The New Workbench and Power ToolsGE Fanuc has always endeavored to balance the acceleration of new features andtechnology with an easy-to-use interface. With HMI 4.01, we greatly simplified projectconfiguration with the introduction of the Workbench.

WorkbenchThe Workbench is patterned after the Microsoft Windows Explorer. The Workbenchwindow is divided into a left and right-hand side. On the left is a folder/file tree thatcontains the Power Tools. By clicking on the appropriate folder or Power Tool on theleft, you can view the corresponding configuration items on the right. For example, byselecting the Screens folder you can view the list of screens configured in the system onthe right. You can navigate down, select a particular Device, and view all of the pointsassociated with it. With the Workbench, you have a new perspective on yourconfiguration offering you more power and flexibility than ever before.

The hierarchy of folders on the left has been designed to organize your Power Tools intomeaningful and time-productive groups. For example, the items such as Devices andPorts that are associated with Device Communications are now logically grouped into afolder. Once these are configured, you may never need those tools again. That sub-treecan then be closed and you can put away those tools. As another example, the variousalarm configuration tools are now logically grouped together in a sub-folder.

Drag and DropThe intuitive layout of the Workbench provides a great benefit for reviewing andunderstanding your project’s configuration. But the great ease-of-use improvementsdon’t stop there! We have designed the Workbench with drag-and-drop capabilities. From the list of configured points you can simply drag and drop the points of interest intothe CIMPLICITY Point Control Panel or create a Quick Trend. Developing, testing, andmaintaining your projects has never been easier.

Changing, evolving, improving - With CIMPLICITY HMI the Best just keeps gettingBetter!

Basic / Advanced Point ConfigurationWhen you have the most powerful and sophisticated HMI software package available onthe market, that power can sometimes be overwhelming to the first time user. For thisreason we have introduced Basic / Advanced Point. This feature provides a toggle modesuch that when in Basic mode you are only presented with the configuration fields which

are required to collect and alarm for a point. This mode reduces the number of possibleconfiguration fields you see from approximately 64 down to 14! But in doing this we didnot strip out any of the power behind CIMPLICITY HMI. All that power is stillavailable by simply toggling the configuration over to Advanced Mode. In AdvancedMode you obtain access to all of the point configuration capabilities.

Progressive DisclosureAs part of the Basic / Advanced Point Configuration changes we have also introduced aconcept which we call “Progressive Disclosure”. Progressive Disclosure is another wayof simplifying Point Configuration. As you enter configuration information into thedisplayed fields, CIMPLICITY HMI will automatically display additional configurationfields to you if appropriate. For example, if you select that you want to log informationon a point then additional fields are displayed allowing you to select logging criteria.

New Power ToolsCIMPLICITY HMI’s new power tools provide you with even more functionality for yourmost demanding applications.

CIMPLICITY Action CalendarThe CIMPLICITY Action Calendar is a new Power Tool option that allows you toimplement calendar based control operations. With the Action Calendar you candynamically create, maintain, and execute a calendar schedule of manufacturing eventsand corresponding actions. With the Action Calendar, you can turn on lights, heat, andequipment based on a schedule, which you configure and maintain through simple pointand click actions.

Action Calendar Configuration and OperationConfiguration of the Action Calendar is easy. The Action Calendar allows you to definedifferent types of days – production, weekend, holidays, to conform to your 4-day or 5day workweeks, etc. You can then configure manufacturing control events you want tooccur on a particular type of day and the time they should occur. You then simplyassociate days on the calendar with a particular type of day. The Action Calendar then

CIMPLICITY HMI Version 4.01 – The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!

GFK-1189N Page 6

executes the events and actions you have specified. Want to change a schedule? Noproblem. The Action Calendar accepts dynamic changes or overrides to your schedule.

Action Calendar BenefitsHow do you measure the benefits of a feature that no other competitor offers? – Savingtime and money is one way. Through the CIMPLICITY Action Calendar’s simple pointand click configuration interface, you can easily setup a schedule of events to be executedthroughout the day. With the competition – specialized programming would be requiredto match the Action Calendar’s functionality. The CIMPLICITY Action Calendar savesyou considerable time in configuring your system, but it does not stop there. You savetime every day with the ability to easily alter your schedule to meet your productionneeds. And we all know that in today’s world, time is money!

