Dialing it up from long distancehelped Germantown in their 50-42win over North Shore Conferenceopponent Homestead in the Division 1sectional semifinal game, March 12, atWhitefish Bay.

The Warhawks will take their 25-0record into the sectional final againstKimberly in a rematch of last year’ssectional final at 4 p.m., March 14, atManitowoc Lincoln.

The Warhawks focused on one keyplayer from Homestead. Senior for-ward Jaylen Key torched Germantownin their two regular season meetings, scoring 25 and 26 points. He was heldto a single point in the first half andwasn’t much of a factor until the fourthquarter with 10 of his 13 coming inthat period when the Warhawks keptthe game under control.

“We sagged off our man andhelped on Jaylen,” Germantown sen-ior forward Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. said.“We knew that if he didn’t get going, then we knew that we would be OK.”

Germantown held an 11-5 lead inthe first quarter but Homestead cameback and cut the lead to 11-10 enter-ing the second quarter. A three pointbasket by junior forward Josh Muellergave the Highlanders a 13-11 lead, their first and only lead of the game.

     Junior forward Max Keefe’s basket

tied the score at 13-13. The Warhawksbroke the tie and scored six straightpoints and nine total in the last fourminutes of the first half to lead 22-13.Homestead closed the gap to fourpoints, trailing at the half 22-18.

Homestead cut their deficit to 26-24, but Germantown got hot in thethird quarter on consecutive threes byjunior guard Juwan McCloud,Lawhorn and senior guard BrianStuder to boost their lead to 11. Theyplayed better defense and didn’t allowHomestead to score in the last part ofthe quarter.

Lawhorn and Keefe made back-to-back threes in the fourth quarter togive Germantown a 45-36 advantagewith 2 minutes 59 seconds remainingin regulation. The Warhawks survivedpoor free-throw shooting in the lastminute of the game, missing five in arow before Theis made the last one toclose out the scoring.

Germantown helped themselveswith second chance opportunities.

“Every day in practice, (assistant)coach (Mark) Adams always say, ‘Getoffensive rebounds,’ ” Lawhorn said.“Homestead is a really big team, andwe used our quickness to get aroundthem to get offensive rebounds and getsecond shots and open threes. In thethird quarter, we had a couple ofthose. That really helped us push thelead out and carry it into the fourthquarter.”

Keefe and McCloud ledGermantown with 15 points each.Theis and Lawhorn chipped in withnine and eight points, respectively.

Homestead finished their season at 15-10.

The Germantown School District willseek more information about installing mod-ular space for instruction at RockfieldElementary School.

The School Board approved a motionMarch 9 directing administration to seekinformation for installing modular space forfour rooms at the school. The motion directsadministration to report the board within amonth regarding pricing and design for themodular space. The motion also includes arequest to seek a comparison cost for per-manent space at the facility.

“If we do go town this path, rest assuredwe’re going to do the right thing for ourkids,” School Board President RobertSoderberg said of the modular option.

Superintendent Jeff Holmes said thegreatest concern for space needs are atRockfield.

“Rockfield has been the most pressingsituation for us,” Holmes said. Holmes saidthat projecting how many students willattend class for a given year is difficultbecause district staff do not know preciselyhow many students will attend until schoolactually begins.

Holmes noted that the age of districtspace ranges between 47 and 87 yearsand that there have been changes in instruc-tion since the buildings were first construct-ed.

“When these buildings were built, a lotof the needs weren’t in place and the build-ings — you haven’t been able to keep upfacility-wise, with fulfilling those needs,” hesaid.

He described three options for address-ing space needs at the school:

    •Changing shared attendance linesbetween elementary schools to alleviatesome of the space concerns at Rockfield;

    •Installing modular space at Rockfield;and,

•Start considering permanent newspace at Rockfield.

“Of all the recommendations I have outthere right now, I think that (seeking perma-nent new space) is the least logical route totake, given that we don’t have informationyet from the community and the board willlikely need much more information of how itwants to operate as a school district in thefuture,” Holmes said of the third option.

According to Holmes, four modularrooms could be installed to provide spacefor a music and literacy room and classroom

space for the second through fifthHolmes said that the district wouldseek approval from the ToGermantown board as far as gettances to allow for modular space.

Holmes said he talked with supervisor, who indicated there warently a town ordinance related to space.

