Identity theft is the fastest growing crime in the U.S. Approximately nine million Americans have their identities stolen each year.* Identity theft occurs when someone obtains your personal information — such as your Social Security Number — and illegally uses it to open accounts or initiate transactions in your name. This can cause financial loss and damage to your credit.

Identity theft can occur in many ways — through theft of wallets and purses, as a result of stolen mail, over the phone or online when someone obtains your confidential information.

Free transaction monitoringWe monitor your BMO Harris credit card, ATM and debit card accounts on a daily basis and will contact you if unusual transaction activity is detected. Additionally, if your card is affected by unauthorized purchases, we’ll close your current account and issue you a new card immediately for your protection against fraud.

What to do if you suspect identity theft

If you suspect that someone has gained access to important personal information, be sure to take the following precautionary steps to protect your accounts. Also keep a record of each call you make, the person you spoke with and any follow-up action(s) you need to take.

• Visit a BMO Harris branch or call us at 1-888-340-2265. We’ll close any impacted accounts and place a fraud alert on your records.

• Contact one of the major credit bureaus. Request that a fraud alert be placed on your file and ask for a free copy of your credit report.

• Order a new copy of your credit report in three months. A small fee may apply. Verify all corrections and review for suspicious activity.

• Contact any other banks or creditors and send a follow-up letter to each.

• File a police report and retain a copy for your records.

• File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Call toll-free: 1-877-ID THEFT (1-877-438-4338).

• Complete an Identity Theft Affidavit when disputing any new unauthorized accounts. Visit consumer.gov/idtheft to learn more.
