fictive preparation for environmental catastrophes

PUBLIC RADIOACTIVE WASTE BIN

Nuclear accidents are catastrophic because radioactive material is released into the atmosphere. Carried by the wind, this fallout material may condense into solid matter or into precipitation or may get diluted in rainwater, resulting in radioactive contamination thousands of miles away. Radioactive particles will accumulate in organic matter or settle on the surface of objects, thus becoming a part of our daily life. And if our environment changes, we need to adapt. A research conducted at the Budapest University of Technology and Economics tried to find a solution for

handling toxic household waste accumulated in the wake of such an accident. A special waste container was developed that can be placed on public lands and has the appropriate shielding capability to allow for safe storage of waste releasing low and medium radiation. The shielding capability of the prototype was certified by dosimeter testing at the BUTE Institute of Nuclear Techniques. On April 22 and 23 in 2011, the object was put into operation for a trial run on public grounds in Budapest.partner: Peter Müllneryear: 2011

My partners and I were thinking about how to visualize the wind. We found the solution in the field of architecture. The man-made environment always interacts somehow with the natural environment. If hurricanes and heavy storms come frequently in an area, people usually build underground vaults or cellars for shelter. Since storm cellars and storms are inseparable from one another, it is obvious that the visual appearance of a storm cellar evokes the notion of storm

in our minds. So we decided to build the first Hungarian Storm Cellar in the garden of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics.Size, elements: one 150cm x 75cm metal door, one metal chimney 10cm in diameter, one wind detector applicationLocation: Garden of the BUTEThe object could be seen from 12 April to 12 September 2009partners: Attila Lakomcsik, Zoltan Varga

The Downtown Smogreductor, an algae-based air cleaning station was born as the answer for the questions of Blaha Lujza Square's environmental condition and its use as an urban space, reduced to serve through-traffic. The Smogreductor's custom circulation system was installed in a Buckminster Fuller type dome, evoking the inventor's DIY utopias and counterpointing the square's architectural decay. The introduction of a new player in the unbalanced urban ecosystem, native Balaton algae (Selenastrum

capricornutum) – that performed well as a celebrity too –, functioned as an unexpected producer of oxygen, relieving humans of inhaling harmful substances, while the Smogreductor, which also screened a film on algae's environmental role as an info-center, detoured masses from their daily routines, making the square a place to visit and stayLocation: Budapest, Blaha Lujza Squareyear: 2009

There is a small museum in Salzburg, the so-called Water Museum, where the numerous ways to use water are presented through videos, models and spectacular fountains. In this museum, water is exhibited as an object: it is suspended from its natural context. I was thinking about ways to bring water back to everyday reality. When the roof leaks in a building, people usually put bowls or buckets under the wet parts of the ceiling to collect the dropping

water. This act becomes quite interesting if it happens in a water museum. I created this situation with the help of its three visual elements: two pans, some water and wet-looking spots on the ceiling. The roof wasn’t actually leaking and the visitors of the museum seemed confused whether this was part of the exhibition. So, water appeared in two forms in the same place: as an exhibited object, which is taken out of reality, and as part of our everyday life. year:2009

The scene of the project is the basement of the central building of the Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BUTE). I was dealing with the relation of the university corridors and the models and showcases there, and the people, who contact this environment every day. Students of the university perceive those models as objects aimed at serving education. A typical example of this is a constructional model of a bridge on a corridor of the basement. The engineer student focuses on this model as a construction, on which the technology of

framework can be studied. This relation determines the connection between that certain place and the people there. However, a bridge can inspire completely different associations in other people’s minds: a bridge can be, for instance, an ideal place for bungee-jumping. This point of view reflects a different relation to the same object. With a small intervention, the traditional relation of the space and the people is turned upside down, and the space becomes detoured. year:2008

BIRD’S NEST In this project, again, I examined the corridors of the BUTE (Budapest University of Technology and Economics). The corridors of the central building are characterised by a certain state of abstraction: architectural plans in showcases, in a sterile environment. There isn’t any connection with nature. I was thinking about how I could bring some kind of naturalness, vividness into those lifeless spaces. I put a bird’s nest onto the

top of a showcase. The intervention is not spectacular, on the contrary, it is hard to find. It merges into its environment (like in its real context, in nature), though it brings new meanings, new contexts to the environment, it diverts the space around itself. It seems that the nest fits perfectly to its place, as it has been there for more than one and a half years. year:2008

PORTRAITS OF SALZBURGDuring my stay in Salzburg, I became quite interested in the city of Salzburg itself. When someone wants to familiarize himself with a city, he usually takes photos or makes drawings of that certain place. However, these photos and drawings are very personal ones. They introduce the place from the viewpoint of the individual. So when looking at such images, we might even get more information on the creator than on the subject of the image. If this is true, then switching the creator and the subject of the image would be necessary. I started collecting portraits of me which were created in Salzburg, though in this case the subject (me) was not as important as the creator, which was the city of Salzburg, with all its complex layers and situations I experienced. year:2009

MOZART IS WORKING FOR SALZBURG

MOZART IS WORKING FOR SALZBURGintervention into a traffic sign

Salzburg is about Mozart. In the city centre, unique round sweets, so-called Mozartkugels can be bought in every shop. But this is only one of the numerous products which somehow refer to the great composer. However, selling souvenirs is not by far the only source of income that is generated by its most famous son for the city. So it can be stated that Mozart is working very hard for Salzburg during the whole year, permanently, untiringly.year: 2009
