Welcome…Welcome to the Get Set for School™ Pre-K readiness curriculum. Fall is a time of transitions, especially for children who are entering a new learning environment away from home.

We have some great strategies and teaching tools to help children get used to their new classroom and get excited about learning and exploring. With Get Set for School, they will learn to listen, take turns, and cooperate with others. They will also develop oral language and vocabulary, recognize letters and numbers, and write their own names in capitals. Preview our activity booklets, a great resource for wonderful and engaging activities you can use to teach essential skills (see inside back cover for details).

We can’t wait to share what’s new for fall:

Mix & Make Shapes™ is our new math product that teaches geometry, spatial reasoning, and problem solving with versatile geometric pieces. Page 17.

Professional Development Workshops for Readiness & Writing and Literacy & Math prepare you to teach the core readiness skills that are the foundation for all learning. Pages 22-25.

Get StartedThe first letter of the alphabet is one of the most difficult. Often, children mistakenly start at the bottom. That’s why the pre-stroke page is so important. Demonstrate starting at the top where the alligators are. Put the crayon on the arrow, say, “Big line slides down. Stop.” Make noises like the alligator is eating the crayon stroke “chomp, chomp, chomp” as you’re making the strokes. Color the alligators. Use different crayons to make each stroke. This also gives practice with picking up and holding a crayon correctly.

Ask about ADo you know: A words? A names? A sounds? A months? Have you seen an alligator?

Begin to look and learnThis is the A page. Let’s find the As. (Point) Look. There’s an alligator. (Point) Alligator starts with A. Talk about: where alligators live, 1 tail, lots of teeth, 4 legs.

Color and draw Color the alligator green. What about adding water, a sun, rocks. (Demonstrate.)

Demonstrate tracing ALet’s write A. Put the crayon on the . Big line slides down. Jump back to the top. Big line slides down. Little line across.

ExtraCrawl on the floor like alligators. Make hand shadow alligator mouths.

Fun focusA is for apple. Sort apples by color and size.

Ask about the triangleHow many sides does the triangle have? How many points/angles do you see? Begin to look and learnA triangle can be a hat.A triangle can be a dress. A triangle can be a volcano. What else could a triangle be? (ice cream cone, warning sign, tree, etc.)

ColorColor the triangle and pictures.

Demonstrate for tracing and copyingWatch me draw a triangle.1. Big line slides down.2. Big line goes across.3. Big line slides up to the top. Children trace and copy the triangles. They turn the last triangles into pictures.

ExtraPlay My Teacher Draws song, Track 17, from the Get Set for School Sing Along CD.

Shape Page – TRIANGLE AND DIAMOND

Ask about the diamondHow many sides does the diamond have? How many points/angles does it have? Begin to look and learnA diamond can be a kite.A diamond can be a face/hat for an elf. A diamond can be a road sign.

ColorColor the diamond and pictures.

Demonstrate for tracing and copyingWatch me make a big diamond in the air. Follow me as I make the diamond1. Big line slides down to the side.2. Big line slides down to the bottom.3. Big line slides up to the side.4. Big line slides up to the top. Watch me write a diamond (same way) Children trace and copy the diamonds. They turn the last triangles into pictures.

ExtraPlay My Teacher Draws song, Track 17, from the Get Set for School Sing Along CD.

Developmentally, the triangle and diamond come after the circle and square. Motor experiences with slides, ramps, cones, and funnels make diagonal lines and these shapes easier for children.

Describe Problem and SolutionChildren understand that when they have a problem, they want to work it out. When they find a solution, they feel better. Many stories contain some type of problem for the characters to solve. Children learn that just as they feel better when their problems are solved, stories feel completewhen the character’s problem is solved.
