I got this book from a woman I didn’t know. She said that after putting this formula into practice, she experienced almost instantaneous results. I started reading it one night and found it extremely difficult to understand. It was written 95 years ago using language that is unfamiliar to most people today. I put it on my nightstand intending to read it each night at bedtime, but after several attempts, realized that most people would have the same problem I was having without referring to an old dictionary. I decided to look up all of the words that were difficult to understand and completely rewrite it, using modern words, phrases, and examples. The Science Of Getting Rich” (TSOGR) shows you exactly how economic and emotional security can be achieved in a practical, imaginative, and noncompetitive way, while maintaining a loving and harmonious relationship with all of life. By living in harmony with the positive principles in this book, you can find your rightful place in the cosmic scheme of things, and create for yourself an environment in which you grow in wealth, wisdom, and happiness. CHAPTER 1

Your Right To Be Rich Whatever can be said in praising poverty, the fact remains that it is impossible to live a complete and successful life unless you are rich. You cannot rise to your greatest height in talent or soul development, without money. To awaken your soul and develop your talent, you must have many things to use. You cannot have these things without money to buy them. We develop in mind, body, and soul by making use of things. Society is so organized that you must have money to possess things. Therefore, the basis of true advancement for you must be “The science of Getting Rich (TSOGR). The object of all life is development. Everybody has an absolute right to all of the development they are capable of attaining.

Your right to life means your right to have the free and unrestricted use of all the things which may be necessary to your fullest mental, spiritual, and physical arousement. I’m not speaking of riches in a figurative way; to get rich does not mean to be satisfied or contented with a little. Nobody should be satisfied with a little, if they are capable of using and enjoying more. You should have all that can contribute to the power, elegance, beauty, and richness of life; to be content with less is sinful.

People who own all they want for the living of all the life they are capable of living, are rich. Poor people do not have all they want. Life has advanced so far and become so complex that even the middle class requires a lot of money in order to live in a manner that even approaches completeness. Everyone wants to become all they are capable of becoming. This desire to realize innate possibilities is inherent in human nature; we cannot help wanting to be all that we can be. You can only become what you want to be by making use of things. You can only have the use of things, when you get rich enough to buy them. Therefore, understanding the formula in this book is the most essential knowledge of all knowledge, for getting rich.

There is nothing wrong in wanting to be rich. The desire for riches is in reality, the desire for a richer, fuller, and more abundant life. That is praiseworthy. People who don’t desire to live more abundantly are abnormal. The three motives for living are: the body, the mind, and the soul. One is not better or holier than the other. All are equal and desirable. No one can live fully if any one is cut short of full life and expression. It is not right or noble to live only for the soul and deny the mind and body. In fact it is wrong to live for the intellect and deny body and soul.

Many people are familiar with the consequences of living for the body and denying the mind and the soul. Real life means the complete expression of all that you can give through your body, mind, and soul. You cannot be truly happy or satisfied, unless your body is living fully in every function, and the same is true of your mind and soul. Wherever there is unexpressed possibility or purpose not performed, there is unsatisfied desire. Desire is possibility seeking expression or purpose seeking performance.


You cannot live fully in body without good food, comfortable clothing, warm shelter, and freedom from excessive toil. Rest and recreation are necessary to your physical life. You cannot live fully in mind without books and time to read them, without opportunity for travel and observation, or without intellectual companionship.

To live fully in mind you must have intellectual recreations, and surround yourself with all the objects of art and beauty you are capable of using and appreciating. To live fully in soul, you must have love. Love is denied expression by poverty. Your highest happiness is found in the delivery of benefits to those you love. Love finds its most natural and spontaneous expression in giving. If you have nothing to give you cannot fill your place as a spouse, parent, citizen, or human being. It is in the use of material things that you find full life for your body, and it is how you develop your mind and open your soul. That is why you should be rich.

It is only normal that you should desire to be rich. You can’t help doing so. Therefore, you should give your complete attention to this book for the next 6 to 12 months. It is the noblest and most necessary of all studies. If you ignore it, you are derelict in your duty to yourself, to the Creator and to humanity. You can render no greater service to the Creator and humanity, than to make the most of yourself.


CHAPTER 2

There is A Science to Getting Rich The formula for getting rich is an exact science, just like algebra and arithmetic. Certain laws govern the process of acquiring riches. Once learned and obeyed, anyone can get rich with mathematical certainty. Money and property come to you as a result of doing things in a Certain Way; whether you do them on purpose or accidentally, you do get rich. Don’t do things in a Certain Way and no matter how hard you work or how able you are, you will remain poor. It’s a natural law; “like causes produce like effects.” Being rich isn’t a matter of environment; otherwise, everyone in a certain neighborhood would get rich. But, rich and poor live side by side in the same environment and occupation. When two people are in the same city and occupation, and one gets rich and one remains poor, that is proof that it is not the environment. Some environments are definitely more favorable than others, but when one person gets rich and one doesn’t, in the same city and occupation that proves that getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way.

Getting rich is not due solely on talent. Many talented people remain poor, while those with little talent get rich. Most rich people are average in all respects, having no greater talents or abilities than the poor. Those that get rich do so because they do things in a Certain Way. It is not a matter of being a good saver or thrifty. Many miserly people are poor, while free spenders get rich; it’s because they do things in a Certain Way. Two people in the same occupation can do similar things; and one gets rich and one doesn’t. If getting rich is the result of doing things in a Certain Way, and if “like-causes produce like-effects”, then those who do things in a Certain Way, get rich. The entire issue is brought within the area of an exact science.

Is the Certain Way so difficult to do that only a few can do it? NO! Talented people get rich, and so do blockheads, intellectually brilliant people get rich, and so do stupid people; physically strong people get rich, and so do weak and sickly people. True, you must have a degree of the ability to think and understand. Truth is, anyone with enough brains to understand this book, can get rich. Location counts for something. You can’t move to the Sahara desert and expect to be successful because getting rich involves the necessity of dealing with people; but that’s about as far as the environment goes. If anyone in your city and occupation can get rich, so can you. It is not a matter of choosing the right job either. People get rich in every occupation, while their neighbors in the same occupation remain poor. You will do best in an occupation that is pleasant to you. If you have developed certain talents, you will do best in an occupation that utilizes those talents. You will also do best in an occupation that is suited to your locality. An ice-cream parlor does best in a warm climate; a salmon fishery does best in the Northwest. Aside from these general limitations, getting rich is not dependent upon working in a particular occupation.


You must learn how to do things in a Certain Way to get rich. If you are working in a particular occupation, and not getting rich, and someone in your city in the same occupation is getting rich, it is because they are doing things in a certain way, and you aren’t.

Being broke does not prevent you from getting rich, although, with money, your increase is easier and more rapid. One with a lot of money is already rich and doesn’t need to consider how to get rich. Begin doing things in the Certain Way and you will get rich and acquire money, no matter how poor you are now. Getting money is part of the process of getting rich; it is part of the result that invariably follows you doing things in the Certain Way. You may be deep in debt, no friends, no influence, and no resources, but when you start doing things in a certain way, you will begin to get rich. Remember, “Like-causes produce like-effects.” No money? You can get money! In the wrong business? You can get in the right business! In the wrong location? You can move to the right location! But, before you pick up and move, start doing things in a Certain Way that causes success in your present occupation and location. You will be able to make your move much faster, if you do.


CHAPTER 3

Is Opportunity Monopolized? You are not kept poor because opportunity has been monopolized. Some opportunities may be closed to you, but most are wide open. It would be difficult for you to attempt to control a railroad, but the Internet and alternative energy are still in their infancy. There is plenty of room to get rich in these fields. Both will provide fantastic opportunities for thousands, and maybe millions, of people in the future. Also, you can get rich selling products on and off the Internet. If you are employed in the auto industry, purchasing the plant you work in might not be possible. But, start acting in a Certain Way and you will be able to leave the plant, start your own business and get rich. You may think it is impossible to start your own business, but it is not that hard, and I can prove it to you.

At different times the tide of opportunity travels in different directions, according to the needs of the whole, plus the particular stage of social evolution that has been reached. Today, it is traveling at whorp speed toward the information age. The opportunity to get rich supplying information is enormous. Go with the tide, instead of trying to swim against it. Factory workers as individuals, and as a class are not deprived of opportunity, kept down by their masters, or held back by big business. They stay where they are because they don’t do things in a Certain Way.

Whenever they begin to do things in a Certain Way, they will become the master class because the law of wealth works the same for everyone. You will remain where you are as long as you continue to do as you have always done. But, you are no longer held back because of ignorance or mental laziness. Follow the tide of opportunity and you will get rich. You are not kept in poverty by a shortage in the supply of riches. There is more than enough to go around. A palace as large as the Whitehouse could be built for every family on earth, just from building material in the United States alone. The U.S. can produce enough wool, cotton, linen, and silk to clothe every person on earth, finer than King Solomon dressed in all his glory. The visible supply is practically inexhaustible; and the invisible supply is truly inexhaustible.

Everything on earth is made from one original substance out of which all things proceed. New forms are constantly being made as older ones dissolve, but all are shapes formed from “One Thing”. There is no limit to the supply of this Formless Stuff. Everything in the universe is made of it, but it wasn’t all used up to make the universe. The spaces in, through, and between the forms of the visible universe are saturated with Formless Stuff. It is the raw material of everything. Ten thousand times as much as has been made, can still be made. Even then we won’t have exhausted the supply of this universal raw material.


