• A conjunction joins words or groups of words

• Three Types:– Coordinating Conjunctions– Correlative Conjunctions– Subordinating Conjunctions

Correlative Conjunctions

• conjunctions used in pairs• Common Correlative Conjunctions:

– either…or– neither…nor– both…and– not only…but also

• Examples:– Either the principal or the teacher will

listen to your concern.– Both the brother and the sister

enjoyed the family reunion.

Subordinating Conjunctions

• Introduces a subordinate clause (a clause that cannot stand alone)

• We will talk more about these when we learn about clauses

Interjections

• An interjection is a word that expresses emotion and has no grammatical relation to other words in the sentence

– Interjections that show strong emotion are followed by an exclamation point.

– Interjections that show mild emotion are followed by a comma.

• Common Interjections:– Well– Ouch– Wow– Oh

• Examples:– Well, I just don’t know.– Ouch! That hurt!

• On a separate sheet of paper, please rewrite the following sentences. Number your paper 1-13 and identify every conjunction and its particular type. Extra credit if you can identify the interjection. The number in parenthesis tells you how many conjunctions are in that sentence.
