M a p p i n g M o n t e n o t t e The first project of my f inal year was a ve r y i n t e r e s t i n g o n e , w h e r e w e h a d t o d i s c ove r a n u n c o nve n t i o n a l w ay o f m a p p i n g a d e s i g n a t e d p a r t o f C o r k C i t y. I w a s a p p o i n t e d M o n t e n o t t e , a p a r t o f t h e c i t y t h a t h a s t w o ve r y d i f f e r e n t h a l ve s , a n d

s o I d e c i d e d t o c r e a t e t w o d i f f e r i n g i m a g e s t h a t w o u l d e a c h c a p t u r e t h e f e e l a n d e m o t i o n o f t h e p l a c e f r o m b o t h s i d e s .

T h i s p r o j e c t w a s e n t i r e l y b a s e d o n r e p r e s e n t a t i o n , a n d f o r t h e f i r s t t i m e I w a s g i ve n t h e c h a n c e t o ex p r e s s my d e s i g n s a n d r e s e a r c h i n a w ay t h a t I e n j oye d .I h ave a l w ay s b e e n i n c r e d i b l y i n t e r e s t e d i n i s o m e t r i c r e n d e r s a n d

Everything for this project was m o d e l l e d i n S ke t c h U p a n d C i n e m a 4 D, a n d t o u c h e d u p i n P h o t o s h o p .

I w a n t e d t o c r e a t e a s p a c e t h a t w o u l d b e c h e a p e n o u g h f o r yo u n g a d u l t s t o a f f o r d , w h i l e a l s o a l l o w i n g t h e f l ex i b i l i t y t o g r o w a n d ex p a n d t h e h o m e a s t h e i r l i ve s c h a n g e a n d f a m i l i e s g r e w.

I d e s i g n e d a s y s t e m o f f ra m e s t h a t w h e n c o m b i n e d c a n m a ke a ny t h i n g , f r o m a s m a l l s t u d i o a p a r t m e n t , t o

a m a s s i ve f a m i l y h o m e . B e c a u s e t h e f ra m e s a r e e a s i l y s t a c ke d a n d a s s e m b l e d , t h e o c c u p a n t s o f t h e h o u s e c o u l d c o m b i n e t h e s e f ra m e s i n a ny w ay t h ey w o u l d l i ke , t h u s c r e a t i n g t h e i r i d e a l h o m e w i t h o u t a ny a r c h i t e c t u ra l o r c o n s t r u c t i o n a l k n o w l e d g e .

I t h e n w e n t o n a n d s t u d i e d h o w t h i s s y s t e m w o u l d w o r k i n a n a s p e c t o f a r c h i t e c t u r e t h a t i s o f t e n f o r g o t t e n by a r c h i t e c t s , s u b u r b a n a r c h i t e c t u r e . I c r e a t e d a s e r i e s o f h o u s e s t h a t w e r e a l l c r e a t e d u s i n g t h i s f l ex i b l e h o u s i n g s y s t e m , t o d e s c r i b e h o w t h i s s y s t e m w o u l d c o m e t o g e t h e r t o c r e a t e t h e o c c u p a n t s i d e a l h o m e , a n d I t h e n ex a m i n e d i t o n a l a r g e r s c a l e a s s e m b l i n g t h e s e h o u s e s t o c r e a t e a s u b u r b a n , s e m i - d e t a c h e d e s t a t e .

I used a variety of different programs i n c r e a t i n g t h i s d e s i g n . E ve r y t h i n g w a s s ke t c h e d f i r s t . A l l 3 D e l e m e n t s w e r e m o d e l e d i n C i n e m a 4 D a n d S ke t c h U p . A u t o c a d a n d I l l u s t ra t o r were used for l ine drawings, and then eve r y t h i n g w a s e d i t e d i n P h o t o s h o p .

