GET INVOLVED, GET NOTICED, GET AHEAD!

Welcome to the last Eblast Newsletter of 2015! What an incredible year it has been! The Heart of Illinois

Human Resource Council #326 is pleased to announce that on November 19, 2015 at a Volunteer Leader

Summit in Washington, D.C., our chapter won another Pinnacle Award!

This is an incredible honor for our chapter and the second one we have received in the past four years!

This award was for the work we have done with the Salvation Army, Partners for Good and the Veteran’s

Event we held in May.

The winning chapters were presented with a trophy and a $1,000 check for our chapter! Here is an

excerpt from the Pinnacle Award Program: ‘The Heart of Illinois HR Council was honored to collaborate

with the Heartland Division Salvation Army Veterans Outreach Center to host a special event aimed at

arming business leaders and HR professionals with a strategy to create, implement and access a veteran

hiring program and raise awareness of the growing trend in veteran homelessness.

Background: Strategic Veterans Hiring Program: With more than one million military personnel expected

to transition to civilian life in the next few years, the job market will be flooded with candidates whose

experience is heavily military based. Unfortunately, veteran candidates are among some of the most

overlooked and misunderstood. They face many stigmas associated with military life. In addition, HR

professionals struggle to translate military experience into qualifications they need to fill open roles in

their organizations. Further, veteran candidates struggle to explain how what they experienced in the

military will help them do the job at hand.

The end result is frustrated companies that want to extend their hiring to veteran candidates but cannot

seem to find what they need for the business and frustrated veteran candidates who know they have the

qualifications but cannot seem to get their point across.

Veteran Homelessness: Each year, thousands of Americans transition from active duty military service to

veteran status. Though the reasons for this are varied, many veterans struggle to return to civilian life,

placing them at increased risk of experiencing homelessness. On any given night, nearly 50,000 veterans

are homeless. In 2009, our federal government acknowledged the growing problem of veteran

homelessness and proposed a solution. Then Department of Veteran’s Affairs (VA) Secretary Eric

Shinseki, in conjunction with President Barack Obama, established the goal of ending veteran

homelessness by the end of 2015. The end of the year is almost over, so how are we doing? Since 2009,

nationwide veteran homelessness has decreased by 33%.

Largely responsible for this reduction is the surge of funding, programs and resources available to assist

veterans experiencing homelessness.

Our Results: Sabrina Baker, PHR, SHRM-CP, HR Consultant and Social Recruiter at Acacia HR Solutions

presented “From Service Member to Supervisor,” which outlined the tools to create and implement a

veterans hiring strategy. Next, we learned through a panel discussion of programs aimed at combatting

veteran homelessness offered by the Salvation Army Outreach Center, Veterans Administration, Goodwill

and ESGR.’

So, what’s next? First a big thank you to Cathy Plouzek, SPHR, SHRM-SCP for putting this meeting

together. We will continue to focus on veterans hiring and expand on this event next November!

The SHRM Foundation is Shaping the Workforce as the leading funder of workforce research, a relevant,

high-impact and original research that advances the knowledge base of the profession and provides

IT’S TIME TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP OR JOIN!!!

Why should I join the Heart of Illinois Human Resources Council?

HR professionals get together monthly to network, gather information on how other local organizations

handle various HR situations, policies, etc. Who understands more about HR than another HR person?

Who is the Heart of Illinois Human Resources Council (HIHRC)?

The Chapter began in 1948, under the leadership of H. Paul Hinds of the Hyster Company. At that time,

the organization was titled, ‘Central Illinois Employers’ Association Personnel Club.’

The HIHRC has approximately 100 members in all areas of the human resources profession. Our

members are executives, administrators, managers, independent consultants, large departments,

departments of one and other strategic partners.

What is the Mission of the HIHRC?

To provide our members with the knowledge required to attain the highest standard of performance in

human resource management. Our objective is to bring together diverse industries to provide

professional development thorugh high quality, responsive programs, with opportunities for open

discussion.

As a SHRM member, am I automatically a member of the local chapter?

No. SHRM membership is separate from membership in your local chapter. Each chapter has its own

membership application process and dues structure. There are more than 575 locally affiliated chapters

for SHRM. They are autonomous entities in their operations and membership requirements. To become a

member of the Heart of IL HR Council you will need to apply directly to our chapter.

Okay, if I am a member of the HIHRC am I automatically a national SHRM member?

No, to join SHRM, please visit: www.shrm.org/join

When are the HIHRC meetings held?

Generally, they are held the second Wednesday of every month, most of the time at lunch, but

occasionally we have a breakfast meeting.

Page 9: GET INVOLVED, GET NOTICED, GET AHEAD!heartofillinois.shrm.org/sites/heartofillinois.shrm.org... · 2015-12-07 · GET INVOLVED, GET NOTICED, GET AHEAD! Welcome to the last Eblast

9

Why do I pay membership fees and then have to pay for the monthly meetings?

We are a not-for-profit chapter and have not raised our rates in several years. Membership covers the

basic expenses of running the chapter. We try to provide a pleasant environment for our meetings,

networking time and speakers. The money for lunches/breakfast meetings covers the speaker fees (if

any), travel expenses (if any), the rental of the room and the food. We do not profit from the meetings.

Our meetings also provide SHRM and HRCI credits for a very low cost.

What do I get out of my membership in the HIHRC?

There are multiple advantages to being a part of our chapter. For example:

Networking opportunities with other HR professionals

SHRM and HRCI credits at the monthly meetings

Top-notch, professional speakers on a variety of topics that you help select annually in a chapter

survey

Use of the chapter website and the ‘members only’ section at: http://heartofillinois.shrm.org

How much does it cost to join the HIHRC? When are dues paid?

New membership begins in January of every year. Dues are currently $75 for SHRM National members

and $100 for members who are not national SHRM members. We have not raised our prices in many

years.

You can also pre-pay for all of your meals during the year for $310 for National SHRM members and $335

for local members. Another person can attend in your place if you are not able to.
