November 7 – December 19, 2014 Schedule

November 7, 2014 Australia (2008, Australia, directed by Baz Luhrmann, 165 min.) This is a big, ambitious, entertaining epic that tries to unite Western culture, aboriginal cul-ture, the mythic power of the Wizard of Oz story, a romance and the early years of World War II into one story. Hugh Jackman as Drover and Nicole Kidman as Lady Sarah Ashley who has inherited a cattle station in Northern Australia organize a cattle drive to the port of Darwin to sell the cattle to the army. The story, with all its twists and turns traversing beau-tiful, sweeping landscapes is narrated by Nullah (Brandon Walters), a part-white aboriginal boy who is very bright and who displays mythical powers that have been transmitted to him by his grandfather named King George (David Gulpilil). By the time they reach their desti-nation, Darwin is under attack by Japanese planes. Chaos ensues, but ultimately there is a happy ending for the main characters. This is not a realistic film, but it’s a good story, “the way they used to make movie.” Also with David Wenham (as Neil Fletcher), David Ngoombujarra (as Magarri), Bryan Brown (as King Carney), Ursula Yovich (as Daisy) and Lillian Combie (as Bandy Legs). (#368) November 21, 2014 Cyrano de Bergerac (1990, France, directed by Jean-Paul Rap-peneau, 138 min.) Edmond Rostand’s classic drama of inner and outer beauty is given a lavish treatment in this production. Gérard Depardieu portrays the title character, a brilliant, charismatic swordsman and a master at writing poetry. His one “flaw”: he believes the size of his nose will prevent him from ever winning the hand of a woman. He channels his love for the beautiful Roxane (Anne Brochet) into letters and speeches delivered by Christian de Neu-villlette (Vincent Perez) who has fallen in love with Roxane as well. The screenplay spins this love story in a web of court intrigue and scandal. Of special note is the fact that the English subtitles were written by renowned British author Anthony Burgess and parallel Rostand’s original sound and poetry. Also with Jacques Weber (as Count de Guiche), Ro-land Bertin (as Ragueneau) and Philippe Morier-Genoud (as Le Bret). (#369) December 5, 2014 Tales From the Golden Age (2009, Romania, directed by Hanno Höfer, Razvan Marculescu, Cristian Mungiu, Ioana Uricaru and Constantin Popescu, 141 min.) The final fifteen years of the Ceausescu regime were the worst in Romania’s history, but the propaganda machine of that time (ending in 1989) referred to the period as the coun-try’s “golden age.” This film is an anthology of six “urban legends” of Romanian life, re-capturing the mood of a nation trying to survive with wit under a brutal dictatorship when food was more important than money, freedom more important than love and survival more important than principles. One reviewer likened the film’s lyrical political satire to Gogol. Actors include Alexandru Potocean (Secretary), Teo Corban (Mayor), Emanuel Pirvu (Party Inspector), Avram Birau and Paul Dunca (Photographers), Diana Cavallioti (Crina), Radu Iacoban (Bughi) and others. (#370) December 19, 2014 Before Midnight (2013, U.S., directed by Richard Linklater, 109 min.) The sequel to Before Sunrise (1995) and Before Sunset (2004) brings us the same actors, Ethan Hawke as Jesse and Julie Delpy as Celine, after another nine-year interval. In their early forties, they are on vacation in Greece with their twin daughters. While there are ex-tended conversations just between the two main actors, they also are shown in scenes where they talk to younger and older couples, offering different views on love, marriage and ro-mance. In the earlier films, Jesse and Celine talked about their future, ambitions, fears and dreams. In this one they focus on mistakes of the past and present problems. Before Mid-night explores the complexities of modern love and life in an international setting (filmed in Greece) with smart and elegant dialog. Also with Seamus Davey-Fitzpatrick as Hank, Jennifer and Charlotte Prior as Ella and Nina, Xenia Kalogeropoulou as Natalia, Yiannis Papadopoulos as Achilleas and Athina Tsangari as Ariadni. (#371)

A memorial service for longtime I-House supporter Dor-othy Foytik, a weekly presence at Connections meet-ings for many years, will be held at the Davis Unitarian

