B Y THOMAS J. MCKILLEN

MANAGING EDITOR

The coordinator of the PersonalizedLearning program in the GermantownSchool District explained how the initiativehas evolved over the past year.

"Personalized learning is being encour-aged to use both traditional and moderntools for solving problems or accomplishing

a goal," Personalized Learning CoordinatorScott Oftedahl said in a video that was pre-sented during the Aug. 25 GermantownSchool Board meeting. "Personalizedlearning encourages students to teach, teachers to learn and prepares everyone tolead when they have something to con-tribute."

In the video, he added that personal-ized learning uses both district and out ofdistrict resources. He said he will visit class-rooms to encourage teachers to developmore opportunities for student-centeredlearning. He said he works with librarymedia specialists, teachers and learningspecialists to promote online safety, produc-tivity "and the ethical use of pictures, musicand other intellectual property. They willwork together with staff to identify the bestway to know what students are learning

and growing."Oftedahl moved into the role after first

coming to the district as a technology inte-

gration specialist. His new role will keep thetechnology integration component of hisjob while adding responsibilities for the dis-trict gifted and talented program

At the start of his presentation,Oftedahl said he was surprised when hewas asked by Superintendent Jeff Holmesand Director of Teaching and LearningBrenda O'Brien to expand into areas of gift-ed and talented instruction until they

explained what the observed in his workwith technology.Oftedahl noted that he previously

taught music prior to being selected for thepersonalized learning post. Oftedahlexplained how music instruction is compa-rable to the personalized learning process.

"It's a perfect training ground for it,"Oftedahl said of his music instruction back-ground. "You typically work with 50 to 70kids in a classroom, they play all differentinstruments, they're playing different musicat the same time. Some students go homeand practice, some don't. Some come inwith previous piano lessons, some don't. Allof those things mean you come into thehuge, diverse classroom in which you havea common goal. You have a performance, anywhere between two and four times ayear, and you need to work together and

combine the talents within the room to comeup with something that sounds very con-nected, very polished."

He also noted that he taught an engi-neering and design course to fourth andfifth grade students over the summer.Oftedahl said he had limited knowledge ofthe what the course would contain so heworked with another technology teacher tocome up with a way of teaching the designprocess to the students. That involved col-laborating with other people and findingways to solve problems, including overcom-

ing constraints such as time and money"You start trying things and keep stu-dents focused on what their outcome is, butthe idea is to try things, accept that they'regoing to fail on occasion and learn from themistakes," Oftedahl said.

Oftedahl added that not all aspects ofthe school day can fit into the model heused during the summer class.

PET OF THE WEEK Dreamboat has come a long way over the last few months here at WCHS.

She is a star student, gives excellent eye contact during training, and haslearned quite a few tricks! She now knows come, sit, down, easy, off, give kisses, leave it,and wait.Dreamboat has gained alot of restraint andpatience. Can you believe we can set a treat on her paw, give her theleave it and wait commands and she won't touch it or move until we say"ok"! What a good girl!!! Searching for a dreamer to sail away into the sunset with? Look no furtherthan our sweet Dreamboat! Dreamboat came into WCHS as a stray.Sh e is Miss Confident and settledin right away. She has been full of happy wiggles and slobbery kisses from day one! Dreamboat is anactive, young girl still full of puppy energy & antics.WCHS is looking for her new home to have children12 years and up ready and willing to help with training. Fun loving, playful Dreamboat has not quitemastered the art of keeping all four on the floor yet when greeting people so some basic mannerstraining will be needed. We all sure do love her spunky spirit, zest for life, and enthusiasm though!Dreamboat does get rather over stimulated and excitable when around other dogs. She does not knowhow to appropriately greet or play with other canines. With slow introductions over a period of time, she has made a couple of canine friends here at WCHS. Dreamboat does need to be your one and onlyfour legged companion in the home. Cats are a definite no go.A good kitty chase and pounce is justfar too exciting to resist! Hurry in to meet Dreamboat before this wonderful girl cruises off without you!!

Tip of the Week: When approaching a new dog (especially one who is shy), crouch down low, turn your body sideways, don’t stare directlyinto their eyes, offer out your hand for sniffing, and speak in a quiet, soothing voice. Stay put and let them come to you. Once the dog licksyour hand or solicits petting, scratch under their chin rather than on top of their head. License Number #266935-DS

GERMANTOWN POLICE BLOTTER

Washington County is currently examin-ing a possible ordinance that would limitthe use of the Richfield Park and Ride lot.

The lot is located at 2464 RichfieldParkway and was constructed in the fall of2011. It is primaril y used by the WashingtonCounty Commuter Express (WCCE) andother commuters along Hwy. 41, accordingto an Aug. 22 memo from county HighwayCommissioner Tom Wondra to theTransportation Committee.

"At the time of construction, no ordi-nance was adopted by the WashingtonCounty Board of Supervisors to adopt

acceptable uses of the Richfield Park & Rideinto the County Code. As such, there arecurrently no restrictions on the use of thisparking facility," Wondra stated in thememo.

Wondra stated that without an ordi-nance updating the county code, "there isno 'abandoned vehicle' definition. A vehicleor detached trailer would be allowed topark at the Richfield Park & Ride Lot indefi-nitely."

Wondra stated in the memo that regula-tions for most state Department ofTransportation park and ride lots limit park-

ing to 48 hours, which could be adjustedfor the county site.

Wondra further stated that the park andride lot is not suitable for heavy trucks, andrecommended that parking of vehicles over8,000 pounds be restricted.

The proposed ordinance will be dis-cussed at the Sept. 2 TransportationCommittee, which will held at the countyvehicle maintenance storage facility at 8a.m.

Drs. Richard and Bruce Winte

Dear Dr. Winter, I have a slight under-bite,otherwise, my teeth are actually quite straight.I had braces on my top teeth at a young ageand as I grew up my under-bite worsened. Thisunder-bite has resulted in some unnatural wearand chipping on a couple of my top teeth. Doyou have any non-surgery solutions available?

Dear Ted, there are many options for fixingunderbites that are non-surgical but I cannot

comment on your options until I havecompleted an examination and x-ray visit.Sometimes orthodontics can correct yourproblem other times crowns can be used tochange your bite. So surgery is always the lastoption considered. It is important toremember that once significant wear andchipping has occurred, the teeth that causedthis chipping also need to be corrected torecover the space that was lost from these teetherupting in to the chipped areas.

Dear Dr. Winter, I had a tooth break at thegumline. I really don’t want a bridge as I haveheard they have to shave down the other teethand those teeth will be weakened. I am alsoconcerned that I might need bone grafting tohave an implant. What is your opinion aboutplacing implants the same day the tooth comesout? Can this help me avoid a bone graft?

Dear John, the ability to place an implant the

day the tooth is removed is dependent onseveral factors. First the remaining boneshould be intact and thicker than 1.5 mm sothat there is good blood supply to fill in thegap between the implant and the remainingtooth socket. Next there should be goodstabilization of the implant and if it can not beplaced with good insertion torque, it may bebetter to graft the socket and come back in 3months to place the implant after bone fill hasoccurred. The literature supports both means

of placing implants but it is still deupon clinician skill, bone quality and and cosmetic expectations of the pati