The CIMPLICITY Action Calendar allows you to cut operating expenses. With theAction Calendar, you can cut energy costs by adjusting manufacturing and facilitysupport equipment to the production schedule. Turn lights and heat on and off based onuser defined work, weekend, or holiday schedules. Adapt your production operations toflexible work shifts. The Action Calendar helps you cut costs and improve productivity. You can optimize your production or maintenance activities by scheduling calendar-based events to occur according to a schedule which you pre-define and control.

The CIMPLICITY Action Calendar is yet another reason why CIMPLICITY HMI standsabove the competition. No other package offers the ability to define a flexible calendar toexecute scheduled actions to the production floor. CIMPLICITY HMI and the ActionCalendar – another example of how the Best just keeps getting Better!

Action Calendar – What do I Purchase? The Action Calendar Power Tool is sold as an option for CIMPLICITY HMI Servers andViewers. The Action Calendar is installed on HMI Servers where you want the control tooccur. In addition, the Action Calendar can be purchased for HMI Viewers to allow theschedule to be reviewed or modified remotely. The Action Calendar will allow scheduleconfiguration changes from Development and Runtime Systems on both HMI Serversand Viewers.

System SentryThe CIMPLICITY System Sentry is a new Power Tool option which is available onWindows NT based systems. Running continuously in the background, the SystemSentry is always monitoring the status of your system. The System Sentry will monitorboth your CIMPLICITY processes as well as key operating system and networkparameters.

The System Sentry is a revolutionary tool in the HMI and SCADA world. If you are anexperienced user of monitoring and control systems, at one time or another you probablywondered how you could establish a baseline of your system’s operation and compare itto current operations. Now you can do this with the System Sentry. If you make changes

GFK-1189N Page 7

or modifications to your system such as adding new devices, points, or alarms, the impacton system performance can be directly measured and monitored.

CIMPLICITY parameters and statistics such as alarm frequency, device communications, data collection and throughput, inter-process communications, data logging, pointmanagement, and user registration are all monitored and recorded. In addition to thistype of information from CIMPLICITY, critical information from the operating systemand network such as CPU performance, memory consumption, NetBEUI connections, process time, etc. can also be monitored recorded to provide you a complete and up todate status on the health of your system.

With the System Sentry, you can monitor changes, which occur to your system over time. You can benchmark how your system is operating when implemented and determine theimpact of changes as your system evolves.

As an added bonus, we are now including a copy of the System Sentry with every newpurchase of a Basic, Premier, and Premier Plus Support Package. If you experienceproblems with your system, the System Sentry will allow our CIMPLICITY Helpdesk toquickly analyze and diagnose what may be the root cause of your problems.

Let’s face it. As the size and complexity of your system grows, isn’t it nice to know it isnow monitoring its own health so you are aware of potential problems? The SystemSentry – another example of how the Best just keeps getting Better!

System Sentry – What do I Purchase? The System Sentry option module is purchased for any CIMPLICITY Server node inyour system, from which you wish want to monitor or view your systems statusinformation.

ReportManager™Report Manager is a newPower Tool option forCIMPLICITY HMI 4.01 thatprovides a simple and uniquesolution to your basic reporting needs. What makes Report Manger unique is that itfunctions without a database. You pre-configure the reports you want produced on atimed or event basis and Report Manager will run in the background collecting andformatting the data for your report(s). Report Manager provides you with a suite ofprograms that easily accommodate your process related reports.

While Report Manager works independently without a database, CIMPLICITY HMI stillsupports full data logging through ODBC to Microsoft SQL Server, Access or Oracledatabases satisfying your most demanding reporting needs.

Report Manager – What Do I Purchase?Report Manager has two components - The Report Manager Suite and the IntegratedReport Viewer. The Report Manager Suite is purchased for Servers where you wish togenerate reports. This part of the software allows you to configure the reports you wishto see, gathers the requested data from CIMPLICITY HMI as it is collected, and placesthe collected data into the report(s). In addition, the Report Manager Suite includes anIntegrated Report Viewer that is the part of the software that displays your configuredreports. Therefore, for HMI Servers that will be generating reports, the Report ManagerSuite is all that is required.

The Integrated Report Viewer is an option for HMI Viewers or for HMI Servers that wishto see reports generated by another HMI Server running the Report Manager Suite. TheIntegrated Report Viewer provides a window that allows you to call-up and review any ofthe reports which have been generated by the Report Manager Suite.