You are not poor because nature is poor or there isn’t enough to go around. Nature is an inexhaustible storehouse of riches; the supply never runs out. “Formless stuff” is alive with creative energy and is constantly producing more forms. When the supply of building material is exhausted, more will be produced. When the soil is exhausted so plants will no longer grow upon it, it will be renewed or more soil will be made. When all the gold and silver has been mined, more will be produced from this Formless Stuff. Formless Stuff responds to all the needs of mankind. It will not let us be without good things. This is true of mankind collectively; humans as a whole are always abundantly rich. If you are poor, it is because you don’t do things in a Certain Way. The Formless Stuff is intelligent. It thinks, it is alive, and is always motivated toward more life. It is the natural and inherent yearning of life to seek to live more. It is the nature of intelligence to enlarge itself and of consciousness to seek to extend its boundaries, and find fuller expression. Formless Living Substance, throwing itself into form in order to express itself more fully, is what makes up the universe. The universe is a great Living Presence, always moving naturally toward more life, and fuller performance. Nature is formed for the evolution of life. Its driving motivation is the increase of life. For this cause, everything that can possibly minister to life is abundantly provided. There can be no lack, unless the Creator contradicts himself and nullifies his own work. You are not kept poor by a shortage in the supply of riches. Later I will demonstrate that even the resources of the Formless Stuff are at your command, if you will act and think in a Certain Way.


CHAPTER 4

The First Principle of Getting Rich Thought is the only power that can produce tangible riches from Formless Stuff. The stuff from which all things are made is a substance that thinks. A thought of form in this substance produces the form. Original Substance moves according to its thoughts. Every form and process you see in nature is the visible expression of a thought in Original Substance. As the Formless Stuff thinks of a form, it takes that form; as it thinks of a motion, it makes that motion. That is how all things are created. We live in a thought world, which is part of a thought universe. The thought of a moving universe extended throughout Formless Substance, and the Thinking Stuff moving according to that thought, took the form of planets and maintains that form. Thinking Substance takes the form of it’s thought and moves according to the thought. Holding the idea of a circling system of suns and worlds, it takes the form of these bodies, and moves them as it thinks. Thinking the form of a slow-growing oak tree, it moves accordingly and produces the tree, even though centuries are required to do the work. In creating, the Formless stuff seems to move according to the lines of motion that it has established. The thought of an oak tree does not cause the instant formation of a full-grown tree. It starts in motion the forces that will produce the tree along established lines of growth.

Every thought of form held in thinking Substance causes the creation of the form, but generally, along lines of growth and action already established. The thought of a house, if it were impressed upon Formless Stuff, wouldn’t cause the instant formation of the house, but it would cause the turning of creative energies already working in trade and commerce into such channels as to result in the speedy building of the house. If there were no existing channels through which the creative energy could work, then the house would be formed directly from primal stuff, without waiting for the slow processes of the organic and inorganic world.

No thought of form can be impressed upon Original Substance without causing the creation of that form. You are a thinking center and can originate thought. All the forms that you fashion with your hands must first exist in your thoughts. You cannot shape a thing until you have thought of it. To date, most people have confined their efforts wholly to the work of their hands. They have applied manual labor to the world of forms, seeking to change or modify those already existing, but have never thought of trying to cause the creation of new forms by impressing their thoughts upon Formless Stuff.


When you think of a form, you take material from the forms of nature, and make an image of that form in your mind. To date, most people have made little or no effort to cooperate with Formless stuff, and work with the Creator. Man has not yet realized he can do what the Creator does. People reshape and modify existing forms by manual labor, but give little attention as to whether they can produce things from Formless Stuff by communicating their thoughts to it. But, you can do it starting today! To learn how, you must study only three basic propositions.

First, I assert that there is one original formless stuff or substance from which all things are made. All the seemingly many elements are but different presentations of one element. All the many forms found in organic and inorganic nature are simply different shapes, made from the same thinking stuff. A thought held in it produces the form of the thought. A thought in thinking stuff produces shapes. You are a thinking center, capable of original thought. If you can communicate your thoughts to original thinking stuff, you can cause the creation, or formation of the things you think about.

To summarize: There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made and which in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this substance produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. You can form things in your thought, and by impressing your thought upon formless stuff you can cause the thing you think about to be created.

I can prove these statements by both logic and experience. Reasoning back from the phenomena of form and thought, I come to one original thinking substance. Reasoning forward, I come to man's power to cause the formation of the thing he thinks about. By experiment, I find this reasoning to be true, and this is my strongest proof. If one person gets rich following the formula, that is enough to support my claim. If everyone who follows the formula gets rich, that is positive proof, at least until somebody who follows the formula fails. The theory is true until the formula fails, but it won’t fail. Everyone who follows the formula gets rich by doing things in a Certain Way. Your way of doing things is the direct result of the way you think about things. To do things in the way that you want to do them, you must acquire the ability to think the way you want to think. That is the first step toward getting rich. To think what you want to think is to think TRUTH, regardless of appearances. You have the natural and inherent power to think what you want to think, but it requires far more effort to do so than it does to think the thoughts suggested by appearances. To think according to appearances is easy. To think TRUTH regardless of appearances is difficult. It requires the expenditure of more effort than any other work you are called on to perform.


There’s no labor from which most people shrink as from sustained and consecutive thought. It is the hardest work in the world; especially true when truth is contrary to appearances. Every appearance in the visible world tends to produce a corresponding form in the mind, which observes it. Only holding the thought of the TRUTH can prevent it. To look upon the appearance of disease produces the form of disease in your own mind and ultimately in your body. You must hold the thought of the truth, which is there is no disease. It is only an appearance, but the reality is health.

To look upon the appearance of poverty produces corresponding forms in your own mind. You must hold to the truth that there is no poverty, only abundance. To think health when surrounded by the appearance of disease, or think riches while in the midst of appearances of poverty, requires power. Everyone who acquires this power becomes a MASTER MIND, conquers fate and gets what they want. This power can only be acquired by understanding the basic fact behind all appearances. There is one Thinking Stuff from which and by which all things are made. Can you grasp the truth that every thought held in this substance becomes a form, and that you can so impress your thoughts upon it as to cause your thoughts to take form and become visible things? When you realize this, you lose all doubt and fear, and understand that you can create what you desire to create. You can get what you want, and become what you want to be.

The first step toward getting rich; know that there is a thinking stuff from which all things are made and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought, in this substance produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. You can form things in your thought. By impressing your thought upon formless stuff, you can cause the thing you think about to be created.

Lay aside all other concepts. Dwell upon this concept until it is fixed in your mind and becomes your habitual thought. Read these creed statements repeatedly. Write them on a 3 x 5 card and memorize every word. Meditate upon them until you believe what they say. When a doubt comes over you, cast it aside. Do not listen to arguments against this idea, or attend lectures where a contrary concept is taught, or read magazines and books that teach a different concept. Otherwise, you will confuse your faith and your effort to get rich will be in vain. Don’t ask why these things are true, or speculate as to how they can be true. If you accept these statements on trust and faith for the next 6 to 12 months, you will be utterly amazed at the results.


CHAPTER 5

Increasing Life.

Don’t think for a minute that God wants you to be poor, or that his objectives are better served if you are poor. Intelligent Stuff is in all things. It lives in all things, including you. It is a consciously Living Substance and has the natural desire for the increase of all life. Every living thing must continually seek the enlargement of its life because life, in the mere act of living, must increase itself. A seed dropped to the ground springs into activity. In the act of living, it produces more seeds. Life by living multiplies itself and forever becomes more. It must for it to continue to exist.

Intelligence is under the same necessity for continuous increase. Every thought you have makes it necessary for you to think another thought. Intelligence is continually expanding. Every fact you learn leads you to learn another fact. Knowledge is continually increasing. Every talent you cultivate brings to the mind the desire to cultivate another talent. You are subject to the urge of life seeking expression, which drives you to know more, do more, and be more. In order to know more, do more, and be more, you must have more things to use. You learn more, do more, and become more by using things. Therefore, you must become rich so that you can learn more, do more, become more, and live more.

The desire for riches is simply the capability for a larger life, seeking fulfillment. Every desire you have is the attempt of an unexpressed possibility to spring into action. It is power seeking to manifest itself, which causes desire. That which makes you want more money is the same as that which makes a plant grow; life seeking fuller expression. The One Living Stuff is subject to this inherent law of all life. It is filled with the desire to live more and is under the necessity of creating things. This One Substance desires to live more in you; hence it wants you to have everything you desire. God desires you to be rich so that he can express himself better through you because you have plenty of things to use when giving his expression. He can live more in you when you have unlimited command of the means of life.

The universe wants you to have everything you desire. Nature is friendly to your plans. Everything in the world is naturally for you. You must convince your mind that these things are true. It is essential, however that your purpose should harmonize with the same purpose that is in All. You must want real life, not just the mere pleasure of sensual gratification. Life is the performance of function. You live, only when you perform every function; physical, mental, and spiritual, of which you are capable, without excess in any one. Do not want to get rich in order to live hedonistically (the doctrine that pleasure or happiness is the sole good in life), that is not living. The performance of every physical function is a part of life. You do not live completely if you deny the impulses of the body, which is a normal and healthful expression. Do not want to get rich solely to enjoy mental pleasures, to gain knowledge, gratify ambition, outshine others, or just to become famous. Of course they are a legitimate part of life. But, if you live for the pleasures of the intellect alone, you only have a partial life. You will never be satisfied with your lot.