During board discussion, Sodererenced possible changes in attareas and asked if there could be a where two buses would arrive to selementary school age children family to two different elementary s

“There could,” Holmes replied. be difficult, but yes it could.”

ASK  THE  ADVISORASK  THE  ADVISOR Are You Following a "Tax-smart" Investment Strategy?

We’re getting closer to April 15: Tax Filing Day. And while there may not be much youcan do to change your results for the 2014 tax year, you can certainly look closely at yourtax returns to find areas you might be able to improve next year — and one such area isyour investment portfolio.

Of course, you may also find opportunities in other places, too. Could you have takenmore deductions? Could you have moved some of your debts into a tax-deductible loan, such as a home equity loan or line of credit? You’ll want to consult with your tax advisorto determine areas of potential savings.

However, you may be able to brighten your tax picture by making some "tax-smart"investment moves, such as the following:• Resist the urge to trade frequently. It can be costly to constantly buy and sell invest-ments. In addition to the commissions you may incur, and the possibility that such exces-sive trading can impede a consistent investment strategy, you could rack up a sizable taxbill. If you sell an asset that you’ve held for a year or less, any profit you earn is consid-ered a short-term capital gain, which is taxed at the same rate as your ordinary income. So, for example, if you bought Investment ABC for $1,000 on January 5, 2014, and yousold it for $1,250 on Dec. 31, 2014, you’d be taxed on your $250 gain. If you are in the28% tax bracket, you’d owe $70 in taxes. But if you had waited until January 6, 2015, andyou sold your investment for the same $250 gain, you’d pay the more favorable long-termcapital gains tax rate of 15%, which translates into $37.50 in taxes — just over half of what you’d owe at the short-term rate. If you habitually sold investments after owningthem less than a year, the taxes could really add up —so try to be a "buy-and-hold"investor.• Increase your 401(k) contributions. If you aren’t already participating in your 401(k)or similar plan, start now. And if you are contributing, boost your contributions whenev-er your salary goes up. You typically put "pretax" dollars in your 401(k), so the more youadd, the lower your annual taxable income. Plus, your earnings can grow tax deferred.

    • "Max out" on your IRA. Depending on your income level, you may be able to deductsome, or all, of your contributions to your traditional IRA — and these deductible con-tributions can lower your taxable income. Plus, your investment can grow tax deferred.(Keep in mind, though, that taxes will be due upon withdrawal, and any withdrawals madebefore you reach 591/2 are subject to a 10% IRS penalty.)If you contribute to a Roth IRA, your contributions are never deductible and won’t loweryour taxable income, but your earnings are distributed tax free, provided you’ve hadyour account at least five years and you are older than 59_. In 2015, you can contribute$5,500 to your IRA, plus an additional $1,000 catch-up contribution if you are 50 orolder— and it’s almost always a good idea to "max out" your contributions each year.

By following a buy-and-hold investment strategy and using those tax-advantagedaccounts available to you, you may be able to help yourself — at tax time and beyond.

Colorectal Cancer Awareness Monthpreventable • treatable • beatable

The following information was taken from theCenters for Disease Control Website.

Among cancers that affect both men andwomen, colorectal cancer (cancer of the colon orrectum) is the second leading cause of cancerdeaths in the United States. Every year, about140,000 Americans are diagnosed with colorec-tal cancer, and more than 50,000 people diefrom it. But this disease is highly preventable, bygetting screened beginning at age 50.

What You Can Do•If you’re aged 50 to 75, get screened for

colorectal cancer regularly. Screening tests helpprevent colorectal cancer by finding precancer-ous polyps (abnormal growths) so they can beremoved. Screening also finds this cancer early, when treatment can be most effective.

    •Be physically active.•Maintain a healthy weight.•Don’t drink too much alcohol.•Don’t smoke.

Colorectal cancer screening saves lives.Screening also helps find colorectal cancer at anearly stage, when treatment often leads to a cure.About nine out of every 10 people whose col-orectal cancers are found early and treatedappropriately are still alive five years later.

While screening rates have increased in theU.S., not enough people are getting screened forcolorectal cancer. In 2012, 65% of U.S. adultswere up-to-date with colorectal cancer screening;7% had been screened, but were not up-to-date;and 28% had never been screened.

