Goal 1: Eradicate extreme poverty and hungerAchievements:

- Goal to reduce the number of people living on less than $1.25 a day by half has been met - now only 22% of world population compared to half in 1990

Limits:- 6 out of 9 regions have not halved the number of

undernourished people- Many regions experiencing only small reductions in

extreme poverty - the reaching of the goal possibly due to dramatic improvements in poverty in China, not elsewhere.

Goal 2: Achieve universal primary educationAchievements:

- Number of children out of school is only 58 million throughout the world.

- Enrolment rates have increased 7% between 2000 and 2011.

Limits:- The pace has slowed down and more needs to be done

to achieve this goal.

Goal 3: Promote gender equality and empower women

Achievements:- Goal of having equal enrolment of male and female

students are expected to be met by 2015 (were met in primary and tertiary education in 2010)

- Has been an increase in the number of women employed in developing regions

- Increase in women in politics with 22% of seats in government held by women compared to 14% in 2000

Limits- Only modest increase in employment - 3%- Women still significantly under-represented in government

Goal 4: Reduce child mortality Achievements:

- Mortality rate of under-fives dropped by 50% from 90 to 48 deaths per 1,000.

- Vaccines for measles saved nearly 14 million lives

Limits:- Preventable diseases are the main culprit for child

mortality.- Sub-Saharan Africa and southeast Asia still experience

relatively high under-five mortality rates.- 4 out of 5 under-five deaths occur in these regions.

Goal 5: Improve maternal healthAchievements:

- Percentage of births attended by a sklled healthcare professional increased from 56 - 68%

- 52% of women having 4 or more antenatal check ups

Limits- Maternal mortality remains “unacceptably high” according to

the UN- No developing regions had managed to achieve the goal to

reduce maternal mortality by 75% two years before the deadline

Goal 6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases

Achievements:- Between 2000 and 2012, an estimated 3.3 million lives

were saved due to malaria treatments.- The spread of TB has reduced and some 22 million

lives have been saved since 1995.

Limits:- In 2012, nearly 600 children died every day because of

HIV/AIDS.- Only 39% of men and 28% of women (aged between 15

and 24) have comprehensive knowledge of HIV transmission.

Goal 7: Ensure environmental sustainabilityAchievements:

- Rate of deforestation has decreased- Over 2.3 billion people have gained access to safe

drinking water since 1990- Over a quarter of the world’s population have gained

access to basic sanitation- 200 million slum dwellers experienced improvement in

their living conditionsLimits:

- 1 billion people still resort to open defecation- One third of urban residents in developing countries

being slum dwellers

Goal 8: Global partnership for developmentAchievements:

- Net amount raised by members of Development Assistance Committee was $134.8 million.

- 80% of imports from developing countries entered duty-free.

- Debts of LEDCs reduced by nearly 9% of export revenue.

Limits:- Aid spending in some countries still is not at the level

set in 2000 at 0.7% of GNI.