Do not want to get rich only for the good of others, for the salvation of mankind, or to experience the joys of generosity and sacrifice. The joys of the soul are only one part of life. They are no better or nobler than any other part. You want to be rich in order that you may eat, drink, and be merry when it is time to do so; surround yourself with beautiful things, see distant lands, feed your mind, develop your intellect; love people, do kind things, and be able to play a good part in helping the world see the truth. Extreme altruism is no better or nobler than extreme selfishness; both are mistakes. Stop thinking that God wants you to sacrifice yourself for others, or that you can secure his favor by doing so. God requires nothing of the kind. He wants you to make the most of yourself, for yourself, and for others. You can help others more by making the most of yourself than any other way. You make the most of yourself by getting rich. So it is right and praiseworthy that you should give your first and best thoughts to the work of getting rich. The desire of God is for more life to all. It can’t be made to work for less life to anyone. It is equally in all, seeking riches and life. Intelligent Stuff will make things for you, but it won’t take things away from someone else to give to you. You must stop thinking about competing. You are to create, not compete for what is already created. You don’t have to take anything away from anyone, drive sharp bargains, cheat, take advantage of, or let any man work for you for less than what he earns. You do not have to covet the property of others, or to look at it with wishful eyes. Nobody has anything you can’t have, without taking it from him. You must be a creator, not a competitor. You are going to get what you want in such a way that when you get it, every party to the transaction will have more than he has now. I’m aware that there are people who get a vast amount of money by proceeding in direct opposition to what I just said. Sometimes those who become very rich, do so purely by their extraordinary ability on the plane of rivalry. Sometimes they unconsciously relate themselves to formless stuff in its great purposes and movements for the general cultural upbuilding through industrial evolution. Riches secured on the competitive plane are never pleasing or permanent. They are yours today and another's tomorrow. If you are to get rich in a scientific and certain way, you must get rid of your competitive thoughts. Do not think the supply is limited. As soon as you think all the money is being cornered and controlled by bankers or that you must get laws passed to stop the process, etc, you are thinking in the competitive mind. Your power to cause creation is gone for the time being and what is worse, you will most likely arrest the creative movements you have already instituted. Believe that there are millions of dollars' worth of gold in the earth not yet brought to light, and that if there were none, more would be created from Thinking Stuff to supply your needs. Believe that the gold you want will come, even if it is necessary for ten thousand people to be led to the discovery of new gold mines tomorrow.


Look at the limitless riches in Formless Stuff and know that they are coming to you as fast as you can receive and use them. No one who tries to corner the visible supply can prevent you from getting what is yours. Never allow yourself to think that all the best building spots will be taken before you are ready to build, unless you hurry. And, do not be concerned that the Banks and Corporations will soon own everything. Do not be afraid that you will lose what you desire because someone "beats you to it." That cannot possibly happen. You are not seeking anything that is possessed by someone else, you are causing what you want to be created from formless Stuff; the supply is without limit. Memorize the following statement: There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this substance produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. You can form things in your thought. By impressing your thought upon formless substance, you can cause the thing you think about to be created.


Chapter 6

How Riches Come to You When I say you don’t have to drive sharp bargains, I don’t mean you are above the necessity of having to deal with people, but you don’t have to deal with them unfairly, or attempt to get something for nothing. You can give everyone more than you take. You cannot give everyone more in cash market value than you take, but you can give more in use value than the cash value of the thing you take. The paper and ink in a book you sell, may not be worth the price you are asking for it, but if it’s ideas bring people money, knowledge, and/or happiness, you have not wronged them. You have given them a great use value for the small cash value they paid.

Suppose I own a picture by a great artist, worth $100,000. If I convince an Eskimo in Alaska to give me a bundle of furs worth $ 500 for the picture, I have wronged him. The picture has no use value to him. It won’t add anything to his life. If I sell him a gun worth $50 for his furs, he can use the gun to get more furs and food. It will add to his life in many ways, and make him rich. Once you switch from the competitive to the creative plane, you can examine all of your business transactions. If you sell something that doesn’t add more to the buyer’s life than what you get in exchange, you can discontinue the transaction. You don’t have to beat anyone in business. If you are in a business that scams people, get out of it at once. Give everyone more in use value than you get in cash value, so that you are adding to the life of the world in every business transaction. If you have employees, you must take more in cash value than you pay in wages, but you can organize your business so that it is filled with the principles of advancement. Every employee who wants to, may advance everyday. You can have your business do for your employees what this book does for you. You can run your business like a ladder. Every employee can also get rich. Offer your employees the chance to climb the ladder of success; if they refuse to do so, that’s their decision.

Finally, just because you are to cause the creation of your riches from Formless Stuff that permeates your entire environment, it does not follow that they are to take shape out of thin air and appear before your eyes. If you want a new sewing machine, you cannot think about a sewing machine until it is formed without using your hands. You must hold a mental image of it with the most positive certainty that it is being made; that it is on its way to you. After once forming the thought, you must have the most absolute and unquestioning faith that the sewing machine is coming. Do not think of it or speak of it in any other way than as being sure to arrive. Claim it as already yours. It will be brought to you by the power of the Supreme Intelligence, acting upon the minds of mankind. If you live in Maine, maybe someone from Texas or Japan will be brought to you to engage in a transaction that will result in you getting what you want. The transaction will be as much to that person’s advantage as it is to yours.


The Thinking Stuff is through all, in all, communicating with all, and can influence all. The desire of Thinking Stuff for a fuller life and better living has caused the creation of all the sewing machines already made. It can cause the creation of millions more. When people set it in motion by desire and faith, and by acting in a Certain Way, it happens. You can certainly have a sewing machine in your home, as well as have any other thing that you want, which you will use for the advancement of your own life and the lives of others. You need not hesitate about asking largely; "It is the Creator’s pleasure to give you the kingdom". Original Stuff wants to live all that is possible in you. It wants you to have all you can or will use for living an abundant life. If you fix upon your consciousness that the desire you feel for the possession of riches is one with the desire of God for more complete expression, then your faith becomes invincible.

Wallace Wattles saw a little boy at a piano trying vainly to play a song. The boy was frustrated that he was unable to play real music. Wallace asked, “Why are you so upset?” The boy said, "I can feel the music in me, but I can't make my hands go right." The music in him was the URGE of formless stuff containing all the possibilities of life. All that there is of music was seeking expression through the little boy. God is trying to live, do and enjoy things through humanity. He is saying, "I want hands to build wonderful structures, to play divine music, to paint glorious pictures; I want feet to run errands, eyes to see my beauties, tongues to tell mighty truths and to sing marvelous songs".

All there is of possibility is seeking expression through people. God wants those who can play music to have pianos and all the other instruments they want so they have the means to cultivate their talents to the fullest extent. He wants those who can appreciate beauty to be able to surround themselves with beautiful things, who can discern truth to have every opportunity to travel and observe, who can appreciate dress to be beautifully clothed, and who can appreciate great food to be lavishly fed. God wants these things because He enjoys and appreciates them. The desire you feel for riches is the Infinite, seeking to express Himself in you, just like he sought to find expression in the little boy. Do not hesitate to ask largely. Your part is to fully communicate your desires to God.

This is very difficult for most people. They retain some of the old ideas that poverty and self-sacrifice please God. They see living in poverty as a part of God’s plan; a necessity of nature. They believe that God has finished His work, has made all that He can make, and that most people must stay poor because there is not enough to go around. They hold to so much of this erroneous thought that they feel ashamed to ask for riches. They try not to want for more than a modest living to make them fairly comfortable.

A man was told that he must get in his mind a clear picture of the things he wanted so the creative thought might be impressed on Formless Stuff. The man was very poor and only had what he earned everyday. He could not grasp the fact that all wealth was his. He asked for a new rug and a stove to heat his home. He obtained both items in two months. It then dawned on him that he had not asked for enough. He went through his house and planned all the improvements he wanted to make. He added a bay window here, a family room there, until his ideal home was clear in his mind. Next, he planned the furnishings. Holding the whole picture in his mind, he started living in the Certain Way, moving toward the things he wanted. Today he has all the things he asked for, and is now planning to get much greater things.


CHAPTER 7

Gratitude The illustrations in the last chapter convey that the first step toward getting rich is to express the idea of your wants to the Formless Stuff. In order to do this, it is necessary to speak about yourself to the Formless stuff in a harmonious way. To secure this harmonious relationship is a matter of primary and vital importance. There are three steps that will bring you into perfect harmony with God. The whole process of mental adjustment and atonement can be summed up in just one word, GRATITUDE. First: You must believe that there is one Intelligent Stuff from which all things proceed. Second: You must believe that this Stuff gives you everything you desire. Third: You must relate yourself to this intelligent Stuff by a feeling of deep and profound gratitude. Many people who arrange their lives correctly in all other ways are kept in poverty by their lack of gratitude. Having received a gift from God, they cut the wires that connect them to God by failing to acknowledge him. It is easy to understand that the nearer we live to the source of wealth, the more wealth we will receive. The grateful soul lives in much closer touch with God than one that doesn’t look to Him in thankful acknowledgment. The more gratefully we fix our minds on the Supreme when good things come to us, the more good things we will receive, and the more rapidly they will come. The mental attitude of gratitude draws the mind into closer touch with the source from which all blessings come. Gratitude brings your mind into closer harmony with the creative energies of the universe. Consider it well and you will see that it is true. The good things you already have; came to you along the lines of obedience to certain laws. Gratitude will lead your mind out along the ways by which things come. Gratitude will keep you in close harmony with creative thought, and prevent you from falling into competitive thought. Gratitude alone can keep you looking toward the All, and prevent you from falling into the error of thinking of the supply as limited. If you think the supply is limited, that will be fatal to your hopes and dreams. There is a Law of Gratitude, and it is absolutely necessary that you observe it, if you want to get the results you claim to seek. The law of gratitude is the natural principal that action and reaction are always equal in opposite directions. The grateful outreaching of your mind in thankful praise to the Supreme is a release or disbursement of force. It cannot fail to reach that to which it is addressed. The reaction is an instantaneous movement towards you.