(Data source: Centers for Disease Controland Prevention (CDC). Vital Signs: Colorectal can-cer screening test use—United States, 2012.MMWR 2013;62(44):881–888.)

Fast FactsRisk increases with age. More than 90% of

colorectal cancers occur in people aged 50 andolder.Precancerous polyps and colorectal cancer

don’t always cause symptoms, especially at first. You could have polyps or colorectal cancer andnot know it. That is why having a screening test isso important. If you have symptoms, they mayinclude—

Blood in or on the stool (bowel movement).Stomach pain, aches, or cramps that do not

go away.Losing weight and you don’t know why. These symptoms may be caused by some-

thing other than cancer. If you have any of them, see your doctor. Some people are at a higher riskthan others for developing colorectal cancer. Ifyou think you may be at high risk, talk to your doc-tor about when and how often to get tested.

There are several screening test options.Talk with your doctor about which is right for

    you.Colonoscopy (every 10 years).

High-sensitivity fecal occult blood test (FOBT),stool test, or fecal immunochemical test (FIT)(every year).

Sigmoidoscopy (every 5 years, wevery three years).

In 2011 (the most recent year numavailable)—

•135,260 people in the United Stdiagnosed with colorectal cancer, 70,099 men and 65,161 women.*

•51,783 people in the United Stfrom colorectal cancer, including 26,and 24,979 women.*

(*Incidence counts cover about 9U.S. population; death counts cover aboof the U.S. population. Use caution wparing incidence and death counts.)

Happy... St. Patrick’s Day Happy... St. Patrick’s DayShamrock Used by St. Patrick to Reveal the Godhead! Many viewed the Shamrock are representing rebirth and eternal life prior to Patrick’s arrival in Ireland. Legend credits Patrick with teaching the Ithe doctrine of the Godhead, the Trinity by showing the 3-leafed Shamrock. “For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father,Word (Jesus), and the Holy Ghost, and these three are one.” (1 John 5:7, King James Bible). St. Patrick preached in western Ireland, air on the “Hill of Slane, County Meath” explaining the Godhead, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. Jesus said on earth, “I am the way, truth and the life, no man cometh to the Father but by me.” (John 14:6).

Receive the Son to Know the FatherHow Does This Relate to Us? Would Not St. Patrick Try to Get You to Come to God Through His Son? Very, very much so because our eternal destinies are determined by the acceptance or rejection of the Word of God. Jesus, the eternal Son of the Fa

Whatever method Kettle Moraine wasapplying to slow the tempo of Germantowndidn’t work in their 46-29 loss, March 7, inthe Division 1 regional final atGermantown.

The Warhawks are used to opponentschanging the pace of the game becausethey can’t keep up. The three-time statechamps have shown in the past that theycan play at any pace necessary to win.

“Teams have done that to us beforethrough the years,” Germantown coachSteve Showalter said. “Not so much thisyear because we’re not as quick. When wehad quicker teams in the past, we don’t letteams (hold the ball) because we can getout and get steals on those plays.

“(Kettle Moraine) were able to controlthe ball. They were as quick or quicker thanus. If they didn’t want to shoot, they weren’tgoing to shoot until they had a wide openshot. I think that (KM coach Brad Bestor)wanted to keep it close. He was just contentto keep it close as long as he could. Luckilywe got a lead, and it’s easier to play thatkind of game when you’re up by four or sixthan when you’re down by 10. Luckily we

controlled the game.”It was a low-scoring first quarter by

Germantown standards, and creatingturnovers on offense early in the game did-n’t help either. The Warhawks led 12-8after one period.

Germantown broke a close game openin the second quarter by hitting three, three-point shots, with back-to-back conversionsby senior guard Dwayne Lawhorn Jr. andone by senior guard Brian Studer. Lawhorn

scored eight of Germantown’s 11 points inthe quarter. The Warhawks closed out thehalf on a 5-0 run to lead at the half 23-15.

“We tried to get out and get steals,”Showalter said. “We weren’t very goodoffensively in the first half either. We turnedthem over a few times and we played pret-ty good defense. We made way too manymistakes in the first half. We held them to 15points. We should’ve had a better lead thanthat. They created (slowing the pacedown), that wasn’t me.”

