GETTING READY FOR A JOB INTERVIEW

    Job InterviewsJob InterviewsJob InterviewsJob Interviews

There is no magic formula which will always ensure the successful outcome of a job

interview. The interview itself is really the final stage in a process which for theinterviewee should have started well before the moment when s/he goes through the

    door of the interview room.

Before interview, you (interviewees) should prepare yourselves by not staying

awake until late at night, the night before the interview, but having enough rest in

order to look fresh. You should explore the place of interview beforehand and you

should be well dressed, have a good breakfast, and try to come to the interview on

time or before the time if possible.

At the interview, you are advised:

    1. to stand there until youre asked to be seated as you come in.2. to develop a friendly approach by greeting, shaking hands, smiling, relaxing,

addressing the interviewer by name, looking at the interviewer or keeping eye

contact, and showing interest in what the interviewer is saying.

    3. to take a moment to think about the answers the questions, to listen carefully,to speak clearly, and not to rush.

    4. to be natural, honest, polite, confident, and positive, and to concentrate onachievement and experience but not to make any false claims.

    5. to sit properly (to sit up straight, feet on the floor, women may cross their legs, adopt a good posture without slouching).

    6. to keep still, without irritating nervous mannerisms such as hand over mouth, biting nails, rubbing head/hair, twisting legs, etc.

    7.

not just to give short answers such as yes or no but support your answerswith examples and give reasons for your opinions. At the same time, you

should stick the point and be relevant; do not give long winding answers.

    8. to use the interview to find out what you want to know about the job and theorganization, and to show keep interest in the job offered.

    9. to show that you are eager to work for the company which offers you the job. After the interview, while everything is still fresh in your mind, try to analyze how

you think the interview went. Note any questions that you were not able to answer or

which you found difficult to answer. Keep notes and ask other experienced

people/friends how to answer the questions.

Go over the following common interview questions and the answers.

    1. What can you tell me about yourself?Answer: Im a self-starter, highly motivated, energetic, and results oriented, but

cooperative and a team player as well. Im a good communicator and can

help others focus on a goal and motivate them attain it. Im persuasive,

but also have good listening skills. Im sensitive to environment and

those around me. I value excellence.

    2. What languages do you speak?Answer: I studied English and Japanese in my last collage and enjoyed them. But

Id like to learn more in order to increase my fluency.

    3. Do you prefer working as a member of a team or would you rather work alone?Answer: Although I realize that teamwork is very important, I can work as hard

alone. Working alone may produce more pressure, but it would also

prove to be a challenge. Whether I prefer to work as a part of a team or

alone depend on the best way to complete the job. Either way, I would

work equally hard with the initiative required for success.

    4. How often do you lose your temper?Answer: Rarely. However, its a good thing to lose-permanently. Ive never lost

my temper at work. At best, it is a waste of time and energy. At worst, it

makes people uncomfortable and diminishes our effectiveness. Even if

we are right about something, losing our temper often destroys our

ability to convince others that we are right. Venting anger is

inappropriate in a business, team-oriented environment.

    5. How have you benefited from your disappointments?Answer: Im glad you said disappointment rather than failures because no one

fails until he or she stops crying. Every disappointment is a learning

experience, so its good to experience. My biggest disappointments have

been the ones Ive tried hardest to overcome. Its worked pretty well

because I have fewer and fewer disappointments as the years pass by.

    6. What do you think you do best?Answer: I am good at serving and socializing with other people and my

supervisory skills have been proved in my previous post with Grand

Hyatt Hotel. In addition, I am adaptable and flexible. I can teach myself

new skills and have proven ability to transfer my job skills to new areas

    successfully.

    7. Do you work well under pressure?Answer: Im often called on to make a quick decision and act on the decision, as a

result of pressure situations. I believe that positive pressure brings out the

best in people. However, when pressure and emergencies become daily

routine in an organization, positive pressure can become negative. As a

competent employee, I should know how to control the pressure and

    dispense it in effective ways.

    8.

What do you do when you have trouble solving a problem?Answer: Trouble never goes away by itself. There is always solution to every

problem. I dont have to be shy to ask questions or to look for the

answers myself. Sometimes it just takes creative investigation. We can

become problem solvers by nature. Ill just keep working with the

problem until I find the solution.

    9. How long will you stay with the company?Answer: As long as I continue to learn and develop my capabilities. As with any

partnership, I intend to fulfill my commitment and meet the challenges as

they come. As long as I perform well on the job and make contribution.

Ill be considered a valuable employee. As long as I make contribution

that is valued, Ill have no reason to leave. I look forward to staying as

    long as Im productive.

10.What are your long-term career objectives?Answer: Im trying to be more realistic in planning my future. To become a good

manager, I dont only have to know any job under the control of managerbut also to experience what everybody does under him or her. However it

needs a certain length of time to gain enough experience. So the position

offered is an important step in my long-term objectives.

11.Tell me why this company should hire you?Answer: You need somebody who can handle not only the human resources but

also household. You need someone who can take objectives and

systematically meet them using creative approaches.

In my previous post with the Sheraton, Ive proven my ability to

work with people and to handle a big responsibility with minimum

supervision. My employer has been satisfied with my achievement andmy customers have always been pleased with the follow-up and service I

    offer.

The customer contact and public relation experience I gained

from my previous post will help me deal with the many different

    personalities that Ill encounter daily.

Finally my educational background in Hotel school makes me

confident to take the post offered.

12.What qualifications do you have that make you feel that you should be hired overothers?

13.What do you consider your greatest weakness that we should know about?14.Describe a time when you (1) worked well under pressure, (2) worked effectively

with others, (3) motivated and led others, (4) solved a difficult problem, and (5)

    accepted constructive criticism?

15.Describe something you have done that shows initiative and willingness to work?16.How have your extracurricular activities, part-time work experience, or volunteer

work prepared you for work in our company?

17.What is important to you in a job?18.What interests you most about this job?19.What are your salary expectations?20.

22.What is your opinion about your present supervisor or manager?23.How do you spend your spare time? What are your hobbies?24.What are your short or long term career plans? What position do you plan to have

    in five years time?