If your gratitude is strong and constant, the reaction in Formless Stuff will be strong and constant. The movement of the things you want will be toward you. You cannot exercise much power without gratitude. Gratitude keeps you connected with Power, but the value of gratitude does not consist solely of obtaining you more blessings in the future. With gratitude you can keep from having dissatisfied thoughts regarding things as they are now. The moment you permit your mind to dwell on dissatisfaction about things as they are, you begin to lose ground. When you think about the common, ordinary, poor, squalid and mean, your mind takes the form of those things. It transmits those forms or mental images to the Formless Stuff. Then, the common, ordinary, poor, squalid, and mean come to you. When you permit your mind to dwell on inferior things, you become inferior, and start to surround yourself with inferior things. On the other hand, when you fix your attention on the best, you surround yourself with the best, and become the best. The Creative Power within us makes us into the image of those things we think about. We are Thinking Stuff that always takes the form of what we think about. The grateful mind constantly focuses on the best, and tends to be the best. It takes the form or character of the best and receives the best. Faith is born of gratitude. The grateful mind continually expects good things and expectation becomes faith. The reaction of gratitude upon one's mind produces faith. Every outgoing wave of grateful thanksgiving increases faith. If you have no feeling of gratitude, you cannot long retain a living faith. Without a living faith, you cannot get rich following the creative method (explained later). You must cultivate the habit of being grateful for every good thing that comes to you, and you must give thanks continuously. All things have contributed to your advancement. Therefore, include all things in your gratitude. Do not waste your precious time thinking or talking about the shortcomings or wrong actions of politicians and bureaucrats. Their organization of the world is what made your opportunity. All you get comes to you because of them. Don’t rage against corrupt politicians and ignorant bureaucrats; if it was not for them, there would be anarchy, and your opportunity to get rich would be greatly diminished. God has worked a long time to bring us up to where we are in industry, and government continues with God’s work. I believe God will do away with politicians, bureaucrats, and captains of industry, as soon He can spare them. In the meantime, these people are helping to arrange the lines of transmission along which your riches will come to you. Be grateful for them. This type of thinking will bring you into harmonious relations with the good in everything and the good in everything will move you toward getting rich.


CHAPTER 8

Thinking in the Certain Way

You must form a clear and definite mental image of what you want. You cannot transmit an idea unless you have it. Most people fail to impress Thinking Stuff because they only have a vague and misty concept of the things they want to do, have, and become. It is not enough to have a general desire for wealth "to do good with". Everyone has that desire. It is not enough to want to travel. Everybody desires that too. You would not send a letter to a friend with only the alphabet and ask your friend to write your message, or take words at random from the dictionary. You would write a letter that meant something and was understandable. When you try to communicate your wants to the formless stuff, you must use coherent statements, and know what you desire You cannot get rich or stir your creative powers into action by sending out vague messages.

Go over your dreams and desires just like the man who went over his home. Describe what you want in writing. Get a clear mental picture of it, as you want it to look when you get it. You must have a clear mental picture continually in your mind, like the port the Captain has in mind when he is sailing. You must keep your face toward it all the time. You must keep it in sight, like the steersman keeps his compass in sight. You don’t need to take exercises in concentration, set aside special times for prayer and affirmations, go into the silence, or participate in rituals of any kind. Just know for certain what you desire and desire it badly enough that it stays in your thoughts. Spend almost all of your leisure time contemplating your picture. Forget about certain exercises to concentrate your mind on those things you desire. It is the things you don’t care much about that requires effort to focus your attention on. Unless you really want to get rich, so that your desire is strong enough to hold your thoughts directed to the purpose as the magnetic pole holds the needle of a compass, it is foolhardy to try to follow these instructions. These methods are for people whose burning desire for riches is strong enough to overcome mental laziness and the love of ease; they are willing to work. The more clear and definite you make your picture, dwell upon it, bringing out all the delightful details, the stronger your desire will be, and the easier it will be to focus your mind on the picture of what you desire.

Something else is necessary. Besides merely seeing the picture clearly (If that is all you do, you are just a dreamer), you will have little or no power for accomplishment, unless the purpose to realize it, to bring it out in tangible expression is invincible and unwavering. You must have faith that the thing is already yours, is "at hand" and you have only to take possession of it. Live in the new home mentally, until it takes form around you physically. In the mental realm, enter at once into the full enjoyment of the things you desire.


See the things you desire as if they were around you all the time. See yourself owning and using them in your imagination just as you will use them after they are yours. Dwell upon your mental picture until it is clear and distinct and then take the mental attitude of ownership toward everything you want in your picture. Take possession of it in mind, and in the full faith that it is actually yours, and hold to this mental picture of ownership. Do not waiver for an instant in the faith that it is real, and be as thankful for it as you expect to be after it has taken form. People, who can sincerely thank God for the things that as yet they own only in their imagination, have real, abiding faith. They will cause the creation of whatever they want. You do not need to pray repeatedly for the things you want. It is not necessary to tell God about it all the time.

Your part is to intelligently formulate your desire for the things you think will make for a larger life, to get your desires arranged into a coherent whole, and to impress your Whole Desire upon the Formless Stuff that has the power to bring them to you. You do not make this impression by repeating strings of words. You make it by holding the vision with unshakable purpose to attain it with steadfast faith you will attain it. But, the answer to prayer isn’t according to your faith while you’re talking; it is according to your faith while you are working.

You don’t impress God by having a special Sabbath day set aside to tell Him what you want, and then forget Him the rest of the week; or by having a special hour to pray and then dismiss the matter from your mind until it’s time to pray again. Oral prayer is fine, and has its effect, especially clarifying your vision and strengthening your faith, but it is not your oral petitions that get you what you want. You need to "pray without ceasing," holding steadily to your vision, with the purpose to cause its creation into solid form, and the faith that you are doing so. The whole matter turns on receiving once you have clearly formed your vision.

When you have formed your vision, it is good to make an oral statement addressing the Supreme in reverent prayer. From that moment on, you must in your mind, receive what you have asked for. Live in the new house, wear the fine clothes, ride in the new car, take that exotic vacation, and confidently plan for even greater vacations. Think and speak of all the things you have asked for in terms of actual present ownership. Imagine an environment and a financial condition exactly as you want them and then live all the time in that imaginary environment and financial condition. Make sure, however, that you do not do this as a mere dreamer and castle builder. Hold on to the faith that the imaginary is being realized. Faith and purpose in the use of the imagination makes the difference between the scientist and the dreamer. Having learned these things, now you must learn the proper use of the Will.


CHAPTER 9

How to Use Your Will

To get rich in a scientific way, do not attempt to apply your will to anything outside of yourself. You have no right to do so. It’s wrong to apply your will to others in order to get them to do what you want. It is as clearly wrong to force people by mental power, as it is to force them by physical power. Both reduce them to slavery; the only difference is the method. Also, it is stealing. You have no right to use your will upon another person, even “for his or her own good". You don’t know what is best. Any attempt to use your will upon others will only tend to defeat your purpose. You do not need to apply your will to things in order to compel them to come to you. That would be like trying to compel God, which would be foolish and useless, as well as irreverent. You don’t have to compel God to give you good things anymore than you have to use your will to make the sun rise. Substance is friendly to you and is more eager to give you what you want than you are to get it. To get rich, you only need to use your will upon yourself. When you know what to think and do, then you must use your will to compel yourself to think and do the right thing. That is the legitimate use of your will in getting what you want; using it to hold yourself to the right course, and to keep you thinking and acting in the Certain Way. Do not try to project your will, thoughts, or mind out into space to "act" on things or people. Keep your mind at home, and use it to form a mental image of what you want; to hold that vision with faith and purpose. Use your will to keep your mind working in the Right Way. The more steady and continuous your faith and purpose, the more rapidly you will get rich because you will make only positive impressions upon Formless Stuff. You will not neutralize or offset it by negative impressions. The vision of your desires, held with faith and purpose, is taken up by the Formless Stuff and permeates throughout the universe. As this impression spreads, all things are set, moving toward its realization. Everything, living, inanimate, and things yet created are stirred toward bringing what you want into being. All forces start to be exerted in that direction; to move toward you. The minds of people everywhere are influenced toward doing the things necessary to fulfilling your desires; they work for you unconsciously. You can easily prove this by starting a negative impression in the Formless Stuff. Doubt or unbelief is as certain to start a movement away from you, as faith and purpose are to start one toward you. It is by not understanding this that most people who attempt to make use of "mental science" to get rich, fail. Every moment you spend in giving heed to doubts and fears, spend in worry, possessed by unbelief, sends a current away from you in the whole domain of Intelligent Substance. Since belief is so important, it behooves you to guard your thoughts. Your beliefs will be shaped to a great extent by the things you observe and think about, so it is important that you control your attention.