Kettle Moraine (17-7) scored the first sixpoints of the second half to cut theGermantown lead to 23-21. Junior guard

Juwan McCloud, the off ensi ve scor ingmachine, struggled in the first half and did-n’t score. His five points and senior forwardKyle Theis’ basket was part of a 7-0 run forthe Warhawks that increased the lead to30-21 late in the third quarter. The Lasersgot a three-pointer from senior guardGeorge Schwartz to trail 30-24 enteringthe final period.

“I just think we adjusted (to KM),”Showalter said. “We’re telling (our players)all the time that you have to take the driveaway first. They just spread us out so farand they were able to beat us off the drib-ble. Of course, we don’t want that to hap-

pen. And then we weren’t scoring on theother end, so it made it all the more glar-ing.”

The Warhawks’ 9-2 run in the fourthquarter gave them a 39-26 lead, theirbiggest of the game. Germantownoutscored Kettle Moraine 16-7 in the finalperiod of regulation, in part because theLasers stopped being aggressive onoffense. Their last basket of the game, athree by sophomore guard Ben Psicihulis,

ended the scoring for Kettle Moraine. Theydidn’t score the last 4 minutes 17 secondsof the game.

Studer led the Warhawks with 13points, one of three players in double fig-ures. McCloud had 12 and Lawhorn added10. Germantown will take their 24-0 record

into the sectional semifinals, TMarch 12, at Whitefish Bay, againShore Conference foe Homestead

“This may be a situa-tion where the experi-ence of last year helpedus right away. I thoughtwe came out and playedreal well from the begin-ning and we were able tojump on them early andgive ourselves a cush-ion,” Kettle MoraineLutheran Coach Jason Walz said afterward.

Kettle Moraine Lutheran jumped out to a10-0 lead by the 1:34 mark of the first quar-ter on two baskets by Mikayla Voigt, one bas-ket each by Kari Schneiss and Sydney Rossowand two free throws by Alyssa Shipley.Waupun scored six of the next 10 points totrail 14-6 after the first quarter.

A seven point run by Waupun reducedthe Chargers lead to 20-17 with 1:46 leftbefore halftime but Kettle Moraine Lutheranresponded by scoring the next six points totake a 26-17 halftime lead.

An eight point run midway through thethird quarter gave the Chargers a 39-21 leadfollowing a layup by Payton Schneider. TheChargers then held on to a double-digit leaduntil less than a minute remaining to secure a

Both Mikayla and Kari hsuch a wonderful job not only this every year they’ve been on our varsisaid. “But this year this is their teatheir time to lead and go. They’re who said we’re not going to be detook over the game.”

Walz said his team did a goomoving the ball around even as Wdefense focused on stopping Voigt.

    Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

The partials I have had since December have beenadjusted and fit good but make my mouth just feel souncomfortable some days. The tops make my mouth feelreally full and bulky even though they don’t hurt. I havebeen a lot happier since I got partials as now I am able tosmile and my lips look fuller so my face doesn’t seem todroop. I am in advertising so having nice teeth and talkingproperly is extremely important to me. I want otheralternatives to just regular partials. I'm missing almost allback teeth except for two, so I have upper and lower partials

currently with the clear clips. Lastly, can you tell me if insurance will pay for this?Dear Lisa, I am glad you received partials and are

adapting to them! I refer to partial dentures and dentures astemporaries in my practice. That is because I want everypatient to have stable teeth, which ideally stay in yourmouth and don’t have to be removed at night. While noteveryone is a candidate for fixed implant dentistry itcertainly is a great goal.

When people wear partials-even comfortable partials-many things happen. First you lose bone where your backteeth were pulled. The lack of roots in the bone cause thebone to deteriorate and the movement of the partials adds tobone loss. Next, you get expansion of the maxillary sinuses. This is because the roots of the back teeth hold the sinusesup and when the teeth are removed the sinuses expand in aprocess called pneumatization. Lastly, the clasps of partialsmove when you chew on the false teeth. This movement isaccentuated on the clasped teeth which often become loseand need to be removed at a later date.

