■ Important German authorsof the early 20th centuryAs a medium, journals provided the authors of this literary
movement with their most important forum for literary, artistic,
intellectual and political discourse. Each author wrote for one
journal or another, some publishing their work exclusively in
periodicals, anthologies and other collections. In their early
years, many of the most important literary figures of the 20th
century made their first literary appearances in periodicals. They
included Hugo Ball, Johannes R. Becher, Gottfried Benn, Georg
Heym, Klabund, Else Lasker-Schüler, Georg Trakl and Franz
Werfel. Authors, philosophers, theologians, politicians,
historians, art historians, psychologists, and many others not
belonging to the central circle of the expressionist movement,
also wrote for the new journals; such as Martin Buber, Gerhart
Hauptmann, Theodor Heuss, Hugo von Hofmannsthal, Gustav
Landauer, Rainer Maria Rilke, and Arthur Schnitzler.
■ Contemporary historical source:for diverse research topicsSome journals, such as “Der Sturm”, “Die Weissen Blätter”, “Die
Menschen” or “Die Dichtung”, had strictly literary aspirations,
whilst others exhibited a strong tendency toward political
agitation, e.g. “Die Aktion”. This variety makes them especially
interesting as sources for a vast range of different research
objectives: this collection serves not only as a source on German
literature of the Modern era, but can also be used for the study of
the history of art, theatre, film, dance and music between 1910
and 1930. Further, it is a valuable aid for research on European
cultural transfer and the historical reception of the German
Classic and Romantic movements at the beginning of the 20th
century. Not least, they are a unique body of contemporary
historical evidence.
■ A variety of search possibilities –thorough indexing and full text searchesFor authentic reproduction of their often fascinating designs, the
source works are presented as facsimiles. The entire full texts can
be searched electronically. The database offers the user diverse
options for accessing the entire contents, right down to the level
of the individual contributions. A variety of search criteria
provide easy access to the individual text and graphic contribu-
tions, thus enabling the user to work effectively with the sources.
Bio-bibliographical articles are provided for the 350 most
significant authors and an introduction by Paul Raabe rounds this
publication off.
The indexing of the texts is based on the 18-volume “Index
Expressionismus”, edited by Paul Raabe in the 1970s. For the
online database a further 36 works have been added to the canon
of titles, and their contents re-indexed.
The diverse search options and the extent of its indexing, make
this database a unique research tool for literary and media studies
as well as numerous issues of cultural and contemporary history.

■ About the editorPaul Raabe is a literary scholar and, according to the FAZ, “Germany’s
most well-known librarian”. With unparalleled energy, he influenced
institutions that are important centers in Germany’s academic landscape
today: From 1958 to 1968 he was director of the library of the Deutsches
Literaturarchiv in Marbach, before becoming director of the Herzog
August Bibliothek in Wolfenbüttel in 1968. From 1992 to 2000 he was
director of the Francke Foundations in Halle. Since his work in Marbach,
Paul Raabe has been recognized as a leading expert on Expressionism.
The author and editor of many works about Literary Expressionism, he is
regarded as having rediscovered the Expressionist movement in the
1960s.