Here is where the will comes into use. It is by your will that you determine what things your attention shall be fixed on. Like I said earlier, if you want to get rich, don’t make a study of poverty. Things are not brought into being by thinking about their opposites. Studying and thinking about disease does not attain health. Studying and thinking about sin does not promote righteousness. No one gets rich by studying and thinking about poverty. Medicine as a science of disease has actually increased disease. Religion as a science of sin has greatly increased sin, and economics as a study of poverty will fill the world with misery and want. Do not talk about, investigate, or concern yourself with poverty. Never mind what causes it; have nothing to do with it. What should concern you is the cure. Also, do not spend your time in charitable work or charity movements. Charity only tends to perpetuate the wretchedness it aims to eradicate. I’m not saying this to be hardhearted, unkind, or refuse to hear the cries of the needy. Just don’t try to eradicate poverty in the conventional way. Put poverty and all that pertains to it behind you. The best way to help the poor is for you to become rich. If you fill your mind with pictures of poverty, you cannot hold the mental image that will make you rich. Also, do not read books or papers that give circumstantial accounts of the misery of welfare recipients, or the horrors of ghetto housing, etc. Refuse to read anything that fills your mind with gloomy images of want and suffering. You cannot help the poor in the least by knowing about these things. The widespread knowledge of them does not tend to end poverty. Not allowing pictures of poverty to enter your mind tends to end poverty. Describing pictures of wealth into the minds of the poor is the best way to end poverty. You are not deserting the poor in their despair when you refuse to allow your mind to be filled with pictures of that misery. Poverty can be done away with by increasing the number of poor people whose purpose it is with faith, to get rich, not by increasing the number of wealthy people who think about poverty. The poor do not need charity; they need inspiration. Charity only sends them a loaf of bread to keep them living in their wretchedness. Inspiration on the other hand, causes them to rise out of their misery. If you want to help the poor, demonstrate to them that they can get rich. Prove it to them by first getting rich yourself. The only way in which poverty will ever be banished from this world is by inspiring a large and constantly increasing number of people to put into practice TSOGR. People must be taught to become rich by creation, not by competition. Every man who becomes rich by competition throws down behind him the ladder by which he rises, which keeps others down. Everyone who gets rich by creation opens the way for thousands more to follow and inspires them to do so. You aren’t showing hardness of heart or an uncaring nature when you refuse to pity, view, read about, think about, and talk about poverty, or to listen to people who do. Use your will to keep your mind off of poverty and keep it fixed with faith and purpose on the vision of what you truly desire.


CHAPTER 10

Further Use Of Your Will

You cannot retain a true and clear vision of wealth if you constantly turn your attention to opposing pictures, external or imaginary. Do not talk about your past financial troubles (if you have had them), try not to think of them at all. Don’t talk about the poverty or hardships of your early life. When you do, you mentally class yourself with the poor for the time being, which halts the movement of the things you desire in your direction. Put poverty and all things that pertain to it behind you. You have accepted a certain theory of the universe as being correct and are resting your hopes of happiness on it being correct. What can you possibly gain by giving heed to conflicting theories? Do not read religious books that tell you the world is coming to an end, or read the writings of critical and cynical philosophers who write about the world going to hell. The world is not going to hell; it is going to the Creator and becoming wonderful. There may be many existing conditions that are disagreeable, but why study them when they are passing away? Studying them only tends to slow their passing down and keeps them with us. Why give your time and attention to things that are being removed by evolutionary growth, when you can hasten their removal by promoting your evolutionary growth of wealth and prosperity? No matter how horrible the conditions are in certain countries, you are wasting your time and destroying your own chances by considering them. You should interest yourself in the world becoming rich. Think of the riches the world is coming into, instead of the poverty it is growing out of. The only way you can assist the world in growing rich is by getting rich yourself by the creative method. Give your attention wholly to riches and ignore poverty. Whenever you think or speak of those people who are poor, do it as people who are becoming rich; who are to be congratulated instead of pitied. Then they and others will catch the inspiration and begin to search for a way out. Just because I say to spend most of your leisure time thinking about getting rich, I don’t mean you are to be cheap or selfish. To become rich is the noblest aim you can have in life for it includes everything else. But on the competitive plane, the struggle to get rich is a Godless scramble for power over others. When you come into the creative mind, all that is changed. All that is possible in the way of greatness and soul development, of service and lofty endeavors, come from getting rich; all is made possible by the use of things. If you lack for physical health, you will find that the attainment of health is conditional upon your getting rich. Only those who are liberated from financial worry, have the means to live a carefree existence, and follow good sanitary practices, can have and maintain good health.


Moral and spiritual greatness is only possible to those who are above the competitive conflict for existence. Only those who are becoming rich on the plane of creative thought are free from the degrading influences of competition. If you desire to be happy, happiness flourishes best where there is refinement, a high level of thought, and freedom from corrupting influences. These things are found only where riches are attained by the exercise of creative thought, without strife and/or rivalry. You can aim at nothing so great or noble, as to become rich. You must focus on your mental picture of riches and exclude everything that dims or obscures your vision. You must learn to see the underlying truth in all things, see beneath all seemingly wrong conditions, and see your great life moving forward toward a fuller expression and complete happiness. Truthfully, there is no such thing as poverty, only wealth. People remain poor because they are ignorant of the fact that there is abundant wealth for them too. This can best be taught by showing them the way to affluence in your own life. Many people are poor because while they acknowledge that there is a way out, they are too intellectually lazy to put forth the mental effort necessary to find and travel it. The very best thing you can do for these people is to arouse their desire by showing them the happiness in you that comes from being rightfully rich. Also, people are poor because while they have some concept of TSOGR, they have become so swamped and lost in the maze of different theories, they don’t know which road to take. They try a mixture of many methods and fail in all. The best way to help these people is to show them the right way in your own life. An ounce of doing things is worth a pound of theorizing. The very best thing you can do for the whole world is to make the most of and for yourself. You can serve God and mankind in no better way than by getting rich. This is the exact formula in detail. If it works for you, you won’t need to read other books on the subject. There is one scientific method of computation in mathematics; addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. There is no other method that we know about. The shortest distance between two points is a straight line, and there is only one way to think scientifically and that is to think in a way that leads by the most direct route to the goal. Nobody has yet formulated a briefer, less complex system than the one you have in this book for getting rich. It has been stripped of all non-essential BS.

If you decide to follow this formula, lay aside all other ideas. Put them out of your mind altogether. Read this book every day for 30 days and keep it with you at all times. Try to commit it to memory. Don’t think about other ways of getting rich. If you do, you will create doubts, be uncertain in your thinking, wavering in your thoughts, and fail to get rich. After you get rich you can study other systems, formulas, and theories, but until you are rich, just read this book. The only exceptions would be the authors mentioned in the preface. Also, do not listen to or read the News. You will never find optimistic comments in the news.

This will allow you to improve your health, while you are learning how to get rich. Listen to these tapes on your way to work, on your way home, when you would normally watch TV, in your spare time, and before you go to sleep. If you read an article or listen to a tape that is not in complete harmony with this book, file it away until you are rich. The preceding chapters have brought us to the following statement of basic facts: There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made and which in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. You can form things in your thoughts. By impressing your thoughts upon formless stuff, you can cause the thing you think about to be created. In order to do this, you must pass from the competitive to the creative mind. You must form a clear mental picture of the things you desire, hold this picture in your thoughts with the fixed purpose to get what you desire, and possess the unwavering FAITH that you are getting what you desire, closing your mind against all that may tend to shake your purpose, dim your vision, or attempt to reduce your faith. In addition to this, you shall now see that you must live and act in a Certain Way.


CHAPTER 11

Acting in a Certain Way Thought is the moving force that causes the creative power to act. Thinking in a Certain Way will bring riches to you, but you cannot rely on thought alone, paying no attention to your personal actions. That is the rock upon which many otherwise scientific thinkers become shipwrecked; they fail to connect thought with personal action. We have not yet reached the stage of development (even supposing such a stage is possible), where we can create directly from Formless Stuff without nature's processes, or the work of our hands. You must not only think, your personal actions must support your thoughts. Thought causes the gold in the mountains to be moved toward you, but it will not mine it, refine it, coin it into double eagles and give them to you. Under the impelling power of the Supreme Spirit, some people’s affairs will be so ordered that they will be led to mine the gold for you, and some people's business transactions will be so directed that the gold will be brought toward you. But, you must arrange your affairs so that you are able to receive it when it comes to you. Your thoughts create things, animate and inanimate, working to bring you what you desire. But, your personal activity must be such that you can rightfully receive it when it reaches you. Do not accept it as charity, or steal it. You must give people more in use value than they give you in cash value. The scientific use of thought consists of forming a clear and distinct mental image of what you want; of holding fast to the purpose to get what you want, and of realizing with grateful faith that you will get what you desire. Don’t try to “project” your thoughts in any mysterious way, with the idea of having them go out and do things for you. That is wasted effort. It weakens your power to think rationally. The action of thought in getting rich was explained in the preceding chapters. Your faith and purpose positively impress your vision upon Formless Stuff, which has the same desire for more life for you than you currently have. This vision received from you, sets all the creative forces to work in and through their regular channels of action, but directed toward you. It is not your job to guide or supervise the creative process. All you have to do is retain your vision, stick to your purpose, and maintain your faith with sincere gratitude. You must act in a Certain Way, so you can accept what is yours when it comes to you, meet the things you have in your vision, and put them in their proper place as they arrive. Can you see the truth of this? When things reach you, they will be in the hands of other people who will ask an equivalent for them. You can only get what is yours by giving other people what is theirs. Your kettle is not going to be transformed into a pot full of gold without any effort on your part. This is the crucial point in TSOGR, thought and personal action must be combined.


