In West Sussex that is about 1, 400 people who die from smoking annually

Smoking is the number one preventable cause of death in the UK

Smoking prevalence in adults in West Sussex

1 in 5 residents aged 18 and over smoke in West Sussex. That is about 125,000 people

Routine and manual workers represent the highest number of smokers in West Sussex That is 29.7% of the number of smokers in West Sussex, about 37,420 people

22% of residents of West Sussex (16-74) are in routine or semi-routine occupations

Some wards in Arun, Crawley and Worthing have an estimated smoking prevalence of above 30%

Census data, 2011, would suggest there are just over 16,500 smokers in the BME groups in West Sussex

Illicit tobacco in West Sussex

A total of 2,068 packets of cigarettes and 494 pouches of tobacco were seized over a 6 month period in 2013/14. The estimated value of these seized products is £13,000

Since April 1st 2012, Trading Standards have used 15 and 16 year old volunteers to attempt to purchase cigarettes at 62 premises. Of these, eight premises sold to the volunteers, which is a failure rate of 13%. This is close to the national figure of 12%

About 10% of mothers are smoking at the time of delivery (birth). Smoking during pregnancy causes premature births and increases the risk of long term conditions for the baby including learning disabilities

Young people and smoking in West Sussex

About 10% of girls and 8% of boys aged 14-15 years old are regular smokers

Of the current smokers, over 70% had their first cigarette between the ages of 12 and 13

Young people who have a parent who smoked are over four times more likely to smoke regularly themselves as those who had non smoking parents.

The earlier a young person takes up smoking, the more likely they are to remain as regular smokers as adults. Of the eight year olds taking up smoking, 50% are thought to remain as regular smokers. This compares to 28% of 13 year olds remaining regular smokers as adults.
