An idea is born
While working on a project for Mobil Oil, Douglas Sharratt, founder and President of ProSoft Technology, discovered that the Allen-Bradley® PLC processors he was using needed a way to communicate with a SCADA host via the Modbus protocol. After some commercial discussions with Allen-Bradley and after
Who we are...receiving the necessary technology, he went to his garage and developed an EPROM (Erasable Programmable Read-only Memory) based solution for the 1771-DB (PLC-5 BASIC) module that allowed the PLC-5 platform to communicate via Modbus. The end result: The first Modbus Slave Communication Module for the PLC-5 platform was born.
And Then There was ProSoft Technology!
That single chip led to a partnership with Allen-Bradley and in 1990 ProSoft Technology was formally incorporated.
Opening Doors
By 1993 ProSoft Technology had evolved from a company with a good product to an all around solution provider, with a growing protocol library.
New Office for Europe-Middle East-Africa Region
In 1997 a ProSoft Technology office was opened in France, with Alain Chevalin joining the team as the Sales Manager for Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Extending the Global Reach
In 1999 Lenus Hong was hired as the Sales Manager for the Asia-Pacific region and ProSoft opened an office in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the same time, Franco Melchiorre was added as the Sales Manager for the Latin American Region.
Wireless is More…
In 2003 the first of what would become a broad array of wireless technologies is launched to the marketplace. In 2004 ProSoft acquired the wireless engineering company Locus, Inc.
Schneider Electric
Also in 2003, the ProTalk line of in-rack interface solutions for the Schneider Electric Quantum platform were introduced. ProSoft became a member of Schneider’s Collaborative Automation Partner Program (CAPP).

For this white minerals extraction, the customer was already using the Quantum platform and the PROFIBUS network. The goal was to migrate from Concept to the UnityPro XL environment and from PROFIBUS V0 to V1 protocol. Among his 60 field devices, some are using Profibus PA and ASI protocol (analog parameters). The customer wanted to implement FDT-DTM for the management of these different types of assets. As he said, the benefits of this technology is that he could manage the configuration and maintenance of his field device with one single tool, without using external gateways, and at any time from the control room. The customer also said he appreciated the new integration of his whole system, which results in improvement and ease of use. The technical support he got from ProSoft Technology, from project study to commissioning was also a very positive point.

Water in IraqIn Badaah, Iraq, David Watts has put finishing touches to the largest water treatment facility in Southern Iraq, the Nasiriyah Plant, which supplies 10,000 cubic meters per hour of fresh drinking water to approximately three million Iraqis.
A Quantum PLC, which has 20 Remote I/O drops, was used to control the backwash of 20 individual filters cells. Watts placed individual ControlLogix processors at the three pump stations along the Garaaf River, a small branch of the Tigris River. The fourth ControlLogix was placed in the control room to function as a SCADA host for the plant.
“I had never used a ProSoft Technology interface module before,” said Watts, “And, of course there were no manuals or cables on location to help me with this, so I called ProSoft.”
ProSoft Technical Support Engineer, Scott Lee, answered the call and got him up and running.
“This new water facility rivals any state-of-the-art water treatment plant we have in the States,” said Watts. [Did You Know?]

In-rack flow computers cut costsIn the Brazilian rainforest’sUrucu province, four ProSoft Technology flow computers calculate flow volumes for 38 natural gas streams on their way to a Petrobras oil treatment plant. The gas is then transferred 12 km to an oil extraction plant where 16 flow computers calculate flow rates and gas volumes over the processor backplane.
“Complete automation of the test system without volume loss was only possible because of the ProSoft flow computers,” said Francisco Carlos Campana Aragon, Senior Equipment Engineer for Petrobras. “If we had chosen the classic model of EMEDs dedicated flow computers, 68 units would have been needed, with implementation costing an average of $40,000 each. The integration between the ProSoft flow computers were decisive factors in our success.”

In this mining application, a large moving excavator was used to extract stones and carry them to a conveyor to the factory. On board this excavator is a complete automation architecture. This moving automation system has to be controlled remotely from a control room.
Originally, the connection between the moving system and the control room used a cable, but degradation to the cable caused cable breakage almost once every week, creating an extremely unreliable communication network.
“Today, things have changed,” explained ProSoft Technology’s distributor. “We have put in place a wireless RadioLinx Ethernet network, which achieves a reliable 24 hours communication, with the possibility to exchange safety messages between the remote operator and the excavator’s worker.”

