Historical notes

In 1889 Theodor Kuhn completed work on a 24-stop organ for the Protestant Church of Zürich-Unterstrass. He constructed the instrument adhering to the traditions laid down by his father Johann Nepomuk Kuhn, one year after our company founder's death. The organ was dismantled in 1911 and transferred to western Switzerland.

The condition of the instrument prior to the restoration

The organ has mechanically controlled cone chests. The technical systems of the instrument embracing the console, windchests and action are fully preserved. The pipework is for the most part original. Craftsmanship and material of the pipework reflect the high standards of quality which were set by Johann Nepomuk Kuhn. From the Neo-Gothic case only the substructure remains.

The restoration of 2005 - 2006

The restoration work embraced a thorough overhaul of the technical systems with the aim of returning the instrument to a new and functionally reliable condition. The slight changes to the stoplist which the organ had undergone over the years were reversed through reconstruction, thus returning the pipework to its original condition.

There exists a picture dating from 1911, the year in which the organ was dismantled (see title picture above), which shows the original case of the organ. With the help of this and the preserved pipework it was possible to accurately reconstruct the layout of the façade.

The restoration work was completed in January 2006. There is a detailed report of the restoration available.

We celebrated the completion of the restoration of this instrument with four concerts in our assembly workshop. We made recordings of all four concerts and have produced a CD. The CD gives a good impression of the diversity of uses of this organ, as a solo instrument and also together with other instruments and singers. The last piece (No. 12) from Franz Liszt "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" presents the full dynamic range and rich tonal spectrum of this exceptional instrument.

Since the instrument is arranged with its two manual divisions side by side, for a cone chest organ it is relatively narrow in terms of depth.

The base area of the organ measures 7.20 m x 2.45 m, without the forwards facing console. The height of the organ to the top of the longest front pipe is 5.60 m.

The case

In order not to limit the possibilities for a new positioning of the instrument a priori from an architectural and optical point of view, we avoided reconstructing the original case and swell box.

As an alternative to the case with the original façade arrangement, we also have in our possession an original Neo-Gothic case with a centre-weighted façade.

Besides a Neo-Gothic case, a modern design (for aesthetic or financial reasons) would also be feasible. The following four sketches present some of the possibilities which incorporate the original front pipe arrangement. Of course, these basic ideas can be refined and adjusted to suit the particular surroundings in which the organ is to be placed once a concrete project has been established. The fifth sketch shows a design with a slightly modified pipe arrangement and a new substructure.

For reasons of cost it would also be possible to construct a new upper section of the case at a later time. The colour of the pilasters in the façade (see page 1) would, of course, be adjusted to suit.


Prospects

This organ offers a unique opportunity of purchasing an authentic instrument in German-Romantic style which, having ungone restoration, is now in new condition.

In our view this instrument is capable of providing a high class of service for church and concert use or for educational purposes at an institute for Higher Education in music.

The price of the instrument can only be agreed once the structure of the case has been established and the new position of the instrument is known. The cost will be comparable to that of a new organ with the same number of stops.

Zeuge einer vergangenen Zeit Älteste Kirchenorgel der Stadt Zürich

zum Kauf angeboten Bei der Orgelbaufirma Kuhn steht die älteste noch spielbare Kirchenorgel der Stadt Zürich. Das 1889 erbaute Instrument stand einst in der Kirche Un-terstrass und ist nun restauriert worden.

