When my students use the tools that I teach, they up level their relationship with time, andthey create a more balanced and abundant, meaningful and whole-hearted life.

A Life By Design!!

We know that technically we can't create more time, after all, we all have a limitto 24 hours before the day starts over. What we can do though, is live a life on purpose, by design, with intention andcreate the results that we want instead of just taking what we get. When we live on purpose, we cause the effect instead of living at the cause andeffect of what life throws at us. The relationship that we have with time determines how much we value time. Our relationship with time determines how we spend our time or invest our time. When we don't value time, just like money, we are not a good steward of the timewe have. When we don't value time, just like with money, it slips through our fingers. When we don't value you time, just like money, we spend it and have nothing toshow.

One of the most rewarding parts of being acoach is helping my students create a betterway to organize their time.

What is Time?

The most valuable asset we have is time. It’s the one thing we literally can’t get more of. But there is a way to manage it so you can create more within the time you dohave. Time is a mental construct. It’s how we manage our mind around each day, week, month and year. I think most of us would agree that time is something we all want more of andgenerally, we feel like we are lacking enough. So, how do we get more of something when it's limited to the same 24 hours inevery day? We first need to understand our relationship with time and evaluate what wedo with our time. When you think about time, what comes up for you? What are your initialthoughts about time?

Since time is our most valuable asset, it’s important that we understand what wecurrently use time for. How do you currently use up your time? I want you to take some time right now and write down how you used up your24 hours yesterday. It doesn’t matter if it was a work day or an off day. You had 24 hours, and you got to spend them. How did you spend them? Make a list below of everything you spent time on in the last 24 hours.

Now, when you consider how you spent your day, what are your thoughts abouthow you spent your time? List them here: If you could go back and redo this day and spend your time better, what wouldyou do differently, and why? The truth is, most of us don’t live our days deliberately. We live unconsciouslyand the day just slips away...

Now, consider that tomorrow is your last day. What would you spend your timedoing? Who would you be with? Be as detailed as possible. Really be in themoment of feeling like you only have 24 hours.

There’s so much to learn from comparing these two days. Most likely, we can’t live each day like it was our last, but most of us aren’t livingour current day like it’s the only life we have. We aren’t being as deliberate with each day as we could be. When we can put more quality time into our days, we can create a more fulfillinglife. We don't have to let time be the thing that adds stress to our day. Being more aware and deliberate with our time will create better quality time. The reason for this is that we can fill each moment with what we are wanting tocreate on purpose, instead of mindlessly “doing our time” in our life haphazardly. Imagine if you were willing to live each day of your life with even half as muchcare as you would live your last day of your life. Most of us don’t have the gift of knowing when our time will be up. It could be somuch sooner than we plan. So my suggestion is that we live with intention so we have no regret that wewasted any of it.

I don't mind admitting that I have not always been good with time. There were times that thoughts about not getting things done made me feel like Ididn't have enough time. I was overwhelmed, anxious and worried aboutdeadlines a lot. I was not in a good space with time...at one time. I started my "mind & timemanagement" journey over 25 years ago. I was tired of feeling overwhelmed, hated the frantic busy, busy, persona I saw inothers and suspected was growing in me. I wanted to stop putting off things untilthe last minute. I wanted to feel better about time.

I felt like I was always running behind, or gettingtoo close to deadlines for comfort and had toomany irons in the fire. I wanted to be productive and have free time.

I wanted time to unwind, time to regenerate and time to just be and I also wantedto get stuff done. I wanted to feel accomplished and recharged. I felt like weekends were just a race here to get this thing done, and then run overhere to get that thing done, and then oh ya, we said yes to this and that meanswe have to do this, and on, and on, and on. Before I knew it, the weekend was gone, there was no re-energizing going on,there was no reading, growing, learning, relaxing, or experiencing going on. I was barely keeping up. Keeping up with what? I had no idea.

I was overwhelmed!

Some of that probably sounds familiar! That's what started my quest for the answer to the problem...how can I get moredone in less time and enjoy some down time? The first thing that I had to do was to understand my relationship with time.

It's time to answer these questions for yourself! What are thoughts that you notice about time? How do you talk about time? Do you find yourself thinking or saying, there is never enough? What do you do with most of your time? Does it feel like and investment or an expense? Do you value your time and protect it? Do others honor your time or take your time? Do you wish you were doing something different with your time? When does time go by fast? When does time go slowly? What would you do if you could create more time?

How often do you think or say "I don't have enough time?" How do you feel when you are against a deadline? How do you feel when you have plenty of time? Once you really understand how you feel about time, it's time to take action, change behaviors and up-level your outcomes.

What do you want to do with your time? What don't you want to waste your time on any longer?

How do we use our mind to manage our time? First...really constrain commitments to other people. That is the first step inhonoring your time. Just because people ask, does not mean that we need to say yes! Not everyinvitation needs to be accepted. Learn how to gracefully and with integrity, say no thank you. It could be assimple as, "let me check my calendar, I will get back to you by..." or "I appreciatethe invitation, but I have a previous commitment." It's a response that is with integrity, honoring your time and it's a graceful decline. If this feels icky because of your "people-pleasing tendencies...be the people thatyou most want to please. I promise, you won't regret it and either will your people. Next...Write down all the things that you know you have going on for the year. Yep, the entire year! This could be work and personal...plan it all. Yes, thingschange from time to time but adjustments are super easy. This is not about being rigid, it's about making sure that you have time for theimportant things, the fun things and the fulfilling things. It's going to be time consuming the first time you do this but every time after itgets easier and you will see the payoff...more time! Write down the vacations, the holidays, the birthday's, the home projects, thework projects, the 5k's, the Church stuff... all the things that you know about.

Then...Write down any tasks that go along with all of the things that you list. If the thing has multiple steps in the process, write them down as a "to-do's". For example: meal plan, grocery shop, clean house, meal prep, clean up mightbe example of all the things to do for a birthday dinner. These all become to-do's Finally...schedule it all. Using a daily calendar with time in increments of 30minutes, pencil it in. Get the to-do on our schedule. Only allow so much time to complete the task. Most things don't take nearly aslong as we think they will, especially if we are prepared to focus. Put each to-do in a time slot on your calendar. Then...throw the TO-DO list away!!! Here is where the mind management comes in to play. When you get to the time that you are supposed to do the thing...your brain isgoing to resist. Don't let it. Do exactly what you have planned and on your calendar. Even if you do not feel like it. As you exercise that muscle of honoring your own time, it gets easier. It's going to be hard in the beginning, your brain is going to resist and argue withyou or sweet talk you out of it. Don't let it.

You might have to involve others and let them know about your new mind-timemanagement process. It will take some practice but this concept works for home and work. There are even phone apps that you can use to share calendars and your familycan be part of it. Make sure that your time is a priority when you are scheduling your to-do's. Schedule free time, workout time, relaxing time even time to do pop up things. Weekly Maintenance Once a week, I do this Sunday afternoon or evening, have a power hour where Ireview the week ahead and make any adjustments that need adjusted. Even though your brain may fight you in the beginning, over time, it will thankyou. Over time, time will not be the drama and stress it used to be. Over time, time will feel relaxing, you will stop dreading the to-do's that you did inthe past. Your thoughts about time will improve and your thoughts will create betterresults. Your relationship with time will improve over time if you apply the tools in thisworkbook. Time to get busy planning my friend!