Many times, multiple networks are used in one facility, making it difficult to gather data from certain devices. ProSoft Technology’s stand-alone, DIN-rail mounted industrial gateways provide a means to extract or import data from devices using one protocol to another. These gateways are especially useful when there is no possibility of using a protocol interface module in a processor rack due to network or space constraints.
The practical advantages of using gateways include the ability to get information from other locations in the facility or supply chain, feed other systems with real-time data from manufacturing, and make manufacturing information more relevant and efficient. Gateways also connect older, serial-based communications or analog signals with newer networks.
ProSoft Technology offers a wide variety of connectivity options, from discrete industrial network solutions to process network technology, and open protocols to proprietary protocols, with its Communication Gateways.
For a complete list of supported networks, see our ProLinx Matrix at the back to this catalog.

ProSoft Joins the NavyIn 1998, the U.S. Navy needed to backfit its Minesweeper fleet. Although this class of ship is very small in size, it has a significantimportance to the United States Navy.
The 14 ships in this fleet were plagued with equipment that was no longer supported, making it difficult to obtain spare parts. Essentially, the new system is a LAN that provides control and monitoring of various shipboard systems—firemain, propulsion, auxiliary seawater cooling, lube oil, fuel oil, etc.—with the capability of taking on additional systems.
The new system has reduced scheduled maintenance, increased system and equipment awareness, increased data availability, reduced manpower requirements and equipment life cycle costs and increased performance and reliability.

[Did You Know?]In Kimberly Clark’s tissue mill, ProSoft’s Modbus Plus module helps control a conveyor system which directs product to the correct packaging station downstream.
ProLinx in Off-Shore Oil RigsProSoft’s EtherNet/IP to Modbus Gateway was used by Dave Swalwell, Senior Systems Engineer of Laing Limited, to communicate with an instrument described as a “density profiler.” Primarily this instrument is used on oil rigs and is mounted within retrieval vessels that hold the crude oil as it is pumped from the sea bed. The profiler gives an image of the contents, which can be oil, sand, water, emulsion, gas or foam, of the vessel according to their density.
“Our clients have repeatedly asked for Modbus, Modbus Plus and Profibus connections, hence the ProLinx modules are an ideal interface,” said Swalwell.

Communicating from the HARTWith plants located throughout North America, Valspar is the sixth largest paint and coatings company globally. For the integration, measurement, and control of their plants, Valspar trusts Meter Maintenance & Controls Inc. (MMCI). In each plant, MMCI uses 30-50 HART flow meters for the batching process. The challenge was in moving data from the meters to the controller. Royal Wholesale Electric recommended ProSoft’s EtherNet/IP-to-HART gateway.
“I’d been using ProSoft products for years…possibly since we first started as a company so it was a no brainer,” comments Terry Davis, President of MMCI. “Now we use the gateway in all the plants.”
Benefits include cost savings because plant operators do not require control system training to view critical information; and quality, because the measurement system’s accuracy is nearly flawless.
GREAT FOR: Users needing to connect HART field devices to a multitude of other networks. Choose between HART Analog for higher data speed, and HART Multi-drop for higher field device density per channel.

In Singapore, the Changi Water Reclamation Plant needed PROFIBUS DP communication between Schneider Electric and Siemens processors. Singapore’s Deep Tunnel Sewerage System, which brings the wastewater to the Changi Water Reclamation Plant for further clarification and bio-treatment, then sends it to their new water plant to produce clean water that is healthy and safe for direct consumption. The mega water treatment project has a long list of field devices in a wide-ranging PROFIBUS network that harbors thousands of different types of measuring instruments.

In his last interview, Founder of ProSoft Technology, Doug Sharratt, elaborated on ProSoft’s role in improving automation processes. “To put it simply, we make modules that act as translators allowing machines made by different manufacturers, speaking different languages to communicate. This allows manufacturers who may have older systems to be able to utilize newtechnologies. The fact is, the first INDUSTRIAL computer came out about 25 years ago. Think how much consumer technology has changed in the last 25 years...cell phones, flat screen TVs, digital cameras. Twenty five years ago most of us had never heard of Bill Gates. In manufacturing, the advances have been just as dramatic. Our products allow plants to bring in new processes and equipment without having to rip out older equipment that may
still be doing its job.”

