Free Sketch – 15–20 Min Emphasize it doesn’t need to be perfect Everyone sketches, including the designer Tell everyone 15 minutes; extend by 5 minutes

if people are still drawing Have plenty of paper easily accessible

Explain and Critique – 25-30 Min Before you start the critique, divide the time up among participants Ask for volunteers first, then call on people Everyone needs to present People will often riff off each other’s ideas; try to hold the group’s focus Designers go last Collect everything for reference later

Page 14: Get the whole team together and Design Jam

Remote design jam Allow for extra time for setup and technical issues Have a remote facilitator Find a room in each location that has web cams; it is important to see

people on the other end Each person presents to the camera Remote team scans in sketches for the designer

Page 15: Get the whole team together and Design Jam

Design with Components If people struggle with original ideas, create or purchase a set of reusable

components People can assemble a page from pre-designed components instead of

having to draw Limits creativity but may improve confidence in non-designers

Page 16: Get the whole team together and Design Jam

This sounds great, but …

Page 17: Get the whole team together and Design Jam

How do I get my team and users on board? Opportunity to shape the interface Group brainstorming on a problem; more heads are better than one Opportunity to interact with users of the software It is only an hour

Page 18: Get the whole team together and Design Jam

What if I have someone who dominates the conversation? Tell everyone how long they have to present their idea If one sketch is particularly interesting, table the conversation on it and

return if you have time Ask that person to let others speak As a last resort, leave them out of the next session

Page 19: Get the whole team together and Design Jam

What if I don’t have access to users? Can still be done with only the development team Make sure you have someone with a solid understanding of user needs Find a subject matter expert to review designs