There are many people who consciously or unconsciously, set the creative forces into action by the strength and persistence of their desires, but remain poor because they do not provide for the reception of the things they desire as they come to them. By thought, the things you desire are brought to you; by action you receive them. Whatever your action is to be, it is evident that you must start acting now. You cannot act in the past. It is essential to the clearness of your mental vision that you dismiss the past from your mind. You cannot act in the future; the future is not here yet. Plus, you don’t know how you would want to act in a future contingency, until it arrives. You may not be in the right business or the right environment, but don’t think that you must postpone your actions until you get in the right business or environment. Do not waste time thinking about the best course to take in any possible future emergency. Have faith in your ability to meet an emergency when it arrives. If you act in the present with your mind on the future, your present action will be with a divided mind, and will not be effective. Put your entire mind into your present actions. Do not even think about giving your creative impulses to Original Substance and then wait for the results; you will not get them. Take action now. There is no time but now. There never will be any time but now. If you are ever to begin to make ready for the reception of what you want, you must do it now. Your action, whatever it is, must most likely be in your present business or employment and must be upon the persons and things in your present environment. You cannot act where you are not, or where you have been, or where you are going to be. You can only act where you are now. Here is a list of things not to do:

• Do not concern yourself as to whether you did yesterday's work well; do today's work well.

• Do not try to do tomorrow's work today; there will be plenty of time for you to do it tomorrow.

• Do not try by occult or mystical means to act on people or things that are out of reach. • Do not wait for a change of your environment before you act; you can change your

environment by changing your actions. You can so act upon the environment in which you are now, as to cause yourself to be transferred into a better environment.

• Hold with faith and purpose the vision of yourself in a better environment, but act upon your present environment with all your heart, strength, and mind.

• Do not waste your time daydreaming or castle building; hold to the vision of what you desire and act now.

• Do not look for something new to do, or some strange, unusual, or remarkable action to take as your first step to getting rich. It is probable that your actions, at least for the time being, will be the ones you have been performing for some time; but starting today, start performing them in a Certain Way that will surely make you rich.


• If you are engaged in a business and feel that it is not right for you, do not wait until you get into the right business before you take action.

• Do not feel discouraged or complain because you are misplaced. Nobody was ever so misplaced but that he couldn’t find the right place. No one ever became so involved in the wrong business that he couldn’t get into the right business. Hold the vision of yourself in the right business, with the burning purpose to get into it, and have faith that you will get into it, are getting into it; but act in your present profession. Use your present profession as the means of getting a better profession, and use your present environment as the means of getting into a better environment. Your vision of the right profession, if held with faith and purpose, will cause the Supreme to move the right profession toward you, and your action, if performed in a Certain Way, will cause you to move toward that profession.

• If you are an employee and feel that you must change places in order to get what you desire, do not 'project" your thoughts into space and rely upon them to get you another job. They will most likely fail to do so. Hold the vision of yourself in the job you desire, while you act with faith and purpose on the job you have, and you will surely get the job you want. Your vision and faith will set the creative forces into motion to bring it toward you. Your actions will cause the forces in your own environment to move you toward the job you want.

In closing this chapter, we will add one other statement to our syllabus: There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made and which in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this substance produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. You can form things in your thoughts, and by impressing your thoughts upon formless stuff; you can cause the thing you think about to be created. In order to do this, you must pass from the competitive to the creative mind, form a clear mental picture of the things you desire, and hold this picture in your thoughts with the fixed purpose to get them. You must have unwavering faith that you get what you want, closing your mind to all that may tend to shake your purpose, dim your vision, or diminish your faith. So that you may receive what you desire when it comes, you must act now upon the people and things in your present environment.


CHAPTER 12

Efficient Action

You must use your thoughts as directed previously by doing all you can do, right where you are right now. You can advance only by being larger than your present place. You are not larger than your present place when you leave any work undone, pertaining to that place. Only people, who more than fill their present place, advance the world. If you do not quite fill your present place, you’re going backward in everything. Those people who do not quite fill their present place are dead weight upon society, government, commerce, and industry. Others must carry them along at a great expense. People, who do not fill their place, retard the progress of the world, and belong to a former age and a lower plane of life. Their tendency is toward degeneration. Society would collapse, if everybody were smaller than their place. Social evolution is guided by the law of physical and mental evolution. When an organism has more life than can be expressed in the functions of it’s own plane, it develops the organs of a higher plane, and a new species is formed. There never would have been new species had there not been organisms that more than filled their places. The law is exactly the same for you. Getting rich depends upon you applying this principle to your own affairs. Everyday is either a successful day or a failure. By having an abundance of successful days, you will get what you want. If everyday is a failure, you will never get what you want. If everyday is a success, you will certainly get rich. If there is something that can be done today and you don’t do it, you have failed insofar as that thing is concerned. The consequences of failing to do that day what you could have done may be a lot more disastrous than you can ever imagine. You cannot foresee the results of even the most trivial act because you do not know the workings of all the forces that have been set into motion on your behalf. Much may be depending on you doing some simple act that opens the door of opportunity to great possibilities. You never know all the combinations that Supreme Intelligence is making for you in the world of things, and human affairs. Your neglect or failure to do some small task may cause a long delay in getting what you desire. So do every day all that you can do, but do not overwork or rush blindly into your tasks in an effort to do the greatest number of tasks in the shortest time. Do not do tomorrow's work today, or do a week's work in one day. It is really not the number of tasks you do, but the efficiency of each separate action that counts. Every act is, in itself, either a success or a failure. Every act is in itself, either successful or unsuccessful. Every unsuccessful act is a failure. If you spend the rest of your life doing unsuccessful acts, you will fail to get rich. The more things you do, the worse for you, if most of your tasks are unsuccessful. On the other hand, if every act is a success, you must be a success. The cause of failure is doing too many things in an unsuccessful manner, and not doing enough things in a successful manner. It is a self-evident proposition that if you do not do any unsuccessful acts, plus do a sufficient number of successful acts; you will get rich. Is it possible for you to make each act a successful one? Yes you can. Getting rich is thus reduced to an exact science, just like the science of mathematics.


The matter then turns on the question of whether you can make each separate act a success unto itself. You can, because all power is working with you and all power cannot fail. Power is at your service. To make each act successful, you have to put power into it. Every action is either strong or weak. When it is strong, you are acting in a Certain Way that will make you rich. Every act can be made stronger and more effective by holding your vision while you are doing the act, and putting the whole power of your faith and purpose into it. It is at this point those people who fail, separate mental power from personal action! They use the power of the mind in one place and at one time, and then act in another place, and at another time. So their actions are not successful in themselves because most of their actions are ineffective. But if all power goes into every act, no matter how commonplace, every act will be a success in itself; and as in the nature of things, every success opens the way to additional successes. Your progress toward what you want, and the progress of what you want flowing toward you, increases. Successful action is cumulative in its results. Since the desire for more life is inherent in all things, when you begin to move toward larger life, more things attach themselves to you, and the influence of your desires are multiplied. Every day, do all that you can do that day, and do every act in a successful manner. Hold your vision while you are doing each act, however trivial or commonplace. I’m not saying that it is necessary at all times to see your vision distinctly to its smallest detail. But, use your leisure hours to imagine the details of your vision, and to contemplate them until they are firmly memorized in your mind. If you desire speedy results, spend most of your spare time visualizing the details of your vision, as well as memorizing them. By continuous contemplation you will get the picture of what you desire. Visualize even the smallest detail so firmly fixed in your mind, and so completely transferred to the mind of Formless Stuff, that in your working hours you only need to mentally refer to the picture to stimulate your faith and purpose. This will cause your best effort to be put forth. Contemplate your picture in your leisure hours until your consciousness is so full of it that you can grasp it instantly. You will become so enthused with its bright promises that the mere thought of it will call forth the strongest energies of your whole being. Let’s repeat our syllabus and slightly change the closing statements to bring it to the point we have now reached: There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made and which, in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this substance, produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. You can form things in your thought. By impressing your thought upon formless stuff, you can cause the thing you think about to be created. CHAPTER 13

