What is Distribution?Distribution is the business of launching and sustaining films in

the market place. But what tasks do Distributors have to do? The distributors need to identify and deliver the largest possibleaudience for every film. It is a highly competitive business of lLaunching and supporting films in the market place, as they compete with another in order to make the titles they are handling an intrest to cinema operators.• They identify the audience • They have to think about reasoning behind seeing the production • Consideration of revenu potential across all formats of release• Persuading cinema operators to play the film• Building and developing plans and partnerships to increase awareness

and interest in the film • Aiming to achieve as much interest as possible into cinema visits

Examples of distribution companies• Warner Bros. • Metro Goldwyn Mayer Studios • DreamWorks Animation SKG• Paramount Pictures • The Walt Disney Company Ltd.• 2oth Century Fox Film Co.

Comparing our film to the types of films the Distribution Companies

have released previously• When conducting research we based our film on Legally Blonde, therefore we decided to use the same distribution company which we found out to be Metro Goldwyn Mayer. This specific distributor represents several types of films such as If I stay, 22 Jump Street, Poltergeist and The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies. If I stay is a drama and Romance, although not entirely the same genre it is still teen related meaning the distributors have experience in dealing with this specific genre. Not only this but they are more likely to be interested in distributing our film as they have had success in the past with their other films. Furthering on as they do not limit themselves to only one specific genre to distribute it represents that they will be open minded about our film and are mainly interested in the success rate and how it will appeal to the audience members.

What type of Audience will our film appeal too?

• To be able to have an understanding of whom our target audience we had to look deeper into Legally Blonde and Albatross . Legally Blonde had a PG certificate whereas Albatross was a certificate 15, from this

we wanted to base our age rating of something similar incase we decided to have illegal activities later on in the film for example. We believed that having an age rating between 15-18 enables us to gain an advantage to the market as around this age the public are more

likely to go out of the evening compared to an 8 year old for example. • We did stereotype our film to be more based upon girls as that’s what

we found to be one of the most common genres for teenage girls as they can relate unlike boys. On the other hand I do believe that our

opening is not limited to just UK audiences and has a wider appeal this is because the topic can be applied to lots of teenage girls in society

around the world therefore we have not restricted ourselves to just the UK public. In contrast to this it was produced by British people at a low

budget so this does put us at a disadvantage.

Possible release strategies, marketing strategies and exhibition options

In order to make people excited and aware of a new film it is important that advertising is done through TV, Radio and Social media.

Within today’s society and the directed age group of our piece I believe that the best way to enter the market would be through social media, this is due to the fact that several teenagers lives now consist of the regular checking off Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook and Youtube for example. It was stated in an article produced by the telegraph that young people aged

between 16 and 24 spend more than 27 hours a week on the internet. Due to these results a form of pop up adverts on these sites would help raise awareness of the film.

Another key way to represent our opening would be through TV adverts placed on a channel which often shows films of the same genre. By doing

this you know that you are presenting your piece to the correct target audience and you are more likely to get a response from them.

Another option is radio or word of mouth, similar to reasoning behind Social media this age group will either e in the car driving themselves or as a passenger either way it would be promoting our piece effectively.

Self Distribution • This is where you no longer include the distributor

alternatively you advertise the film yourself.• By doing this you are saving a large sum of money due

to the fact that you do not need to pay for a distributor, instead it could go towards a publicist, who would be

responsible for publicizing the opening of the film.• A disadvantage to self distribution is that overall it is a

lot harder to make awareness of your piece and it does not always work out in the end. It is a decision that

really needs to be taken into consideration.
