We are proud to be on the Pacific Rim Ring of Fire along with our many global neighbors.

To help attendees, let’s first pronounce the state name, Oregon: “OR-ee-gun.”

Our state has many distinctions, a few of which I’ll share here. The State Motto is “She Flies with Her Own Wings.” Sounds more like the TV show Portlandia. Portland is named for Portland, Maine on the east coast of the USA. It was decided in a 1845 coin toss, otherwise our host city might be called Boston. The Oregon population is around one tenth of neighboring California, or about 4 million residents. When California sneezes, Oregon catches a cold.

Geography: Hell’s Canyon at 7,913 ft. (2,400 m) is the deepest gorge in North America. Oregon boasts the deepest lake in the United States, Crater Lake: 1,949 ft. (593 m). That lake was formed with the eruption of Mt. Mazama 7,500 years ago. Many GRC members are familiar with Newberry volcano in central Oregon. In fact Newberry is just about at the geographic center of our 95,179 square mile (24.6 million hectare) state. Lucky field trip attendees will see both Crater Lake & Newberry volcano after the meeting.

Some of the oldest sandals in the world were discovered in Oregon. Nine-thousand-year-old sandals made of sagebrush and bark were found at Fort Rock Cave in central Oregon in 1938. Their owner’s descendants today include nine native American tribes in Oregon.

The Douglas Fir tree, named for 19th century Scottish botanist David Douglas, is the Oregon state tree. Many of you live in homes using “doug fir” lumber. And of course our state fish is the Chinook salmon, also known as the spring, king or tyee salmon. It is the largest of the Pacific salmons – up to 126 pounds (57kg)! - and most highly prized for the fresh fish trade. So enjoy some salmon on the menu while visiting Portland.

Portland is at the confluence of two large rivers, the Columbia and Willamette. The Columbia provides tremendous amounts of hydropower to the region. The climate around Portland, in the Willamette Valley only seems wet. In fact, our state capital, Salem gets only 39 inches (1 meter) of precipitation annually - it just seems like more to newcomers. That same climate provides an ideal setting for various crops, including wine grapes, wheat, Christmas trees, berries, hazelnuts and grass seed. Oregon grows 99 percent of the entire U.S. commercial hazelnut crop. The Filbert - as it is called here - is the state nut. Yes, many jokes derive from that designation.

I live along the Oregon coast, which can be reached in 90 minutes from Portland. We have 12 lighthouses along our 350 mile (568 km) shoreline. Contrast that with the Cascade Mountains (volcanos). This lofty mountain range extends the entire north-south length of Oregon, from California to British Columbia.

Let’s not forget that some of the best geothermal uses are at our many notable hot springs. Ones close to Portland include Austin, Bagby, Belknap, Breitenbush, and Carson and North Bonneville in nearby Washington. We Oregonians look forward to your enjoyable stay in our “Pacific Wonderland”

The David D. Blackwell Session

– Featuring geophysics research inspired by the work of Dave Blackwell.

Join this special session that brings together a collection of people and work inspired by Dave Blackwell’s 45+ years of dedicated teaching, mentoring and research on all manner of things related to heat flow. Hear presentations from long time colleagues, including a number of his former graduate students, who have become leaders and mentors themselves.

Dr. Blackwell earned a B.S. in Geology and Mathematics from Southern Methodist University (SMU) in 1963. While an undergraduate, he worked for two summers as a field assistant for the U. S. Geological Survey in Denver and served as a Teaching Assistant at SMU. Dr. Blackwell received an M.S. in Geophysics from Harvard University in 1965, and was granted a Ph.D. in Geophysics by Harvard University in 1967 with a dissertation on terrestrial heat-flow determinations in the northwestern United States. Following a post-doctoral fellowship at CalTech’s Seismological Laboratory, Dr. Blackwell joined the SMU faculty in 1968, where he has been ever since. He was named the W.B. Hamilton Professor of Geophysics in 1982.

He was a charter member of the GRC (1971) and has served as the GRC President and on the Board. He’s received numerous GRC awards over the years, including the Distinguished Service Award (1997), the Geothermal Special Achievement Award (2004) and the Joseph W. Aidlin Award (2009).

Although he ‘officially’ retired from SMU in 2013, Dave is still actively advising students, writing papers, and researching heat flow and geothermal resources in between visits to his ranch.