So the solution is to have dental implants and fixedbridges. If you have bone loss or the sinuses have expanded

you may require sinus lifts and or bone grafting prior toplacement of implants. Placing implants will stimulate andpreserve bone. Loss of teeth and rubbing on your skin bypartials cause bone loss. So our goal in dentistry is topreserve bone at all costs! So placing implants before toomuch bone loss has occurred will greatly preserve youroptions as you age. I lecture to other dentists aboutUpgradeable Dentistry, which allows people to go fromdentures to implant supported dentures or even implantsupported bridges as their budget allows. So even thoughinsurance doesn’t cover this level of complex dentistry we

offer interest free financing to help you achievthat will preserve your bone and your options tyour life according to your budget.

Wearing partials is a great first step towardyour mouth. Moving on to the next step beforirreversible bone loss is the next step in yo journey and we would be honored to help you next level of care to improve your smile, youand your self-esteem.

More than half of the students inGermantown School District elementaryschools have opted out of the BadgerExams.

The tests are administered to studentsstatewide in grades 3 to 8. TheGermantown School Board approved arequest Feb. 23 to create a special notice toparents informing them that they can opttheir children out of the tests.

“We are required to provide the tests, but parents have the ability to opt out,”Superintendent Jeff Holmes said at the Feb.23 meeting.

District officials have cited the use of atraditional test style and time taken upadministering the tests in computer labs asreasons they were opposed to the test.District officials also questioned if the statewould continue to fund the tests or if theywould rely on local school districts to comeup with their own data in the future.

According to information obtained afterthe March 9 School Board meeting, 1,022

students at the four elementary schools andKennedy Middle School — 59 percent ofstudents — have opted out of the BadgerExams.

The tests are to be given statewidebetween March 30 to May 22. Holmesadded that more students could opt out ofthe test prior to the exam being adminis-tered. Holmes said that Germantown wouldadminister the test after students return from

spring break, which will be from April 3-10.In a question and answer document on

the district website, district officials statedthat tests other than the Badger Exams areused by the district measure progress.

“We also use local assessments tomeasure how are students are progressing. The Germantown School District has a rep-utation for high academic achievement, andour commitment to high quality instructionwill continue. We are striving to find betterways of articulating academic progressmade in Germantown School District,” thedistrict stated. “We already know that we

do well in the areas of reading andcompared to the State and others; hthere is much more to a school dismath and reading scores."

District officials also stated theExam will not be used for course pldecisions.

“The district does not plan to data from Badger 3-8 or DLM (Learning Maps) to make decision

students. We don't know enough adata from the Badger 3-8 to chatypes of data we use to make detions, about students, especiallydeterminations, MAP results are onpoint for course placement, along InView testing happening in Marchtrict stated. “These will continue to until we can determine a process thn't rely on this information or an alteof criteria is established.”

The owner of the Von Rothenburg BierStube and Old Town Inn announced lastweek that he was withdrawing a proposalfor a recreational area just south of the twobusinesses.

“I am backing out of the Old Town parkproject,” Chaz Hastings told theGermantown Plan Commission March 9. “Itreally hurts me to do this because I’ve spentmoney on this and I felt we were looking a

project that was going to be great for thecommunity, truly revitalize Main Street, bring new business in and really giveGermantown something to be proud of.”

The park proposal submitted byHastings included a pavilion and two sur-rounding cabanas for vending, a children'splay area and space for 200 parking spots. It was the subject of a Jan. 26 workshopwhere concepts related to the overall devel-opment of the Main Street area weredescribed.

During the March 9 Plan Commissionmeeting, Hastings said he was planning onspending $1 million on the project.

“I can’t do that when I feel I’m beingasked to do things right out of the gate thatI just don’t understand and seem to make no

sense,” Hastings said.Hastings said Village President Dean

Wolter and Trustee David Baum “both hadmy back and really wanted to see this hap-pen.”

Hastings and asked the village do some-thing to address parking issues on MainStreet. He noted that he recently had his first

anniversary party and he knew he ness because potential customers find a place to park.

“And I think Main Street wbecome revitalized until the parkinaddressed, which unfortunatelyadding 200 spots, and I feel thahave fixed it,” Hastings said. “So abowing out on this one.”

In response to the announWolter said he appreciated the teffort Hastings put into the proposa

“Hopefully it can be reconsiderfuture and it’s not a totally dead ispassed and gone and perhaps reconsider it at another time,” Wolt

An item on the commission included discussion of taking steps

op a master plan for the area. Whiument was prepared for the commreview, no formal action was takewill be on the agenda for the nextsion meeting.