U r b a n H o u s i n gFo r t h e e n t i r e f i r s t s e m e s t e r o f my f i n a l ye a r o f c o l l e g e I f o c u s e d o n s u b u r b a n h o u s i n g . I a c c e p t e d t h a t p e o p l e l i ke d l i v i n g i n s u b u r b i a , a n d I w a n t e d t o p e r f e c t l i f e f o r t h e m t h e r e . B u t i n t h e s e c o n d s e m e s t e r I d e c i d e d I w o u l d a p p r o a c h h o u s i n g i n a d i f f e r e n t w ay, a n d I w a n t e d t o c r e a t e a h o u s i n g t y p o l o g y s i m i l a r t o t h a t o f t y p i c a l s u b u r b a n h o u s i n g , b u t i n a n u r b a n e nv i r o n m e n t . I a l s o w a n t e d my i n t e r ve n t i o n t o b e s p e c i f i c t o C o r k C i t y, s o I s t a r t e d f i r s t l o o k i n g a t t h i n g s t h a t a r e s p e c i f i c t o t h e c i t y a n d t h e n , s o r t o f by a c c i d e n t , I d i s c ove r e d a n i n t e r e s t i n g t y p o l o g y w i t h i n t h e u r b a n b l o c k i t s e l f. B a s i c a l l y, e a c h b l o c k i s b u i l t o n a f a i r l y r e c t i l i n e a r s h a p e , w i t h b u i l d i n g s a l o n g t h e p e r i m e t e r. T h ey t y p i c a l l y h ave c o m m e r c i a l u n i t s o n t h e g r o u n d f l o o r, a n d a c c o m m o d a t i o n o n t h e u p p e r f l o o r s . T h e s e b l o c k s w o u l d h ave o r i g i n a l l y h a d a l a r g e o p e n

g r e e n s p a c e i n t h e c e n t r e o f t h e block, but over time, the green space w a s s a c r i f i c e d f o r s m a l l , ra n d o m l y d eve l o p e d ex t e n s i o n s . T h e g r e e n s p a c e w a s eve n t u a l l y c o m p l e t e l y r e m ove d , c r e a t i n g a r e a l l y p o o r l iving condition for the surrounding t e n a n t s . S o my p r o p o s a l w a s t o r e m ove a l l t h i s w a s t e d s p a c e , a n d t o r e - i n j e c t g r e e n r e c r e a t i o n a l s p a c e b a c k i n t o t h e c e n t r e o f t h e b l o c k . B u t I o bv i o u s l y c o u l d n’ t j u s t r e m ove t h i s ex t e n s i o n s p a c e , a s i t i s u s e d . S o I p r o p o s e d r e - i n s e r t i n g t h e ex t e n s i o n s i n a m o r e o r g a n i s e d w ay, e n s u r i n g t h a t t h e s p a c e w a s u s e d e f f i c i e n t l y, b u t a l s o c r e a t i n g p r i v a t e ex t e r n a l s p a c e t o t h e h o u s i n g u n i t s o n t h e u p p e r f l o o r s .

I a l s o p r o p o s e d f i l l i n g a ny g a p s i n t h e p e r i m e t e r w i t h m o r e h o u s i n g u n i t s , u n i t s t h a t t r i e d t o s a t i s f y w h a t p e o p l e w a n t e d f r o m s u b u r b a n h o u s i n g b u t i n t h e m i d d l e o f t h e c i t y. T h e i d e a w a s t o r e c r e a t e a s u b u r b a n a t m o s p h e r e w i t h i n t h e c i t y, s o a s t o g e t t h e b e s t o f b o t h w o r l d s , s o t o s p e a k .

S o I c h o s e a s i t e t h a t i s l o c a t e d b e t w e e n O l i ve r P l u n ke t t s t r e e t a n d t h e S o u t h M a l l i n C o r k C i t y, b u t t h e t h e o r y i s t h a t t h i s t y p o l o g y c o u l d b e d u p l i c a t e d i n a l m o s t eve r y b l o c k i n t h e e n t i r e c i t y, a s eve r y b l o c k i s d e s i g n e d i n t h e s a m e w ay. T h e d e s i g n w o u l d a l t e r s l i g h t l y d e p e n d i n g o n t h e l o c a t i o n i n t h e c i t y.