Getting Into The Right Business

Success in any business primarily depends on you having a well-developed talent that is required for that business. For instance, without excellent musical talents, you cannot be a successful music teacher; without good mechanical talents, you cannot achieve great success in any of the mechanical trades; without diplomacy and commercial talents, you cannot succeed in business. Having great talent in your current occupation does not insure you will get rich. There are many musicians with remarkable talent, who remain poor. Thousands of plumbers and carpenters, with exceptional mechanical talent, do not get rich. Millions of merchants with a great knack for dealing with people fail in business. Talents are tools. It is essential to have good tools, but it is more essential that the tools be used in the Right Way. One man can take a sharp saw, plane and level, and build a fine looking table. Another man can take the same tools and make an awful looking table because he does not know how to use the tools in a successful way. The various talents of your mind are the tools with which you must do the work that will make you rich. It will be easier to succeed if you get into a business where you are well equipped with good mental tools. Generally speaking, you will do best in a business that uses your strongest talents; one where you are naturally "best fitted." There are limitations to that statement. Do not regard your occupation as being irrevocably fixed by the tendencies that you were born with. You can get rich in any business. If you don’t have the right talent, you can develop it. That means you will have to make your tools as you go, instead of confining yourself to only those tools that you were born with. It will be easier to succeed in a field for which you already have talents in a well-developed state, but you can succeed in any field. You can develop any rudimentary talent. There is no talent that you do not have at least some rudiment knowledge. You will get rich most easily in point of effort, if you do something for which you are best fitted; but you will get rich most satisfactorily by doing something that you truly enjoy. Getting rich doing what you really enjoy is heavenly. There is no satisfaction in living when you are compelled to work at a job you do not like, instead of doing what you truly enjoy. You can do what you want to do; the desire to do it is proof that you have within you, the power to do it. Desire is an expression of power. The desire to play music is the power that can play music seeking expression and development. The desire to invent mechanical devices is the mechanical talent seeking expression and development. Where there is no power, either developed or undeveloped to do something, there is no desire to do that thing. Where there is strong desire to do something, that is sure proof that the power to do it is strong. It only requires developing and applying that desire, in the Right Way. All things being equal, it is best to select an occupation where you have the best developed talent; but if you have a strong desire to engage in a particular occupation, you should select that occupation as the ultimate end for which you aim. You can do what you desire to do. It is your right and privilege to follow the path that will be most congenial and pleasant to you.


You do not have to do what you do not like to do. You should not do what you do not like to do, except as a means to bring you closer to doing what you enjoy doing. If there are past mistakes whose consequences have placed you in an undesirable environment, you may be obliged to do what you do not like to do for awhile; but you can make the doing of it more pleasant by knowing that doing it in a Certain Way is making it possible for you to come toward doing what you really want to do. If you feel that you are not in the right occupation, do not act hastily in trying to get into another one. The best way to change jobs or environment is by growth.

Do not be afraid to make a sudden and radical change if the right opportunity presents itself, and you feel after careful consideration, it is definitely right for you. But, do not make a sudden decision or take radical action, if you have any doubts. There is never any hurry or lack of opportunity on the creative plane. Whenever you stop thinking competitively, you will understand that you never need to act hastily. No one is going to beat you to the thing you want to do; there is still plenty for all. If one space is taken, a better one will open up; there is plenty of time. When in doubt, wait; fall back, contemplate your vision, and increase your faith and purpose. In times of doubt and indecision, cultivate your gratitude. A day or two contemplating the vision of what you want, in earnest thanksgiving will bring your mind into such close relationship with the Supreme that you will not make a mistake when you act upon your thoughts.

There is a mind that knows all there is to know. You can come in close unity with this mind by faith and the purpose to advance life, if you are sincerely grateful. Mistakes come from acting hastily, acting in fear, doubt, or from forgetfulness of the right motive, which is more life to all and less to none. As you continue in a Certain Way, opportunities will come to you in increasing number. You will need to be very steady in your faith and purpose and keep in close touch with the Creator in reverent gratitude. Do all you can do in a perfect manner everyday, but not in haste, worry, or fear. Go as fast as you can, but do not hurry. The moment you begin to hurry, you cease to be a creator. You become a competitor and drop back to the old plane. Whenever you find yourself hurrying, call a halt. Fix your attention on the mental image of the things you truly desire, and begin to give thanks that you are getting them. The exercise of gratitude never fails to strengthen your faith and renew your purpose.


CHAPTER 14

The Impression of Increase Whether or not you change occupations, your actions for the present must be those pertaining to your current occupation. You can get into the field you want by making constructive use of the business you are already in, by doing your daily job in a Certain Way. If your business deals with people, the key-thought of all your efforts must be to convey to their minds, the impression of increase, which is what everyone is seeking. It is the urge of the Formless Intelligence within them, seeking fuller expression. The desire for increase is inherent in all of nature. It is the fundamental impulse of the universe. All human activities are based on the desire for increase. People are seeking more food, more clothes, better shelter, more luxury, more beauty, more knowledge, more pleasure; an increase in more life. Every living thing is under this necessity for continuous advancement. Where increase of life ceases, dissolution and death set in at once. Man instinctively knows this and hence is forever seeking more. Only those who gain more, retain more. The normal desire for increased wealth is not evil. It is simply the desire for more abundant life and hope. Because it is the deepest instinct of mankind’s nature, mankind is attracted to Him, who can give more of the means of life. By following a Certain Way, you are getting continuous increase for yourself and giving it to all with whom you deal. You are a creative center from which increase is given off to all. Be sure of this and convey assurance of this fact to every person you meet; no matter how small the transaction, even selling candy to a child. Put into every transaction the thought of increase and make sure that the customer is impressed with the thought. Convey the impression of advancement with everything you do, so that all people shall receive the impression that you are Advancing Mankind, and that you advance all who deal with you. Even the people you meet socially, without any thought of business, and to whom you do not try to sell anything, think of increase for them too. You can convey this impression by holding the unshakable faith that you are in the way of increase, and by letting this faith inspire, fill, and permeate your every action. Do everything you do in the firm conviction that you are an advancing personality, and that you are giving advancement to everyone you meet. Feel that you are getting rich and in doing so are making others rich too, conferring benefits to all. Do not boast, brag about your success, or talk about it unnecessarily. True faith is never boastful. Boastful people are doubtful and afraid. Simply feel the faith and make it a part of every transaction. Let every act, tone and look, express the quiet assurance that you are getting rich.


Words will not be necessary to communicate this feeling to others. They will feel the sense of increase in your presence and will be attracted to you. You must so impress others that they will feel that by associating with you, they will get increase for themselves. Give them a use value that is greater than the cash value you take from them. Take pride in doing this, let everyone know it, and you will have plenty of customers. People go where they get increase. The Supreme, which desires increase in all, which knows all, will move toward you, and your business will increase rapidly. You will be surprised at the unexpected benefits that come to you. You will be able to make larger combinations, secure greater advantages, and go into a more pleasant occupation, if you desire. Never lose sight of the vision of what you want, or diminish your faith and purpose to get what you want. A word of caution in regard to motives: beware of the insidious temptation to seek power over others. Nothing is so pleasant to the unformed or partially developed mind as the exercise of power or dominion over others. The desire to rule for selfish gratification has been the curse of the world. Kings and lords have drenched the earth with blood in their battles to extend their dominions; not to seek more life for all, but to get more power for themselves. Today, the main motive in business is the same. Many people assemble their army of dollars and lay waste the lives and hearts of millions of people in the same mad scramble for power over others. Commercial kings like political kings are inspired by the lust for power. Avoid the temptation to seek authority, become a "master," to be considered as one who is above the common people, or to impress others by lavish display. The mind that seeks mastery over others is the competitive mind. In order to master your environment and destiny, it is not necessary that you rule over others. When you fall into the world's struggle for high places, you start to be conquered by fate and environment. Getting rich then becomes a matter of chance and speculation. Beware of the competitive mind! No better statement of the principle of creative action can be formulated than the following one: "What I want for myself, I want for everyone."


CHAPTER 15

The Advancing Man What was said in the last chapter applies to everyone, regardless of their occupation. If you can give increase of life to others and make them wise of the fact, they will be attracted to you and you will get rich. Physicians who hold the vision of themselves as great and successful healers, who work toward the complete realization of that vision with faith and purpose as described earlier, will come into such close touch with the Source of Life, that they will be phenomenally successful and patients will come to them in droves.

Nobody has a greater opportunity to carry into effect this formula than healing practitioners of medicine. It does not matter which of the various schools of medicine they may belong, for the principle of healing is common to all, and may be reached by all alike. The Advancing Doctors in medicine, who hold a clear mental image of themselves as successful doctors, who obey the laws of faith and purpose, who show reverent gratitude, will cure every curable case they undertake, no matter what remedies they may use.

In the field of religion, the world cries out for preachers who can teach their congregation the true science of abundant life. Those who master this formula, together with the allied sciences of being well, being great, and winning love, who teach this information from the pulpit, will never lack for a huge congregation. This is the gospel the world needs. It will give increase of life and people will gladly hear it. It will give great support to the preacher that brings this message to them. What the world needs is a display of the science of life from the pulpit. We need preachers who not only can tell their congregation how to do it, but who can also show them how to get rich. We need preachers who get rich, healthy, great, and beloved, and teach their congregation how to attain these things. When they come, they will find an abundant and loyal following.

The same is true of teachers who can inspire children with the faith and purpose of advancing life. These teachers will never be "out of work." Any teacher who has this faith and purpose can give it to their pupils. They can’t help giving it to them, if it is a part of their own life and practice. What is true of these examples is true of everybody.

