CITRIX RECEIVER BEST PRACTICES

Cloud Services Citrix Receiver Best practices document 4/10/2018

Citrix Receiver is a standard requirement at Johns Hopkins. It is used to access applications and virtual desktops throughout the institution. This document will outline requirements, access methods and basic expectations of the Citrix Receiver.

Receiver versions

• Windows version is currently 4.8 and it is recommended to be delivered via SCCM to ensure proper configuration.

• Mac version 12.8.1 is currently supported. • iOS and Android versions are maintained on each app store and can be upgraded when newer

versions are released.

Workstation Requirements

• Workstations must maintain Hopkins standards by utilizing a current operating system, current security and system updates. These are essential to leverage the Receiver effectively.

• All JH and User home systems must follow Microsoft Best Practice for obtaining Critical and Recommended Windows and vendor driver updates for all devices.

• The Receiver should be installed by Systems Management methods to ensure proper configuration.

• Policy should be applied to computers to place mycloud.jh.edu into the Local Intranet Zone.

Windows

• 500MB free disk space • 1GB RAM Mac • 145 MB of free disk space

Supported operating systems:

• Windows 10 (including Windows 10 Anniversary) • Windows 8.1 (32-bit and 64-bit editions) • Mac OS 10.11.x and above • iOS 10.x and above • Android 5.x - Lollypop • Android 6.x - Marshmallow • Android 7.x – Nougat • Linux (Supported by best effort)

CITRIX RECEIVER BEST PRACTICES

Cloud Services Citrix Receiver Best practices document 4/10/2018

Remote access is dependent on good network connectivity to mycloud.jh.edu. A good remote access experience depends primarily on two factors – bandwidth and latency.

Network latency should be 50ms or less for good results, 50-200ms will produce fair results and greater than 200ms will not function satisfactorily. Higher latency will reduce the responsiveness of the desktop, reduce fidelity of graphics and video, and may result in network disconnects.

Bandwidth should be 2 megabits per second (mbps) per user or greater. Remote sites with multiple people should be evaluated for network bandwidth consumption at peak and average usage.

Network firewall and ISP configuration must allow for unimpeded passage of Citrix related traffic. Technical information can be obtained from Citrix or Cloud Services if needed.

Citrix is accessible remotely using two methodologies:

Citrix Storefront: https://mycloud.jh.edu

• Designed for users integrated with JHED and already have authorized access to applications or virtual desktop.

• Designed for remote access outside of the Hopkins network and home users. • The JHConnect VPN is not required or recommended for this access method. • Instructions for connecting can be found HERE.

LAN Admins/Desktop Support Staff: • There have been known issues with rendering in the Windows 7 operating system that is often

remediated by updating to the latest system and video drivers • Best practices call for the latest Windows patches and security updates on all systems • Mac OS updates are also recommended as well as other Apple products.

Connectivity Options: HTML5 vs. the Citrix Receiver Client.

• HTML access provides basic connectivity to MyCloud virtual desktop and Citrix XenApp applications. Limitations will include no pass through printing, scanning or other USB devices. Remote users would need to use the VPN and the receiver client to access these devices.

• The installed Receiver client allows access to pass through printing, attached scanners and

other USB devices (with the exception of data devices such as thumb drives) this is always available on campus.