Church on Friday, Nov. 14, at 2:30 p.m. Carpooling is recom-mended. "Dorothy was a fixture at our Connections meetings, but her service to international students and scholars and their wives started in the mid-1950s before I-House was even established," said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director. Dorothy was born in the Philippines on Nov. 12, 1916. Her father taught high school there until the family returned to Pas-adena when Dorothy was a baby. She grew up in Pasadena and later attended UC Berkeley where she met and married Jerry Foytik. They moved to Davis in the 1950s where Jerry taught agricultural economics at UCD. "Mom lived in Chile, Ethiopia and New Zealand," said daugh-ter Nancy. "She had many friends worldwide and liked to cook for foreign students particularly at the holidays. She was a great international cook." For the past many years, Dorothy welcomed international wives and enjoyed seeing her Davis friends at the weekly Con-nections gathering at I-House. "Connections was very im-portant to her," added Nancy. "It kept her young." Dorothy was Volunteer of the Year at I-House in 1998. Survivors include daughters Nancy Foytik and Jean Holz and son Carl Foytik. Dorothy died on Oct. 20, 2014. Memorial donations may be made to International House Davis at her request. ■

News in Brief

I-House supports UCD's

International Education Week I-House enthusiastically supports International Education Week Nov. 17-21, an annual event that takes place on campus and at I-House. At I-House, all language and movement classes will be free for that week, from tai chi in the morning to tango in the evening. I-House volunteers will be tabling at the International Fair by the Silo at the Student Community Center from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 18. An interactive map will be placed in the I-House Lounge for that week en-couraging visitors to leave notes about their inter-national experiences and hopes regarding interna-tional bucket lists. Spencer Cheung, the I-House volunteer coordinator, is offering international of-fices on campus free use of I-House flags for the week. Contact him at [email protected]. "This is a great way to bring more students to I-House," said Elisabeth Sherwin, executive director.

Africa Club meeting on Sunday, Nov. 16

All those interested in forming an Africa Club are invited to International House for a brunch potluck on Sunday, Nov. 16, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. No reservations are required, just come! There used to be a vibrant Africa Club in Davis but as so often happens the leadership moved on and now Davis has a cultural hole where the club used to be. I-House is not interested in directing the club, mere-ly in gathering people together who might want to create a club. Of course, we invite the club to hold its events at I-House!

Thanks to Brown Construction for all its work at I-House

Many thanks go to the workers and time donated by Brown Construction to put down a new floor in our kitchen, a new carpet on the stairs going to the basement, and two new floors in the downstairs bathrooms. Liz McCapes is our president and not coincidentally a VP at Brown. Many thanks. This old house needs all the love, upkeep and remodel-ing it can get.

Join two ace volunteers for a holiday cookie class

Natascha Starr and Eva Reeves -- our great volun-teers -- are offering a holiday cookie cooking class at I-House on Monday, Dec. 1 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. We know that Humphrey Fellow Umar Mehmood from Pakistan would like them to make the all-American favorite of chocolate chip cookies but we think they will do something a little more special for the holidays. The cost is $10. The menu? Russian tea cake cookies, tiny pecan pies, jam cookies, and German cookies. Sign up at I-House!

T he fourth annual International Festival hosted by International House came to Davis’ Central

Park on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014 and was the best festival yet thanks to all the supporters, volunteers and festi-val-goers. It also set a couple of firsts: this was the first time the festival was held outside in Central Park and on a Sunday. But it was still a free-admission par-ty celebrating “unity in diversity” with 10 music, song, and dance events on stage, 18 vibrant culture tables, 14 arts and crafts sales, 9 business tables, 9 nonprofit tables and myriad activities for children. As in years past, this was a free-admission festival and no alcohol was served. "This is a family event,” said Elisa-beth Sherwin, executive director of International House Davis. Culture tables represented China, U.S.A.,Germany, India, Italy, Israel,

Korea, Palestine, Philippines and Ven-ezuela, among others. Each culture table had an activity for children, too. "I was worried about parking in this

new venue," added Sherwin. "But thanks to our parking czars, Thomas Mahood and Mike Brown, and their volunteers, every-

thing went very smoothly." Some of the arts and crafts vendors on site were El Maya crafts from Guatemala, Shelly Hird Designs with Jesus Sosa from Mexico, Crucial Vibes Unlimited, Culture Collection African-American gifts, Kat’s Originals from Hawaii and the Arbuckle Fiber Co. selling knits and yarn. Malinke Imports from Africa was the first to arrive and the last to leave. Koen Van Rompay, the founder of Sahaya International, talked about his work as his volunteers held photos of the children Sa-haya helps in Southern India. “As in years past, the stage was alive with dancers, an international fashion show, drummers and musical groups,” Rompay said. International food choices included Open Rice Kitchen, Chickpeas and La Kora, a Mexican food truck. The I-House group Connections raised more than $650 at a fabulous bake sale run by Diane Winslow. Families and visitors were able to eat lunch at tables or picnic on the grass.

