FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE; April 3,2014—Santa Fe, New Mexico—TheGeorgia O’Keeffe Museum is excited toannounce a slate of innovative familyprogramming for Summer 2014. TheMuseum’s new family initiatives expandthe outreach of the Georgia O’KeeffeMuseum—already a popular summerdestination—with both self-guided andgroup activities for young families.Buildingoneffectiveprogramsalready inplace, the Museum now providesinteractive summer activities for familieswhether they are touring the galleriesaloneorparticipatinginspecialclassesandevents.
“One of the best ways for children to have a rich experience visiting a museum is to have aconversation with their family members while looking at the artwork,” said Jackie M, GeorgiaO’Keeffe Museum director of education and public programs. “Our creative educationalprogrammingstimulatestheseconversationwhileinstillingaloveandappreciationofthearts.”
FamilyActivitiesintheGalleries:TheMuseum’scomplimentary,kid-friendlyDiscoveryGuideshelpchildrenexperienceandinteractwith theexhibitions currentlyon viewat theMuseum: “GeorgiaO’KeeffeandAnselAdams: TheHawai‘iPictures”and“GeorgiaO’Keeffe:AbiquiuViews”.Childrenandtheirparentscanenjoythepackets, find the prompts, answer questions, and offer opinions about the works on view. Toencouragefurthercreativity,theguidesincludesuggestionsofactivitieschildrencancompleteon-siteorathome.TheMuseumalsoprovidessketchbooksandpencilsfordrawinginthegalleries.
Forpreschoolagedchildren,theMuseumprovidestheillustratedbook,MyNameisGeorgia,whichtellsthestoryofO’Keeffeusingsimplelanguageandshowsexamplesofthesubjectsshepainted.
FamilyProgramming&Events:Summeractivities forchildrenand familiesat theGeorgiaO’KeeffeMuseum—featuringregularlyscheduled weekday and weekend classes—will begin with OK to Go. Held in the Museum’scourtyard, theOK toGoprogramoffers familiesaplace to stopandcreateanartpiece.RunbyMuseum volunteerswho provide art supplies and age-appropriate lessons, both kids and adultscreateauniquepieceofartthatrelatesdirectlytoHawaiiPicturesorAbiquiuViews.Theprogramwillrunfrom10:30am-12:30pmonFridays,Saturdays,andMondaysbeginninginApril,andwillbeheldthroughoutthesummer.TheO’Keeffe’sSaturdaymorningFamilyProgrambegins inthegalleriesbeforetheyareopentothe general public. Children and families are free to view, discuss, and appreciate theworks onviewand then goon to theMuseum’s EducationAnnex to create a pieceof their own. Themesrelate to those explored by O’Keeffe and other artists on view in the galleries and parents arewelcome to create a project alongside their children. The program runs from 9:30-11:30AM onJune28,July19andAugust2.
InpartnershipwiththeSantaFeOpera,theO’KeeffeMuseumwillofferOperaMakesSenseattheO’Keeffe,acreative,sensoryexperiencefor3-5yearoldsandtheir families.TheprogramwillbeofferedonJune1,2014from9:30-11:30AM.
