Electricity Costs Increase• Old infrastructure• Increased electric demand • Power factor tariffs in some markets are

increasing costs from a few per cent to over 35%

• Related power quality costs are rising – Utilities’ fuel and operating costs– Reduced performance from power distortions– Repairs and replacement

• to sensitive electronics• to motors components and drives• related lost productivity

Energy Saving IssuesHow MUCH ENERGY is

AVAILABLE to be Utilized Better• The typical office environment can attribute 40% of its

energy load to HVAC alone.• The U.S.’s spends 50-65% of its energy on motor loads.Partial short-list of GESPER’s energy saving contributions

What is a Power Quality Problem?

“Any occurrence manifested in voltage, current, or frequency deviations that results in failure or mis-operation of end-use equipment.” From a Dranetz-BMI Power Quality Seminar

Page 8: Gesper Energy in tune power management

Power Quality Problems

Events and Conditions; Associated Corrective TechnologySome devices may not perform well on the specified PQ event.

Blue - Best devices are well suited

Grey - Wide variety in performance.

White - Not suited to attenuate this event

Some devices can exacerbate the specified event or power quality condition

Prior to selecting any specific device a site-specific survey must be performed with power quality analyzers suited for qualifying the events in question.

Each device must be researched for its capacity to treat each specific PQ event.

Harmonics in Power Quality

Harmonics are un-useful frequencies of energy you pay for which;

• Apply reverse torque to motors

• Provide no motor force• Disrupt electronic

performance• Overheat components

and neutral conductors; damaging motors, electronics, circuit breakers, transformers

The 5th Harmonic

Six-pulse Drives; 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19....

Power Quality IssuesExcellent topics from expert third party sourceshttp://www.memagazine.org/mepower01/5thharm/5thharm.html (Mechanical Engineering Magazine)“The 5th Harmonic” discusses the lost energy of the 3 “basic” harmonics and the REVERSE TORQUE

applied by the 5th , 11th, 17th… harmonics"Ask any motor person in the world what happens when you run a motor on the fifth harmonic,"

said Isaiah Cox, CEO of Chorus. "They will tell you it runs in reverse at five times the speed. It is gospel.“

Power Factor Correction and Harmonic Resonance: A Volatile MixElectrical Construction & Maintenance, Jun 1, 2003

“Capacitors may be meant to correct problems, but they can also introduce them if incorrectly specified.

Industrial and commercial customers constantly scrutinize their monthly electric usage looking for ways to save money. Installing power factor correction capacitors can reduce costly penalties imposed by the utility …

However, you can't indiscriminately add power factor correction capacitors to a system without understanding how their presence will affect the system. Variable frequency drives (VFDs) for motors, DC power supplies for computers, electronic ballasts for fluorescent lighting, and other nonlinear loads can create harmonics. If you don't consider the existence of these harmonic sources and the inductive reactance of the existing system, you'll create the potential for harmonic resonance…

Sidebar: A Self-Correcting Problem? Harmonic resonance is said to be a self-correcting problem. Most times capacitor fuses will open, capacitor cans will fail, or the source transformer fails. Any of these events will lead to the removal of a component from the system, eliminating the resonance condition. However, they're all undesirable results. In a best-case scenario, the electrical control equipment acts erratically.”

Power Quality IssuesApplying Power Factor Correction in a Harmonic Environment

The use of capacitors has long been accepted as the most practical solution to low power factor problems in power systems. Modern capacitors are a reliable, maintenance free, inexpensive source of VAR's needed in inductive circuits to synchronize the voltage and current waveforms. In the past, the application of capacitors was straightforward; all that was required was a knowledge of KW (or KVA), existing power factor and target power factor. In recent years, however, this practice has been complicated by the proliferation of nonlinear loads. The Source of the Problem: One of the most widely used solid state motor controls is the six-pulse drive. These devices represent a non-linear impedance to the power source, drawing a quasi-square wave alternating current rich in harmonics. For six-pulse drives, the characteristic harmonics are: 5, 7, 11, 13, 17, 19....

Power Factor• Power Factor is one efficiency measurement of

electric power as it is – a) transmitted over power lines and – b) “processed” by end-use consumers.

• P.F. = f (voltage, current, time and phase angle)

• The closer the V-C relationship the more power can be transmitted over existing conductors.– Slightly below 1.0 (lagging)

is better than above 1.0 (leading)

Page 13: Gesper Energy in tune power management

Power Factor Reducers

• Common electric motors

• Motors running at lower than rated load

• Harmonic frequencies from electronics

• Transmission lines

Page 14: Gesper Energy in tune power management

Power Factor Tariffs• A simple formula increases end-user utility costs

to incent customers into improving power factor efficiency– Relates to the Utilities’ ability to move energy efficiently

• Utility companies’ power factor costs/savings are not noticed at the customers meters– Corrected Power Factor CAN increase current and kWh

Page 15: Gesper Energy in tune power management

Solutions• Tim Brazell has elected to employ the

GESPER family of Circuit Rider Marketing for an integrated power factor and power quality (availability) solution

• GESPER is a more diverse PQ solution than capacitors and has no known genuine competitors in either performance or customer assurances

• Power Factor can be stopped at Unity (1.0); among GESPER’s unique PQ contributors

Page 16: Gesper Energy in tune power management

Energy Audit

• Business needs analysis • Survey to identify energy “hogs”,

distortions and simple faults• Recommend energy-saving actions

– Improve infrastructure– Install energy-saving devices– Optimize performance

• Improve safety and reduce maintenance