“Normally every Atlas Copco compressor would be controlled individually,” said Chen Zong Liang, General Manager of Shanghai Yuandong. “With individual control we found that some compressors would load, unload, and even stop running simultaneously. This made compressor output very inconsistent and therefore unstable. By using ProSoft’s Modbus Module, we were able to directly connect the processor with Atlas Copco’s compressors using the Modbus protocol. With central control, it was possible to stagger the actions (start, load, unload or stop) of every compressor according to the charge situation.”

Wireless connectivity can open up a new realm of opportunities to improve operational efficiencies in a cost-effective manner.
Remote LocationsRemote locations are probably the most expensive applications in which to run cable. Because the cost is so prohibitive, in the past many companies have opted to gather needed data from remote sites by sending a technician or engineer out to the site on a regular basis. No more. Now it is possible to install radios for a fraction of the cost of wire or paying an engineer to drive long distances to read a meter.
Adverse Terrain and WeatherWith the advent of industrial radios, companies can now choose to install wireless in less than perfect conditions. Freezing temperatures, desert sand, salt water and rain are no match for hazardous rated and waterproof radios.
Mobile or Moving DevicesAnyone who has ever worked with moving equipment in a plant knows how many times production is shut down due to damaged festoon cables and the need to maintain slip rings. Replacing festoon cables and slip rings with wireless technology can increase your productivity, decrease your downtime and increase your profits.
SecurityOne of the most common objections engineers have to going wireless is the concern over security. “Will anyone be able to connect to my network? Is my data accessible to anyone close to my site? Will my production data be protected against hackers?” Security has come a long way since the first industrial wireless applications:
WPA2: Wi-Fi Protected Access with full implementation of the IEEE 802.11i security framework including AES-CCMP encryption and 802.1x/EAP authentication.
Why Wireless?
For applications with adverse terrain, weather, or hazardous location, ProSoft has the radios to fit your needs.
Replacing festoon cables and slip rings with wireless technology can increase your productivity, decrease your downtime and increase your profits.
Wireless is the most cost-effective way to communicate in remote applications.
FHSS: Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum: Regularly “hops” to different frequencies making it difficult to jam and the signals are not detectable by Wi-Fi devices. Encryption of the data with strong methods such as the Advanced Encryption System (AES) provides a second layer of protection.
According to The Online Industrial Ethernet Book, “While it is true that one could roam the streets, find an unprotected access point and attach to a wireless network, it is far different from actually gaining access to a company’s network resources. To date, we are not aware of a single reported ‘break in’ and theft of confidential files over a wireless access point with the proper security enabled.”

Select Radios and Accessories Like a Pro!
ProSoft Wireless Designer (PWD) simplifies the task of planning and specifying your ProSoft Wireless network.Theuser-friendly,wizard-basedinterfacecreates a visual layout of your radios and sites, and it generates a complete Bill of Materials including radios, cables, lightning protection, connectors, and antennas. When creating the site layout, PWD is able to validate wireless link feasibility based on path length and recommended accessories, and is able to predict signal strength based on distance, local regulations and hardware choices.
Design a Wireless Network
The PWD expert system asks overall network design questions to help select radio and automatically selected accessories including:
•Indoororoutdoorapplication
•Typeofconnectivityrequired(serialorEthernet)
•Throughputrequirement
•Installationcountry(forpowerandfrequencysettings)
Once the general network information is entered, each wireless site is added. If the GPS coordinates of the sites are known, they can be entered to calculate the length of the wireless path between sites. Then the sites are linked together as desired and PWD calculates the estimated signal quality based on a clear wireless path (free-space).
If the predicted signal quality is not as high as desired, the wireless accessories for each site can be modified (for example selecting higher gain antennas) or perhaps a repeater is added to make the wireless path feasible. The database of accessories includes connector types, RF gain or loss of accessory, and other information. Warnings are made if accessories are selected that will not connect or do not match the frequency of the radio.
Generate List of Wireless Components
Once all of the sites and paths are entered and accessory selection is final, ProSoft Wireless Designer provides a complete list of radios and accessories as well as a list for each site. The parts list can be exported as an Excel spreadsheet for quote or the PWD project file can be sent to ProSoft Technology for review.