The Cultural Ensemble show run by Mary Clabaugh also was a big hit with models coming off the stage runway and entering the crowd. The non-profits ta-bling at the festival in-cluded the Confucius Institute, the American Association of Universi-ty Women, Pilates for Bodies, Lyon Real Estate, Pro-gressive Business Exchange of Davis, Crea-tive Hair and Spa, Services for Internation-al Students and Scholars at UC Davis, Greystone Apartments, West Village, Part-ners in Learning, the Alive Net-work, the United Nations Associa-tion – Davis, and the Yolo County Library. "This is a fundraiser for I-House,"added Sherwin. "As such, we want to warmly thank UC Davis and the Office of Campus Commu-nity Relations under the guidance of Rahim Reed, The Confucius Institute, Brown Construction Co. of Davis, and Wells Fargo Bank. The city of Davis let us use Central Park at no charge." Spencer Cheung was in charge of bringing volunteers to help out on the big day and he was very successful in bringing 80-100 volunteers: high school students, members of the community, uni-versity students from service clubs, frater-nities, sororities and new international stu-dents. He also worked very closely with Hoa Tan, an environmental health special-

O n Friday, Nov. 14, an art reception will be held for Kevin Lewis Cornell (artwork signed LEWIS) at

International House Davis from 6 to 8 p.m. The show title is “Travel.” “My artwork is usually an abstract view of everyday things, actions or places we see around our world,” he said. “Many times we pass through life not noticing the simplistic things around us, not realizing it has or can be depicted in an artistic medium. Artists see these things around us every day. I like to bring the most basic likes to light. My work is a mix medium of material form; Acrylic, oil, acrylic compounds and glass beads. Most of my work is on transparent Plexiglas so my work can be back-lit in a shadow box.” Cornell was born in Hollywood and raised in Glendale. “I’ve been drawn to art naturally; it seemed to be the only thing growing up that made any sense to me. I felt comfortable experimenting with different paints, tools,

Lewis' 'Travel' show opens at I-House Nov. 14

and mediums to enjoy letting go the world around me. I’ve never been professionally trained, the only training I have had is from art teachers in the schools I attended showing me techniques and tools. I won a few art contest early on, but my parent’s interest was always baseball and I trained and played for 14 years.

I attended Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising after finally quitting baseball and found a love for interior design. “Life shortly took over and I stopped art and interior designing for the last 20 years. When my wife and I both lost our jobs five years ago

with four kids, I took a hard look at my life and what I had given up. The fire within has slowly been coming out and I’m creating new work again for the first time in 25 years.

“My reasons for selecting abstract art is I find it the most challenging to do. Still life, landscapes and figure drawing you have something in front of you for your eyes to see. Abstract is a challenge to pull form for head and to communicate to a viewer what you see. Abstract is risky and not always appreciated in comparison to tradition works. “Showing your work can be so nerve racking but I always keep to mind what

Andy Warhol said: “Don’t worry about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad. Whether they love it or not. While they are deciding, make even more art.” ■

Three upcoming lectures on human rights

I nternational House Davis and the UC Davis Human Rights Initiative have joined together to offer a series of

lectures this year and next. The first Davis Community Human Rights Lecture 2014-2015 took place on Oct. 29 and featured a speaker on Syria and healthcare. The continuing series will bring to the university and the community distinguished scholars and practitioners in the fields of human rights, humanitarianism and genocide studies. “The visitors will spend time with UC Davis undergraduates and graduate students taking courses and seminars in the university’s expanding offerings in human rights studies and then give a talk at the I-House for members of the Davis community," said Prof. Keith David Watenpaugh. "We hope members of the Davis community will be able to join us for some or all of the events and ask that you please share our invitation as widely as possible," added Liz McCapes, president of the

International House board of directors. The schedule of speakers and topics follows. All talks will take place at 7:00 pm in the I-House Community Room. Board members are invited to a reception at 6:30 preceding the talk.
