According to Oxfam researchers, there are many other aspects of the agricultural processing and the food supply chain that also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions which are not taken into account by simple “food miles” measurements. Smallholder farmers in poor countries can often improve their income and standard of living if they can sell to distant export markets for higher value horticultural produce, moving away from the subsistence agriculture of producing staple crops for their own consumption or local markets.

Exports from poor countries do not always benefit poor people. Unless the product has a Fairtrade label, or a label from another robust and independent scheme, food exports might make a bad situation worse. Wages are often very low and working conditions bad and sometimes dangerous. Sometimes the food grown for export takes up land that had been used to grow food for local consumption so local people can go hungry.

Fairtrade is a strategy for poverty alleviation and sustainable development. Its purpose is to create opportunities for producers and workers who have been economically disadvantaged or marginalised by the conventional trading system. If fair access to markets under better trade conditions would help them to overcome barriers to development, they can join Fairtrade.

Fairtrade is a tool for development that ensures disadvantaged farmers and workers in developing countries get a better deal through the use of the international FAIRTRADE Mark.

In the UK, the Fairtrade Foundation was established in 1992, with the first products to carry the FAIRTRADE Mark launched in 1994. The Foundation does not certify towns or other groups, only products. However, we do run campaigns with local community groups aimed at boosting awareness and understanding of trade issues, and promoting the purchase of Fairtrade products as a way that ordinary people can make a difference to the lives of producers.

These campaigns have a set of goals, and receive a certificate of congratulation from the Fairtrade Foundation when they are reached. Once a local community declares its status as a Fairtrade Town (or university etc), they must be committed to continuing their campaigning and awareness raising.

Grampian Fire and Rescue Service has now joined this campaign.

Introduction

Page 3: GFRS Environmental Week Handout

The UK imports 40% of its food. Part of this is due to the demand for out of season fruit and vegetables, to which we have become accustomed as consumers. This can be good for our health – a more varied diet available more of the time. It can be bad for climate change – food flown or driven to the UK contributes towards greenhouse-gas (GHG) emissions.

Food miles describe the distance that food is transported as it travels from producer to consumer. In the UK, our food travels an amazing 30 billion kilometres each year. This includes imports by boat and air and transport by lorries and cars.

Food transport is responsible for the UK adding nearly 19 million tonnes of carbon dioxide to the atmosphere each year. Over 2 million tonnes of this is produced simply by cars travelling to and from shops.

Choosing food that is local and in season means it does not have to travel so far. Reducing food miles can have a dramatic effect on reducing carbon dioxide emissions.

This booklet shows the local farmers markets in Grampian where you can find good food close to you and gives examples of seasonal food!

Actions you can take that can help:

• Buy local. Purchase from local independent co-ops and grocers rather than the big supermarket chains. In the market, ask your local grocer, where the produce comes from or attend local farmers markets

• Eat and buy in season. By eating seasonally you get the most flavour and nutritional value and it is usually the most affordable. What is in season?

• In the supermarket, choose locally produced food, or environmentally friendly, sustainable brands such as Fairtrade and Rainforest Alliance over imported items.

• Try out some of the range of Fairtrade products at home. The range of products is growing all the time, and includes fruit, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, rice, honey and fruit juice.

• If you don’t see Fairtrade goods in your local shop or cafe, why not ask if they would consider selling Fairtrade in future? If enough people ask then shops and cafes will want to change to please their customers.

Farmers’ Markets have become a popular fixture across Aberdeenshire, presenting valuable opportunities for producers to increase sales, add value to their own produce and gain closer links with the customer. These markets also have a proven spin-off for local traders and businesses by attracting increased numbers of customers to market towns on market day.

You will find farmers’ markets across the North East in Aberdeen, Alford, Banchory, Elgin, Huntly, Inverurie, Macduff, Peterhead, Stonehaven, Torphins, Turriff and Westhill.
