What is THRASS?THRASS is an acronym for:

Teaching

Skills

★ At St Mary of the Cross we are in the implementation phase of developing THRASS from P-6.

★ The chart is designed to enable teachers to explain the spelling of words.

★ THRASS is a teaching tool used by those who have been trained, however, parents play an important role in supporting the work of teachers.

★ We need your help to develop meaning and comprehension at home!

Key TerminologyTHRASS uses the correct terms for speech sounds and spelling choices in English.

Phoneme is the correct term for a speech sound.

Grapheme is the correct term for a spelling choice.

We use this terminology with all learners from P-6 at St Mary of the Cross.

In spoken English we use 44 phonemes.

Graphemes can be a graph, digraph, trigraph and sometimes a quadgraph.

Getting Around The THRASS ChartThe Thrass Chart is a teaching tool.

It is a reference, a toolbox for teaching phonics.

Teachers know how to use a Thrass Chart, as a tool.

All students have access to a Thrass Chart in their

learning spaces from Prep to Six.

There are Thrass Charts located in different areas

of our school.

The Thrass Chart has two part.

The consonant phonemes (24 of them)

The vowel phonemes (20 of them)

The Thrass chart has 120 graphemes or spelling choices.

The yellow chart has pictures and the blue Thrass Chart supports students to move on from pictures to embed phonemes and graphemes into their knowledge.

What do you need to know?● You can support your child/children by developing meaning of words.● Talking about words, using words in context and developing vocabulary will

support learners to develop their reading and writing skills.● Encourage your child/children to refer to a THRASS Chart at home when

reading and writing.● Locate the letter boxes, consonant and vowel sides of the THRASS

Chart.● DO teach that the alphabet is a resource of letters which we choose to

represent speech sounds.● DO teach the 44 speech sounds of spoken English.● DON’T use spelling rules. All these rules provide great confusion.