[Did You Know?]Six RadioLinx FHE units work day and night next to an aluminum smelter in Australia that is so magnetic, mechanical watches get ruined and credit cards get wiped clean, but our six radios function just fine.
The power of industrial wireless in Cumberland…In Tennessee, the Clinton Utilities Board had to route data through thirteen electrical distribution substations, two of which were prone to outages and tucked within the Cumberland Mountains. For these sites, wireless made sense, so ProSoft Technology Frequency Hopping serial, Ethernet, and Ethernet with Serial Server radios were selected. ProSoft’s technical engineers also helped develop a path study that identified locations along mountaintops where repeaters could obtain the desired path.
Todd Loggins with Clinton comments, “Because of the rugged terrain in parts of our service area, installing a wireless network has proved to be a challenge. However, the benefits that have resulted from it have far outweighed the installation difficulties. We have been able to save numerous man-hours by being able to remotely monitor and control devices that normally would take us hours just to get to.”
Today, an additional 62 radios have been added to the original 23. “These products are all working great for us,” comments Loggins.

One man’s waste is another man’s treasureGranger Electric operates a landfill-gas-to-energy program in Pennsylvania that extracts methane from decomposing waste and supplies it to customers as an alternative “greenhouse” fuel.
Tyson Foods, a customer, uses the green energy to power boilers that keep its plant operating. To monitor flow and consumption variables, Granger installed three Ethernet PLC controllers and a hardwired phone line, connecting Granger’s facility to the plant. Wireless was chosen to connect the point where the phone line ends with each PLC in the large site. ProSoft Technology’s RLX-IHW-66 water/dust-tight 802.11abg Industrial Hotspot™ radios were selected.

GREAT FOR: Cellular connectivity to the highest speed wireless networks.
Intelligent Cellular
Typical Solution Ideal for Machine-to-machine communications, water/wastewater and oil and gas applications.
Wireless Technology
“The extended temperature range and the ATEX certification (of the ProSoft radio), as well as the high MTBF of the RadioLinx products were of course very important for our harsh environment, not to mention the ease of configuration. We wanted a maintenance operator, not being a radio specialist, to be able to make a replacement in a very short time, at any time of the day or night.”

ProSoft Wireless Protocol
Wireless Technology
What is PlantMesh?
PlantMesh is a quick and cost-effective way to migrate legacy devices to new control platforms such as Industrial Ethernet. PlantMesh is a technology providing users with more flexibility than ever before in wireless solutions. With PlantMesh, users can connect various field devices using different networks or protocols and share data between these devices “over-the-air.”
PWP makes PlantMesh possible
ProSoft Technology has developed an efficient and powerful wireless protocol called ProSoft Wireless Protocol or PWP. With PWP, network protocols are converted into common “radio packets” allowing messages to be transmitted to an 802.11 radio connected to the network. Data in PWP packets are in a binary format which augments the security of the wireless communications. PWP is a producer-consumer protocol that enables peer-to-peer data exchange between devices using one or more supported protocols with a PWP enabled wireless product at each device.
Which ProSoft wireless products can be used in a PlantMesh environment?
•All of the ProLinx Wireless Gatewaysincluding: Wireless Modbus, Modbus TCP/IP, ASCII, HART, PROFIBUS DP, and the EtherNet/IP to DF1 gateways
•In-chassis wireless modules including:Wireless PWP module for Schneider Electric Quantum PLCs
•The RLXIB-IHW Ethernet Hotspots alongwith the RLXIB-IHW-66 water resistant radios can also be used as repeaters with the PWP-enabled gateways and in-chassis modules

Municipal UtilityA local integration company was tasked to provide a reliable, low cost solution to connect several sites in a Midwestern utility company. The utility produces chilled water and steam which is then distributed throughout the downtown area. The original installation covered approximately one square mile. Since the use of wire and fiber required tunneling under streets or routing cable through skyways, the company decided to install wireless modems.
A combination of Emerson ROC flow computers and three RadioLinx wireless modems were installed to validate reliable operation in a variety of environmental extremes including snow storms, rain and ice. After a successful test it was confirmed that the wireless modems operated efficiently in the RF environment of a major metropolitan area and the extreme weather conditions. After this successful validation, the network of modems was expanded to cover a much larger geographic area.

HART in VenezuelaIn an effort to increase production and reduce costs, the Venezuelannational oil company PDVSA used a new interface module which will allow them to communicate between DF1 and HART protocols. Approximately 40 ProLinx HART Multi-drop (8 channel) Serial Port Gateways from ProSoft were installed in their crude oil production units in eastern Venezuela.
The ProLinx HART module allows up to 8 channels of multi-drop HART communications (support for up to 120 instruments such as Mass Flow Meters, Differential Pressure Transmitters, Absolute Pressure Transmitters and Temperature Transmitters). It also provides full access to the digital configuration, diagnostics and maintenance information in each connected transmitter.
