 Inclement Weather Procedures When, in the judgment of the Superintendent/designee, conditions exist which are hazardous to the

health and safety of students and employees, the Superintendent/designee shall take the appropriate

action by:

1. Delaying the opening of schools;

2. Dismissing students early from schools;

3. Closing school or division for the entire day, or

4. Taking other action necessary to safeguard the health and safety of students and

employees.

The decision to close schools for an entire day or to delay school openings will be made as early as

possible prior to scheduled starting times. Except in unusual circumstances demanding emergency

measures, the decision will be made prior to 5:30 a.m. on the morning of a closing or delay in opening,

so that the information can be broadcast on the news media prior to 6:00 a.m.

Two Hour Delayed Opening

Elementary, intermediate, middle and high school students arrive two hours late.

Morning buses will be two hours late. Students will use regular bus stops unless noted otherwise.

Field trips may be canceled pending weather conditions.

on a case-by-case basis pending assessment of road conditions and weather predictions.

Lunch will be served at all schools.

The AlphaBest before school program will open at 8:30 a.m. for all elementary schools.

GT Center classes at Haydon for third or fourth graders will be canceled for that day.

Early Closing

When schools are closed early because of emergency conditions:

• Students will be dismissed early as determined by the Superintendent/designee. • AlphaBest afterschool program for all elementary schools will not be open.

Lunch will be served unless notified otherwise by the Superintendent/designee.

Code Gray Closing

All classes and school activities (day and evening), including AlphaBest, adult education classes and recreational

programs are canceled. School buses will not operate. Rare exceptions may be made for important activities that