If your application requires fixed types of reports to be generated on a timed or eventbasis, then Report Manager can provide your solution. It is important to understand thatwhile Report Manager is a powerful and flexible option, it is not appropriate for allreporting application needs. Since it does not operate off a database, ad hoc queries arenot supported. If your reporting applications will require ad hoc queries, thenCIMPLICITY Data Logging to a Microsoft SQL Server, Microsoft Access, or Oracledatabase would be the appropriate approach.

SmartObjects™Version 4.01 introduces SmartObjects within an Object Framework that extends theCOM (Component Object Model) based design of CIMPLICITY HMI to a new level. Both creation and maintenance of your system will be easier with the new technologyprovided by this feature. With SmartObjects you can create objects that can easily bedragged and dropped from the CIMPLICITY Object Explorer into your screens. Whendropped, you can then be automatically prompted for required configuration informationsuch as the points to associate to the animation of the object.

The new technology provided by SmartObjects includes:

Linked ObjectsLinked Objects save system designers valuable time by providing them with the ability tochange a single object and have those changes reflected throughout the system. WithLinked Objects, you create a master object. As you create new screens, you referencethis object. If you ever want to change the object, you simply modify the master and thenlet CIMPLICITY HMI finish the job by updating every screen with a link to the masterobject in the entire project. With linked objects, you can easily create templates, whichcan be used over and over again reducing system design and maintenance costs.

CIMPLICITY HMI Version 4.01 – The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!

GFK-1189N Page 11

Linked ScriptsLinked Scripts are similar to Linked Objects. If you associate a script to a master object, the script is carried through to each screen that references it. If you ever need to changethe script, the changes will then be reflected through to all of the reference screens.

Object ModelThe Object Model is a new and unique feature that provides an extensive externalprogramming interface for CimEdit and CimView. The Object Model provides you withthe ability to programmatically create and modify any screen with the same capabilitiesprovided from CimEdit. The Object Model also allows you to have complete control ofCimView from either a script embedded in CimView or from any Visual BasicApplication. For system integrators looking for a way to greatly reduce the time requiredto create new systems based off of design and requisition data, the Object Model providescapabilities never before seen in any HMI product.

Quick TrendsHow often have you had a problem in your process and thought to yourself, “I wish Icould just pull up a trend on this process variable and watch what is going on.” WithCIMPLICITY Quick Trends, your wish is a reality. With Quick Trends a trend chart isonly a point and click away! From within CimView you can select any point that isincluded in the screen and have a Quick Trend pop up for the point associated with theobject. From the new CIMPLICITY Workbench or the Point Control Panel you cansimply select points you want to trend and have a Quick Trend pop up and show you howthose points are changing.

System PointsCIMPLICITY HMI extends the number of pre-defined system points to include a widevariety of topics including alarms, date and time, project, and computer information.System points increase your development productivity by exposing internal systeminformation to you. Since this information is exposed as CIMPLICITY points, it can beused by the standard CIMPLICITY HMI components such as CimView, CimEdit, andthe Basic Control Engine.

CIMPLICITY was built from the ground up to handle the most demanding multi-userapplications. In a multi-node system the need to obtain system information from a serverversus the local viewer is key. With the implementation of System Points, GE Fanuc hasdelivered this important distinguishing feature. The list below summarizes the systempoints provided. The nomenclature of $Project refers to the server node while $Localrefers to the computer you are currently working at.

Dynamic Measurement SystemsSome parts of the world use grams, meters, and liters while others use pounds, feet, andgallons. The English vs Metric measurement systems have always presented a problemto integrators and OEMs who would like to design a system for today’s global world.CIMPLICITY Dynamic Measurement Systems allows you to do just that. Now you candevelop your CIMPLICITY HMI projects so you can dynamically switch betweenmeasurement systems. You can use the pre-configured English and Metric systems, oreven configure your own measurement systems. At runtime, you can simply switchmeasurement systems with a point and click. Now your screens will change not only thevalues displayed, but any associated units as well.

CIMPLICITY HMI – solving real world problems in a simple manner – the Best justkeeps getting Better!

Login APIGE Fanuc believes in an open system design approach to our software as exemplified byour collection of APIs that provide various open interfaces to CIMPLICITY HMI. WithHMI Version 4.01, we have added another open system API to allow you to develop andimplement your own login dialog to CIMPLICITY HMI. While the HMI productprovides security protection through a standard login dialog, high security applicationsmay require even more advanced user ID and password verification dialogs. You cancreate login dialogs with the flexibility, style, and security you require that can beexecuted from CimView or from scripts within the BCE (Basic Control Engine). Withthe LOGIN API, you can now create a user interface to meet your most demanding loginneeds.