The combined mental and personal action is infallible; it cannot fail. Everyone who follows these instructions steadily, perseveringly, and to the letter, will get rich. The “Law Of Increase” is as scientifically certain in its operation as the “Law Of Gravity”. Getting rich is an exact science. The common employee will find this just as true in his case as in any job mentioned. Do not feel that you have no chance to get rich because you are working where there is no visible opportunity for progress; or where your wages are small and the cost of living is high. Form a clear mental vision of what you desire and begin to act with deep faith and purpose.


Do all the work you can do everyday and do each task in a successful manner. Put the power of success and the purpose to get rich into everything you do; not to gain favor with your employer hoping that those above you will see your good work and advance you. It is not likely to happen. If you are a "good" worker, filling your place to the best of your ability and you are satisfied with that, you are valuable. It’s not in your employer's interest to promote you; you are worth more to him where you are. For you to advance, something more is necessary than to be too large for your place. You are certain to advance if you are too big for your place, and have a perfectly clear concept of what you want to be. You must know that you can become what you desire to be, only with steadfast determination.

Instead of more than filling your present place trying to please your employer, do it with the idea of advancing yourself. Hold the faith and purpose of increase before work, at work, and after work. Hold it in such a way that every person you come in contact with, whether foreman, fellow worker, or social acquaintance, feels the power of purpose radiating from you, so that everyone gets the sense of advancement and increase from you. People will be attracted to you. If there is no possibility for advancement in your present field, you will see an opportunity to accept something better very soon.

There is a power that never fails to present opportunity to the person who is moving in obedience to this formula. The Creator cannot help, helping you if you act in a Certain Way. He must do so in order to help Himself. There is nothing in your circumstances or situation that can hold you back. If you cannot get rich working for General Mills or General Motors, you can most certainly get rich working for yourself. If you begin to move in a Certain Way, you will escape from the "clutches" of your employer; start your own business, create your own product(s) or service(s), or do whatever you want to do.

If thousands of employees began to act in a Certain Way, many companies would have to start giving their employees more opportunities, or go out of business. Nobody has to work for an employer. Employers keep people in hopeless conditions only as long as the people are ignorant about how to get rich, or if they are too lazy to practice it. Begin thinking and acting in a Certain Way and your faith and purpose will quickly find new ways to better your current condition. Opportunities will come to you because the Supreme, working in all and for all, will bring them to you.

Do not wait for an opportunity to be everything you want to it be. When an opportunity to be more than you are now is presented, and you feel driven toward it, accept it, and it will be the first step toward a greater opportunity. There is no such thing as a lack of opportunity for people who are living the advancing life. It is inherent in the constitution of the cosmos that all things shall be for everyone and work together for their good. So let all employees read this book with great care and enter with confidence upon the course of action it prescribes. I give you my personal guarantee; it will not fail you.


CHAPTER 16

Some Cautions and Final Observations Some people scoff at the idea that there is an exact science for getting rich. They believe the supply of wealth is limited, and insist that social and government institutions must be changed before a considerable number of people can acquire the ability to get rich. That’s nonsense! Government keeps the masses in poverty because they do not think and act in a Certain Way. If the masses start to move forward, no government or corporation can hold them back. All systems must be modified to accommodate the forward movement. If you have the Advancing Mind, the deep faith that you can get rich and move forward with the fixed purpose to become rich, nothing can keep you in poverty. You may begin to act in a Certain Way at any time, under any government, and become rich. When a significant number of people do so, they will cause the system to be so modified as to open the way for others. The more people that get rich on the creative plane, the better it is for others. The economic salvation of the masses can only be accomplished by getting a large number of people to practice this scientific formula and get rich. They will show others the way and inspire them with a desire for real life, with the faith that it can be attained, and with the purpose to attain it. For the present, however, it is enough to know that no government or competitive system of industry can keep you from getting rich. When you enter upon the creative plane of thought, you ascend above all these things and become a citizen of another kingdom. Hold your thoughts on the creative plane. Do not betray yourself by regarding the supply as limited, or by acting on the moral level of competition. Whenever you fall back into your old ways of thought, instantly correct yourself. When you are in the competitive mind, you loose the cooperation of the Mind. Do not spend any time in planning how you will meet possible future emergencies, except as to how key policies may affect your actions now. You are concerned with doing today's work in a successful manner, not with emergencies that may never happen. Attend to them if and when they happen, but do not worry about how you shall overcome obstacles that may loom on the horizon, unless you are sure your course must be altered in order to avoid them. No matter how tremendous an obstruction may appear, if you continue in a Certain Way, it will disappear as you approach it, or a way over it, through it, or around it will appear. No possible combination of circumstances can defeat someone who is proceeding to get rich along scientific lines. No one who obeys these laws can fail to get rich any more than one can multiply two times two and not get four. Give no anxious thought to possible disasters, obstacles, panics, or unfavorable combinations of circumstances. There is time enough to meet these things when they present themselves before you in the immediate present. You will find that every obstacle carries with it a way to overcome it.


Guard your speech. Always speak of yourself, your affairs, or of anything else you talk or think about in an optimistic or encouraging way. Always think about yourself as a successful person, and if times have been hard, or business conditions slow, keep that to yourself. Times may be hard and business doubtful for people on the competitive plane, but not for those on the creative plane. You can create what you desire because you are now above fear. When others are having hard times and business is slow, you will find your greatest opportunities. Train yourself to think of and look upon the world as a something that is becoming and growing. Always speak in terms of advancement; to do otherwise is to deny your faith. To deny your faith is to lose it. People on the creative plane do not allow themselves to feel disappointed. You may expect to have a certain thing at a certain time, and not get it. It may appear like a failure to you, but hold to your faith and the incident is barely noticeable. Continue doing things a Certain Way and if you don’t receive that thing, you will receive something even better. You will realize that the apparent failure was really a great success. A student of this book had set his mind on getting in a certain business, which seemed to him at the time very desirable. He worked hard to make the deal happen. When the crucial time came, the deal fell through in a mysterious way. It was as if some unseen influence was working secretly against him, but he wasn’t disappointed. He thanked God that his desire had been overruled and went steadily on with a grateful mind. A few weeks later, another opportunity appeared. He realized that a Mind that knows more than his had prevented him from losing the greater good by entangling him with the lesser. That is the way every apparent failure will work out, if you keep a deep faith, hold to your purpose, show reverent gratitude, and do everyday all that can be done that day; doing each separate act in a successful manner. When you fail at getting something you want, it is because you haven’t asked for enough. Keep on and something larger than what you were seeking will come to you. You will not fail because you lack the necessary talent to do what you want to do. If you follow the formula in this book, you will develop the talent necessary to do the work. It is not within the scope of this book to deal with the science of cultivating talent. It is as certain and simple as the process of getting rich, but do not hesitate or waver for fear that when you come to any certain place you will fail for lack of ability. Continue on and when you come to that place all the ability you need, will be furnished to you. You can draw upon the Master’s mind for wisdom in meeting the tasks that may be laid upon you. Continue in full faith, and make this book your constant companion, until have mastered Wattle’s formula. While you are getting firmly established in your faith, you will do well to give up most recreations and pleasures. Stay away from places where conflicting ideas are advanced in lectures or sermons. Do not read pessimistic or conflicting literature, and do not argue with anyone about the subject. Do very little reading outside of the writers mentioned in the Preface. Spend your leisure time contemplating your vision, by cultivating sincere gratitude. This book contains everything you will ever need to know about getting rich.


CHAPTER 17

Summary There is a thinking stuff from which all things are made, and which in its original state, permeates, penetrates, and fills the interspaces of the universe. A thought in this stuff produces the thing that is imaged by the thought. You can form things in your thoughts. By impressing your thoughts upon formless stuff, you can cause the thing you think about to be created. In order for you to do this, you must pass from the competitive to the creative mind. Otherwise you will not be in harmony with the Formless stuff, which is always creative. You may come into full harmony with the Formless Stuff by having a reverent and sincere gratitude for the blessings it bestows to you. Gratitude unifies your mind with the intelligence of Substance, so that your thoughts are received by the Formless. You can remain upon the creative plane by uniting yourself with the Formless Stuff through a deep and continuous feeling of gratitude. You must form a clear and definite mental image of the things you desire, the things you want to do, and who you want to become. You must hold this mental image in your thoughts, while being deeply grateful to the Supreme that all your desires are being granted to you. You must spend your leisure hours contemplating your vision in earnest thanksgiving that the reality is being given to you. I cannot stress this point enough. The formula for getting rich is; frequent contemplation of your mental images, coupled with unwavering faith, and intense reverent gratitude. This is the process by which the impression is given to the Formless, It is creative forces set into motion. The creative energy works through the established channels of natural growth. All that is included in your mental images will surely be brought to you when your faith does not waver, and you remain grateful. What you desire will come to you through the ways of established trade and commerce. In order to receive what you want when it comes to you, you must stay active. Your activity must consist of more than filling your present place. You must keep in mind the purpose to get rich, through the realization of your mental images. You must do everyday, all that you can do that day, taking care to do each task in a successful manner. You must give to everyone a use value that exceeds the cash value they receive, so that each transaction makes for more life. You must so hold the Advancing Thought that the impression of increase will be communicated to all with whom you come in contact. Follow this formula and you will certainly get rich. The riches you receive will be in exact proportion to the certainty of your vision, the resolve of your purpose, the steadfastness of your faith, and the depth of your gratitude. This may be the end of the book, but it is definitely not the end of this story. It is my sincere desire that starting today, you have a prosperous and rewarding life.
