Dacre Industrial Minerals Inc. Geotechnical Assessment Report
Introduction
The author of this report was engaged by Mr. Herbert A. Metzger, to conduct a geotechnical survey that resulted in a site plan being produced for Dacre Industrial Minerals Inc., of Beachburg, ON.
The principal areas covered by this survey are: mining claim 593720, with a developed prospect, and reserves of dolomitic marble; and unpatented mining claims 1077425, 673504, 1077437, and 1195185, all situated in Griffith Township.
A field program was designed and implemented that established horizontal control points throughout the survey area. Salient features were subsequently tied into the control points by surveyed angles and all distances were chained in meters.
Mining Lands Surveyed
The mining lands examined and reported on, are located in the unsurveyed territory portion of Griffith Township, Southeastern Ontario. The principal claims surveyed are: mining claims 593720, 1077425, 673504, 1077437 and 1195185.
Location and Access
The property lies in the northwestern corner of Griffith Township, Renfrew County, approximately 30 km north of Denbigh and 45 km west of Renfrew, See Map 1, Dacre Industrial Minerals Inc., Location of Griffith Twp. Southeastern Ontario, Scale l :500 000.
It may be accessed from the west (about 16 km) via the Hyland Creek Road, a forest access road, which runs north from Highway 41 at Griffith and loops around the north of the township, and comes to within 500 meters of the quarry site.See Map 2, Dacre Industrial Minerals Inc., Location of Griffith Twp. DACRE INDUSTRIAL MINERALSPROPERTY EVALUATION - SPRING 2000
Introduction
The Dacre Industrial Minerals property is the site of a potential dimension stone quarry in dolomitic marble. Since 1984 considerable exploration work and some quarrying has been carried out, albeit in a piecemeal fashion. The present work is an effort to re-assess the true potential of the quarry and determine the direction of future development.
Access and Location
The property lies in the northwestern corner of Griffith Township, Renfrew County, approximately 30 km north of Denbigh and 45 km west of Renfrew (UTM 326800 E, 5021800 N, zone 18; NTS 3 IF/6). It may be accessed from the west (at about 16 km) via a forest access road (The Hyland Creek Road) which runs north from Highway 41 at Griffith and loops around the north of the township. The road ends within 500 meters of the quarry area. The site is isolated from all residences other than two hunting camps.
A contiguous group of 12 mining claims presently covers the property, two of which have been taken to lease (EO593720 and EO593719). As Griffith is an unsurveyed township, all claim lines run north-south and east-west. The quarry site may be described as 3 areas: north, west and south. (See Photographs). The present survey was carried out on parts of claims EO593720 and 673504.
History of the Property
Initially viewed as a prospect for industrial mineral filler by G. Pearse (1981), and subsequently held by Trisar Resources Ltd., the property underwent extensive exploration from 1984-7. Stripping, trenching, sampling and drilling of five holes are recorded in the assessment files. Unfortunately, the diamond drill core is no longer available for viewing. Sampling of the dolomite and testing of it as a mineral filler show it to have excellent brightness and good potential as a resource if the impurities can be kept to < 507o (general industrial filler) or ^07o (paint filler). Trisar, however, dropped the property and, in 1988, Pearse restaked it, began removing dimension stone blocks and promoting the quarry as "Two Island Marble". A small cutting plant was opened in Dacre. More trenching was carried out in 1996 and 1997, the latter under the name of Bertus Industrial Limited. Unfortunately, no planned programme of development under experienced quarrymen was ever undertaken and so any real potential for
Figure l Location maps:
(After Pearse, 1984)
-3-
this quarry as a dimension stone producer is, as yet, unproven. Pearse reported that the dolomite had passed all ASTM tests to a high standard, but no record of this is available.
The Easton Minerals property, also located in dolomite and lying about 2 km. to the southwest, was quarried for aggregate and industrial filler on a bulk sample basis in 1989.
Geological Setting
This property, located on the western edge of the Khartum Area as mapped by Themistocleous (1981), lies within the Grenville Province and is characterized by highly-metamorphosed sequences of late Pre-Cambrian age. A central belt of felsic-alkalic intrusive rocks is flanked on the northwest and southeast by remnant belts of metasediments which include the marbles of interest here.
Geology of the Property
Part of a 400 meter wide, northeast-southwest trending sequence of clastic and carbonate sediments, the rocks on this property are sparse in outcrop except in the quarry area. This is bordered on the west by a swamp and on the east by the rising slopes of a hill. Those units exposed within the quarry vary from very coarse-grained and quite massive (one to three meters) units of very pure dolomitic marble to more variable calcitic and dolomitic units with considerable impurities. These impurities are predominantly mica (phlogopite and muscovite) and serpentine and diopside with tremolite (locally concentrated in pale green bands a few centimeters wide). Graphite, pyrite, hematite and amphibolite are reported as well as narrow bands of pink granitic gneiss. Most noticeable are thin (usually less than one meter) scapolite and pyroxene-rich sills and dykes. The marble units, averaging one to two meters thick, strike at 020 degrees with a dip of about 30 degrees east. They rise in steps on the flanks of the hillside. Strong vertical jointing spaced at about 2 meter intervals with weaker, shallower jointing is commonplace. Other minor fractures, the calcitic stringers and veinlets and the irregular compositional bedding might be detrimental for dimension stone production, although some of these could be used to effect. Certain parts of the quarry (as well as trenches) were blasted. In particular, a thick unit of massive dolomite in the south part of the quarry has been severely fractured and it is uncertain how extensive this damage will be within these marble units.
The five holes drilled by Trisar show a thick (over 70 meter) sequence of marble, predominantly dolomitic and impure and intruded throughout by pyroxenide dykes. Overburden varies from 0.5 meters to 25 meters and there is some deep weathering. Although there are distinct and relatively clean dolomitic units, it has not been possible to create a reliable cross-section across the property due to the uncertainty of the hole locations, Also, for such closely-spaced holes there does appear to be considerable variation along strike. Nevertheless, a promising dolomite, well-jointed and dipping gently to the east outcrops over most of the 70 meter wide quarry area, a condition normally conducive to quarrying operations. If the extensive minor jointing proves to be surficial in nature

and if the presence of impurities and dykes can be avoided or used to advantage, in the hands of a skilled quarrymaster this may indeed be a viable operation.
Conclusions and Recommendations
The dolomite on this property is coarse, very white and dipping at an agreeable angle for quarrying, but whether or not it is destined for use as a dimension stone will be decided in three ways:
Firstly, can suitable blocks of dimension stone be removed from a test face by an experienced quarryman?
Secondly, does the marble itself pass the standard (ASTM) tests for dimension stone durability?
Thirdly, is the cut marble uniform, attractive and likely to be marketable?
It is suggested that a face be established on a quarrymaster's recommendation and test blocks removed. The pejtinent laboratory tests can then be carried out and if this proves successful, large scale quarrying should follow.
If the quarrymaster decides that dimension stone removal is not feasible then the remaining options are for the less profitable use of the marble as filler or aggregate. In the former case tests for brightness (on 20 - 30 Ib samples) in 1984 were very positive, however impurities will have to be kept to an absolute minimum for production of a prime product or one that needs no beneficiation. General industrial fillers require less than 5 07o impurities, paper fillers less than I 0xo. A large bulk sample would need to be extracted and tested.
As for aggregate, even for landscaping use impurities are still an issue, though less so, and economics of distribution is more important. Good market research into uses for off-grade blocks and waste material, as well as general aggregate products, will enhance the value of the deposit under all options. More trenching and drilling will be needed to further map out the resource, particularly in the case of filler or aggregate production.