CIMPLICITY HMI Version 4.01 – The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!

GFK-1189N Page 16

Permanent Alarm NotesLong time users of CIMPLICITY HMI recognize that its alarm management capabilitiesare the best in the industry. With HMI Version 4.01 the capabilities of alarmmanagement have improved again by allowing you to save alarm notes entered while thesystem is in operation, either on a permanent or temporary state. As users entercomments about a particular alarm, they can now be saved and reviewed by other users.

SPC EnhancementsCIMPLICITY SPC is a client / server application designed for a multi-user, multi-nodeenvironment. While a SPC server process is collecting, calculating, and monitoring yourprocess data against your configuration, users on HMI Viewers throughout your facilitycan be viewing this information via the SPC ActiveX charts and reports that are placed inCimView screens. The centralized configuration and collection of SPC is a key benefitand differentiating feature of the product. With centralized configuration, you areassured that your users are all working off of the same control limits. The CIMPLICITY SPC option has added some new features for Version 4.01 - RuntimeSpec-Limit Modifications and Runtime Printing.

Runtime Spec Limit ModificationsRuntime Spec Limit Modifications allow you to modify the Spec limits of your SPCanalysis from a Viewer. Now a user with the proper privileges can alter the Spec Limitsfor the process and have those changes performed back at the Server that is maintainingthe SPC configuration and calculations. Others users on the system will now see thesechanged limits.

Runtime PrintingThe SPC ActiveX control has a Print method that enables users to print the contents of anSPC chart or report to a user specified print device.

Queued Script ExecutionCIMPLICITY HMI’s Basic Control Engine provides more advanced capabilities thanmost packages on the market in that it allows for multi-threaded scripting (i.e. more thanone script can be executed at the same time). Queued Script Execution allows you tospecify the order in which you want your scripts to be executed. With this new feature, you gain greater control of your system by specifying the order in which you want yourscripts executed.

Long Node Name SupportCIMPLICITY HMI now supports Long Node Names (15 characters) in multi-userenvironments.

CIMPLICITY HMI Version 4.01 – The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!

GFK-1189N Page 17

Millisecond Time SupportHMI Version 4.01 has increased the resolution of the internal timestamps used to includethe ability to support milliseconds. Timestamp resolution of a millisecond will only becarried through the system when externally supplied from a device communicationsdriver or by an Alarm Management API application.

WebGateway Netscape SupportHMI Version 4.01 now supports the popular Netscape Navigator web browser byextending support to Java applets. With the WebGateway option you can now view yourCIMPLICITY HMI system data in either a Microsoft Internet Explorer or NetscapeNavigator web browser.

WebViewView your CIMPLICITY screens remotely over the Internet with WebView!

With WebView, you do not have to create special screens or redraw your screens to seethem over the Internet. CIMPLICITY HMI transforms and sends your screen images outto standard Internet browsers. WebView provides more than viewing - you can set pointsas well. WebView lowers total cost of ownership by eliminating the need to install andmaintain CIMPLICITY software on the users computers. WebView licensing is sharedon the HMI Server. When one user is done accessing the system, the license is freed upfor the next user to access. With WebView you have unprecedented power andflexibility.

WebView OverviewWebView is designed to extend the reach of CIMPLICITY information to users via theInternet or Intranet. WebView employs the latest Thin Client technology. In simpleterms, this means that bulk of the processing required to provide a user their graphics isperformed on a server node and just the graphic images of the user interface are sent outto the user’s web browser. One of the main advantages of the WebView option is that itrequires no CIMPLICITY software to be installed on the user’s computer. All that isneeded is a Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator browser. TheCIMPLICITY screens are transmitted from the CIMPLICITY Server out to the Internetbrowser. Up to 10 WebView concurrent user licenses can be supported from an HMIServer.

WebView Allows You To View Your Screens Across the Internet!