Die ältesten Zürcher Kirchenorgeln gehen auf das späte 19. Jahrhundert zurück. Im Neumünster steht seit 1995 die alte Tonhalle-Orgel. Aber nur etwa die Hälfte der Pfeifen und das Gehäuse stammen vom originalen Instrument aus dem Jahr 1872; die techni-sche Anlage ist bei der Versetzung neu gebaut wor-den. Ähnlich liegt der Fall bei der Orgel der refor-mierten Bühlkirche. Das 1897 von der Firma Goll in Luzern gebaute Instrument ist 1985, unter Verwen-dung eines Teils der Pfeifen und des Gehäuses, von Orgelbau Kuhn in Männedorf technisch komplett neu gebaut worden. Ein anderes Bild zeigt sich in der katholischen Kirche St. Anton. Die pneumatische Kuhn-Orgel aus dem Jahr 1914 hat der Hersteller 2002 unter Verwendung aller noch funktionsfähigen Teile restauriert. Die älteste der nicht mehr in Zürich stehenden Orgeln - sieht man von einem Orgelposi-tiv ab, das sich in einem Basler Museum befindet - steht heute in der katholischen Kirche St. Maria in Schaffhausen. Sie wurde 1883 für die Landesaus-stellung erbaut und stand in einem Pavillon auf dem Platzspitz. Ebenfalls nicht mehr in Zürich befindet sich die Kirchenorgel, die Kuhn 1889 für die refor-mierte Kirche Unterstrass erbaut hatte. Das mit me-chanischer Spieltraktur und Kegelladen ausgestattete Instrument wurde nämlich im Jahr 1911 durch eine damals im Trend liegende pneumatische Orgel er-setzt. Die alte Kuhn-Orgel wurde an die Katholische Kirchgemeinde Saint-Maurice im Wallis verkauft und stand dann während neunzig Jahren in der dorti-gen Pfarrkirche im Einsatz. Als das Instrument 2001 auch in Saint-Maurice einer neuen Orgel weichen musste, wäre es um ein Haar einfach entsorgt wor-den. Doch die Firma Kuhn nahm die Orgel, aus denkmalpflegerischen und nostalgischen Gründen, wieder zurück ans Lager. So landete die von Theo-dor Kuhn, dem Sohn des Firmengründers Johann Nepomuk Kuhn, erbaute Orgel wieder dort, wo sie 1889 gebaut worden war.

Inzwischen hat Kuhn das Instrument gründlich res-tauriert. Der Spieltisch, die mechanischen Trakturen und die Kegelladen, alles originale Teile, sind wieder funktionstüchtig gemacht worden. Auch das Pfei-fenwerk ist zu etwa 70 Prozent original. Einige Re-gisterveränderungen, die vermutlich 1953 vorge-nommen worden waren, hat man wieder rückgängig gemacht, indem man die originalen Register durch Rekonstruktion der entsprechenden Pfeifen wieder einsetzte. Die restaurierte Orgel entspricht in der Disposition mit ihren 24 Registern, verteilt auf zwei Manuale und Pedal, somit dem ursprünglichen Zu-stand. Leider ist der neogotische Holzprospekt nicht mehr vorhanden. Auch der Schwellkasten für das zweite Manual fehlt noch. Diese beiden Elemente werden erst eingesetzt, wenn man weiss, wo die Or-gel anschliessend aufgestellt wird. Die Firma Kuhn sucht nämlich noch einen Käufer. Geschäftsführer Dieter Utz könnte sich als Standort sowohl eine Hochschule, zwecks Ausbildung, als auch eine Kir-che, für den gottesdienstlichen und konzertmässigen Gebrauch, vorstellen. Konkrete Verhandlungen mit der Musikhochschule oder einer Kirchgemeinde gibt es bis jetzt jedoch nicht.

Um das Instrument, das gegenwärtig in der Monta-gehalle in Männedorf steht, einer interessierten Öf-fentlichkeit vorzustellen, hat Orgelbau Kuhn kürzlich vier Werkstattkonzerte veranstaltet. Beim dritten Konzert trat Andreas Jost auf, der bei Rudolf Meyer in Winterthur studiert hat und gegenwärtig Organist an der reformierten Kirche Stäfa ist. Da die Orgel klanglich den deutsch-romantischen Typus verkör-pert, wählte Jost Werke entsprechender Komponisten aus. Dabei verstand er es ausgezeichnet, die ver-schiedenen Charaktereigenschaften des Instruments hervorzuheben. Da wäre etwa der weiche Plenum-klang oder der etwas eng mensurierte Geigenprinzi-pal in Mendelssohns f-Moll-Sonate zu erwähnen. Oder der fein ziselierte Klang in Regers Intermezzo aus Opus 129. Brahms' Präludium und Fuge in a-Moll erschienen, durch die Verwendung der vielen 8'-Register, in einem sehr grundtönigen Klang, und der Organist zeigte hier, wie kontinuierliche Steige-rungen bis zur Hinzufügung der Trompete 8' möglich sind. Ein virtuoses Finale bot Jost mit Liszts Variati-onen über «Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen». Noch einmal war die ganze Klangpalette des Instruments vom leisen Säuseln über das dunkle Rumoren und die milden Farbtöne bis zum mächtigen Brausen vernehmbar. Dass eine solche Vielfalt mit so weni-gen Registern auf nur zwei Manualen möglich ist, erstaunte wohl nicht wenige der Zuhörer.
