UUTTIILLIIZZIINNGG TTEERRRRAAIINN

The battlefield plays an important part in most any conflict. When plan-ning your moves and attacks, you will want to use the terrain to youradvantage. The two most important aspects of the terrain are Cover andElevation.

CCoovveerr

Cover is basically anything on the battlefield that your troops can hidebehind or that will hamper your opponents ability to hit your forces.During your turn, simply move your mouse cursor over a hex to displaythe percentage of cover provided by the hex.

Your opponent will also make use of cover. When planning an attack, youropponent’s cover and related bonus will be displayed when you move themouse cursor over their hex.

1122

FFoorrttiiffyy PPoossiittiioonn – This command will order the unit to fortifytheir position. Fortifying will both decrease the unit’s chance ofbeing hit and increase their ability to hit other targets, butthey will be unable to move while fortified.

EElleevvaattiioonn

Another important aspect of a battlefield is the elevation. You may haveheard of military troops seeking to take the “high-ground”. This is becausehigher ground provides a variety of benefits during conflict, enabling youto better see the approaching enemy and improve your ability to fire atthem.

Conversely, attacking an enemy at a higher elevation puts you at a disad-vantage. Your ability to see them is decreased and firing uphill decreasesyour ability to hit them.

The differences between the heights of attacking units is calculated as aHeight Bonus or Height Penalty, improving/decreasing your chance to hitor be hit. When planning your attacks, select the Attack command andmove your mouse over the enemy units on the map to see how your eleva-tion measures up to theirs.

TTAACCTTIICCSS AANNDD TTRROOOOPPSS

A good General knows his troops and how to use them. This section willdiscuss the different unit types you will have at your command.

1144

The following are some of the most common types of cover to keep an eyeout for while planning your moves.

WWooooddeenn FFeenncceess – There are a variety of wooden fences on the battlefield. These provide an average protection of 5% or 10%.

SSttoonnee WWaallllss – Stone walls can provide light cover. These provide an aver-age protection of 5% or 10%.

LLiigghhtt WWooooddss – Areas with a small concentration of trees can still offersome cover. These provide an average protection of 10%.

MMeeddiiuumm WWooooddss – The greater the number of trees, the greater the cover. These provide an average protection of 20%.

TThhiicckk WWooooddss – Densely populated woods offer significant protection. Theseprovide an average protection of 30%.

WWhheeaatt FFiieellddss – The thick wheat helps conceal units. These provide anaverage protection of 30%.

NNoottee:: Cover can also affect movement. For example, moving through anarea of heavy woods will reduce the distance you can travel, since theterrain is more difficult.

FFllaannkkiinngg

A common goal during battles of the Civil War was to get around the sideof your opponent’s line or “flank” them. Being able to do this provided anumber of possible benefits, including cutting off your opponent, forcingthem to split their attention to multiple fronts, and giving you the abilityto inflict greater damage by hitting more of their exposed troops.

If you are able to maneuver your troops around your opponent’s line, youwill receive a bonus to hit and inflict greater damage. When planning yourattack, you will see the word “Flanked” displayed when mousing overenemy units that you are currently flanking.

By that same token, your enemy will attempt to out flank you and takeadvantage of your vulnerability…so keep your eyes open.

FFoorrttiiffiiccaattiioonn

Fortification is when the unit attempts to secure their location by usingthe surrounding materials to provide cover. This could mean creating bar-ricades, erecting breastworks, or digging in to the ground. Regardless ofthe method, the result is a safer and more secure location.

1166

TTrrooooppss

GGeenneerraall – Generals have no ranged attack, but have specialLeader Abilities to aide your troops and hinder the enemy. They are also capable of charging. If your General is killed, itwill decrease the morale of your entire army.

AArrttiilllleerryy – Artillery has the ability to deliver damage over agreat distance. These are good for attacking distant andapproaching troops, but not well defended against a charge. They are also slow to move and must be fortified to fire.

CCaavvaallrryy – The cavalry are fast moving troops, able to travel thegreatest distance. Fast and deadly, they are good for quick sup-port and flanking moves.

SSoollddiieerrss – Soldiers are the military’s trained infantry troops. They are a solid unit with both mid-ranged movement andattack abilities.

MMiilliittiiaa – The militia are volunteers that have picked up armsand joined the fight. They have the same movement range assoldiers, but a reduced firing range and accuracy.

Manual.qxd 3/31/2005 5:04 PM Page 16

Page 10: Gettysburg manual

1199

LLiinnee FFoorrmmaattiioonn – This aligns your troops into a horizontal battle line. Thisis the primary formation you will use for combat. This formation allowsyou to move only the minimum distance, but you are capable of firing andfortifying.

SSccaatttteerr FFoorrmmaattiioonn – This scatters your troops across a wider area, reduc-ing the chance of being hit from area effect damage from cannons. It also, however, leaves you more susceptible to being flanked. This formationallows you to move only the minimum distance, but leaves you capable offiring and fortifying.

CCoolluummnn FFoorrmmaattiioonn – This formation is primarily for the quick moving oftroops from the back lines to the area of combat. This formation allowsyou the greatest movement, but leaves your troops unable to fire.

GGEENNEERRAALLSS

Many generals remained at the rear of the battles to over see the troopsand coordinate the battle. Other Generals rode out into the fray with theirmen, putting their lives on the line to inspire the troops. What will youdecide to do?

NNoottee:: A leader needs troops to command. If your troops are all killed off, except your leader, you will be unable to complete a mission.

1188

If you have your unit fortify their position, they will receive a reducedchance of being damaged by attacking troops. In addition, they will receivea bonus to their chance to hit opposing troops, due to their ability to taketime to better aim.

It will take one full turn to fortify a position. Once you order them to forti-fy, a partial brick wall will appear around the edge of their hex. Troops thatare fortified will have a brick wall displayed around the edge of their hex.You must unfortify a position before moving. Unfortifying takes one fullturn.

NNoottee 11: Cannons must be fortified in order to fire. This accounts for thesetup time of the cannons, preparing of ammunition, etc.

NNoottee 22: Due to the presence of their horses, the cavalry units are not ableto fortify. The one exception is when they are under the influence of ageneral’s “Fortify” Leader Ability.

FFoorrmmaattiioonnss

Troops move in a variety of specialized configurations, known as forma-tions. When moving your troops, you will want to select your formationcarefully.

Few things on the battlefield are guaranteed. The same is true of using the Leader Ability. Before using your Leader Ability, you willneed to select two of the three cards dis-played on the Leader Ability panel. If youselect the two cards with stars on them, youmay successfully use your Leader Ability. Ifyou select a non-matching pair of cards, onecard with a star and one card with an X, yourattempt to use your ability failed.

Troops can be capable of extraordinary things when inspired bytheir leader. The Leader Ability reflects that. But be careful. If ageneral is killed, the whole army’s morale will be reduced.

To use the Leader Ability, position your general in an adjacent hex toanother unit. Then click the Leader Ability button in the general’s UnitCommand box and select the target unit to bring up the Leader Abilitypanel. This can be used to help friendly troops or hinder enemy units. Theeffects of the Leader Ability last one turn, with the exception of Fortfy andUnfortify.