WebView or Standard HMI Viewer–Which One Should I Use?WebView is ideal for sharing CIMPLICITY information with a group of casual users.WebView uses shared licensing. When a user is connected to the Server and viewingdata, they are using the WebView license. When they are finished, that license is freedup for the next person. WebView allows users such as plant management, finance, orengineering to obtain access to the process data need to make their decisions. WhileWebView is ideal for the casual user of CIMPLICITY, GE Fanuc recommends thestandard CIMPLICITY HMI Viewers for dedicated operators who depend onCIMPLICITY for running and interacting with the process.

Information Types Points, (graphics though 3rd

The type of information you wish to display and the number of users are the primaryfactors that determine product selection. Screen creation is different for each product. With the WebGateway you need to create web pages (HTML documents) which cancontain point information as text or can be animated in ActiveX objects. With WebView, you do not need to create web pages. WebView will “slice off “ the graphics of yourexisting CimView screens and send them out to the web browser. If you need to shareyour actual CIMPLICITY screens that contain detailed information, including alarms orprocess graphics, then WebView is the preferred product.

The number of users that need to view CIMPLICITY information at the same time alsoshould be considered. The WebGateway is a very efficient and economical method forsharing CIMPLICITY point information with a large number of users. A typical use ofthe WebGateway would be the sharing of production counts or process data to a largenumber of users. If you need to share a limited amount of text based information to alarge number of users, then you could consider WebGateway.

WebView FunctionalityWebView is designed to present CIMPLICITY CimView graphic screens via webbrowsers. WebView provides for the viewing of data as well as performing setpoints.CIMPLICITY applications outside of CimView cannot be displayed in WebView. Forexample, CIMPLICITY applications such as the Workbench, Point Control Panel, ActionCalendar, or Quick Trends that operate in their separate windows outside of the CimViewwindow cannot be displayed in WebView. Similarly, WebView will not display thirdparty applications such as spreadsheets or databases.

Third party ActiveX objects which create pop-up dialog boxes may not display properlyin WebView. CIMPLICITY ActiveX objects such as Trending, Alarms, Recipes, SPC,and XY Plots can display information to users. Interaction with these ActiveX objects is

limited. If changing properties of these applications is required, a standard HMI Viewershould be used.

WebView Server Requirements and PerformancePerformance of the WebView is dictated by several factors including the Serverhardware, system loading, and Internet traffic. WebView is based on Thin Clienttechnology. This means that the Server is responsible for running the application anddelivering the graphics out to the client. Up to 10 WebView users are supported on anHMI Server. GE Fanuc recommends a minimum configuration of PentiumII/200Mhzwith 64MB RAM for a single user. Support for 10 users requires a minimumconfiguration of a dual processor PentiumII/450Mhz with 512MB RAM. A separateHMI Server is highly recommended to support applications of 5 or more users. TheCIMPLICITY HMI Server supporting WebView license can be of any size equal to orgreater than 75pts. GE Fanuc provides a web server for simple Intranet applications withthe product. For Internet applications, the user must purchase Microsoft’s InternetInformation Server.

Documentation EnhancementsCIMPLICITY HMI Version 3.2 introduced the Bookreader to provide the ability for youto search, view, or print the entire library of CIMPLICITY documentation on-line. WithVersion 4.01 we have improved the documentation itself by reorganizing, rewriting, andformatting the documentation so that it is easier to understand.

New Device CommunicationsCIMPLICITY HMI 4.01 offers several new device communications.

OLE for Process Control (OPC) ClientCommunications

HMI Version 4.01 introduces the OLE for ProcessControl (OPC) Client for CIMPLICITY® HMI. Thisopen systems standard allows HMI to take advantageof the hundreds of third party communication driverswhich are being developed. The CIMPLICITY OPCClient supports data acquisition from automation

equipment via OPC Servers. OPC is an emerging standard that is rapidly gainingacceptance among vendors of HMI and process automation products. As one of the firstHMI vendors to release support for OPC, GE Fanuc demonstrates its commitment toopen systems and the support of new, open technologies.

OPC is a new standard that builds on the success and strength of Microsoft Windows NT,Windows 95, and OLE (Object Linking and Embedding) technology. The design of OPCwas begun in 1995, targeted at providing a standard for interoperability among controlapplications, field systems anddevices, and business and officeapplications. OPC is endorsed byMicrosoft and the OPC Foundationthat developed the technicalspecification and which now includesover 140 members with broadrepresentation from the processcontrol industry including GE FanucAutomation.

OPC promises lower costs andincreased productivity for end-users,systems integrators, and processcontrol vendors alike by focusingcommunications issues on a singletechnology and strategy.
