Become Remember-able“If you can’t create an emotional connection with your

customers...you’re going to lose them.”

Speaker, author and SiriusXM Radio personality, Patrick Henry, shows audiences across the country how to build loyalty and turn customers into fans. Our customers are not just the people who stand in front of us, but also those who stand beside us and behind us as well. As a former Nashville songwriter, Patrick learned that the most important part of a song is the emotional connection to the listener. In his hilarious and inspirational program, audience members will learn the three mindsets to creating an impactful customer experience.

8:45 AMEducator: NREMT UpdateRob WagonerSo how are Georgia’s educational programs performing on the National EMS Certification Examinations? Will the NREMT ever stop making us take the same old boring refresher year after year? If you’ve ever pondered these questions, please join Rob Wagoner, NREMT Senior Director, as he describes how the NREMT delivers more than just a test. We are an active member in the EMS community. Our certification examinations are the foundation of our organization, enabling us to support and develop National EMS initiatives with our community partners. Join us in learning more about our mission to protect the public and our nation as we discuss a dynamic National Continued Competency Program (NCCP) for recertification and the importance of EMS research in this new model.

9:45 AMProvider: Saving Your Own Life Kelly GraysonDepression, PTSD, mental illness. We deal with their effects every day. They’re the patients that often challenge our skills and our sense of compassion the most. We dislike dealing with them so much that we often ignore those symptoms in ourselves until it drives us from the career we once loved, or we read the obituaries of our brothers for whom help came too late. Join Kelly Grayson as he describes his battle with depression, and explores strategies for recognizing and dealing with those issues in ourselves. It’s time to erase the stigma of provider mental illness, because even the healers need healing now and then.

Educator: Life Experience: Are They ReadyWilliam PittHow does life experience affect the quality of providers we produce? Students in EMS courses often span generations and have a multitude of unique backgrounds. In this session we will explore varying types of life experience and their effect on the classroom environment. We aim to answer the following questions: When is experience (or lack thereof) an asset? A detriment? How can we bridge the experience gap and use EMS’s inherent diversity to enrich the learning environment?

11:15 AMProvider: Complicated Case StudiesJason GradyEMS education is primarily geared toward building a foundation for a lifetime of learning. It gives us the basic building blocks and tools to not only know how to treat our patients but to truly understand how to best treat them. What happens when you are presented with difficult patient scenarios not learned about specifically in an initial education program? These ambiguous situations can only be solved with critical and “outside the box” thinking through experience and understanding. We will look in depth at case studies where the initial treatment may not seem straight forward and the treatment priorities variable based on perception and experience. Through this discussion, thought and ideas will be presented from different views, offering evidence based options that will expand our understanding of how to treat complicated patients.

Educator: Teaching, Mentoring, and StewardshipKelly GraysonWhat is a preceptor, exactly? What is their role in your training program? Do your preceptors act as instructors, evaluators, and mentors, or are they just the medics who have managed to hang around longer than everyone else? All too often, good EMS education programs fail because they neglect to consider the importance of the person teaching your students how to apply on the street what they’ve learned in the classroom and skills lab. Join Kelly Grayson as he discusses how preceptors can make or break an EMS educational program, and how to bridge the gap between the classroom and the street.

1:30 PMProvider: Why Use Ketamine in EMS?Major Andrew FisherKetamine has become increasingly popular in emergency medicine over the past several years. This is due to ketamine’s effectiveness and safety profile. This lecture will discuss the history, pharmacology, and safety profile of ketamine along with recent studies and programs using ketamine. Several case series will be presented on ketamine use in the hospital and pre-hospital setting. At the end of the lecture one will understand how and why ketamine works and what protocols may be most effective for EMS.

Educator: There’s an App for That Chad Bird/Tamantha CumbieTired of teaching to the top of students heads? Apps are here to stay. The question now is how to make use of them in a productive, creative way. Learn how EMS educators can utilize Apps for time management, student proficiency, immediate feedback and virtual assignments.

3:00 PMProvider: Thinking at Light SpeedKelly Grayson“Two plus two equals four.” But how do we react when two plus two equals…cauliflower? Current EMS curricula heavily promote the use of assessment and treatment algorithms, but does the algorithmic approach to patient care help develop those “thinking on your feet” skills so crucial to our profession? This session will examine the perils and pitfalls of assessment and treatment algorithms and explore teaching strategies that encourage our students to think critically and develop the problem solving skills necessary for Thinking At Light Speed.

Educator: Lightning RoundWilliam Pitt/ Russell Griffin/Rob Wagoner/Chad

4:15 PMProvider: Poison Control – Street DrugsDr. Robert J. GellerIn the past decade there has been an unprecedented proliferation of novel synthetic substances that are being abused for their psychoac-tive effects. In addition, some old historical substances of abuse are starting to reappear in different localities. This presentation will teach you how to recognize the use of these novel psychoactive substances in your patients, describe common symptoms and complications that are encountered and provide current management strategies.

Educator: AHA Science Behind The ChangesRussell Griffin

We’ll address threat assessment, training, critical incident management, investigations, and victim assistance.

9:45 AM - State Office of EMS UpdateKeith Wages

11:15 AM - The Winds of Changes Rob WagonerThe NREMT developed a portfolio of vital skills that each Paramedic student must master in order to qualify for National Paramedic Certification. The completed portfolio becomes a part of the student’s permanent educational file and is a prerequisite to the NREMT certification process. In this first phase, a total of six (6) skills will be tested, five (5) of which are evaluated in the current Paramedic

Presenter: Dr. James Black12:15 PM - EMS Looking Toward the Future

General Sessions – Tuesday, September 15, 2015Psychomotor examination. One scenario will also be tested and it could reflect either a pediatric, geriatric or adult patient. Each candidate will be evaluated in his/her ability to manage a call, lead the team, direct all personnel and resources on scene, and effectively communicate while maintaining professionalism throughout the call. The NREMT anticipates incorporating the scenario-based examination in several phases, with Phase 1 beginning on August 1, 2016. You won’t want to miss this as you prepare for future Paramedic classes!

This presentation will discuss issues, including: how the Affordable Health Care will change EMS; the use of Narcan versus Bag-Vale- Mask; the use or not to use back boards; the benefits of developing all-hazardous preparedness to infection disease protocols versus an Ebola protocol; and the emerging roles of EMS from responding to life threatening illnesses or injury versus community paramedicine, responding to large crowds and violent scenes.
