from the Editor

“Hi” she said as she sat down next to me. I was on a bench in the mall waiting for my family to fi nish their shopping. I said hi and asked what her name was. “I’m Lucy,” she said, “do you like my new dress?” I allowed as how it was probably one of the fi nest dresses I had ever seen. “Where did you get it?” I asked? She said her aunt gave it to her, but her shoes came from China! She said she had been to China with her parents just last month. “That’s where My Mom-my is from,” she said proudly.

I noticed that the front of her black and white polkadotted dress was decorated with stickers. She no-ticed me looking and said, “I deco-rated my dress, don’t you think it looks better?” Yes, I thought it looked immeasurably better. “I think you need a sticker too,” she said. She retrieved a sheet of glittery stickers from her mother’s purse and proceeded to attempt to peel off the largest one. She was having a little trouble and asked, “Would you please help me?” As I peeled the sticker I asked. “Where shall we put it?” She looked me over and decided my arm would be the best place. When it would not stick to my arm, she placed it on the face of my watch with a beautiful three-year-old smile.

Our conversation continued until my family arrived. I introduced my grandsons to Lucy and then stood to go. “Must you leave?” she asked. When I said I was sor-ry, but it was time for me to leave she said “Well, I will see you…..next time!” As I walked away, she said one last thing. In her small

voice, with what seemed like true conviction, she said “I love you!” I stopped dead in my tracks, turned and with all the meaning I could muster assured her that I loved her too.

We continued on down the mall and were soon lost in the crowd. I looked back but could not see Lucy or her mother. I thought about her willingness to talk to a stranger and how much I enjoyed her young trust in what appeared to her to be a kindly old man. But her last words were what stuck in my head. How easy she found it to say I love you to someone she had just met. Kids are like that.

Too bad we adults are sometimes stingy with the important things in life. Things like saying I love you. It is so easy to get caught up in the daily grind and forget that those we love need to hear it. We become so comfortable with each other that we take for granted the

communication that is often longed for. We just assume that our loved ones know we love them and there is no need to keep repeating it. This month we will celebrate Valentine’s Day. Many will buy cards and fl owers and candy and consider our duty done for another year. Don’t let it happen. If you love someone, make it your goal to tell them every day. They need to hear it and you need to say it.

I looked at that heart sticker on my watch for sometime after my encounter with Lucy. It fi nally brushed off somewhere in the crowd of the mall. But as long as it was there I could still hear her little voice saying “I love you.” I deter-mined that this year I would leave no doubt in the hearts of those I love just where they stood in my affection.

You need to do the same.

Front entrance and signs

December 21st was a great day in the life of your Denver church plant. Rangeview FWB Church held its fi rst service there after nearly 8 months of work to get moved from it’s location in a school gym.

The new location is still a little ways from being fi n-ished. We still have some paint-ing, trim work, and lighting to complete, but the move allowed us to save the rent money we were paying the school as well as the new site. Double rent is no fun and even with a little unfi nished work lying around us, it’s money we felt could be better spent on ministry.

As people gathered on a cold, snowy day, smiles lit up their faces as they entered into what we would be THEIR church. 7-days a week, God has blessed us with a wonderful facility that sees a quar-ter of a million cars drive by it’s face every week. Signage issues we had with our former city at the school are no longer an issue as a prominent monument sign proud-ly announces the church’s presence on the highway while large, well

placed signs adorn the outer face of the storefront. For this work, it’s the best exposure the church has ever had.

We had a brief song set with no amplifi cation or visual help (we’re still waiting for that to be installed). No matter though, the people were excited to sing Christmas songs and listen to the preaching before we dismissed

for a wonder-ful meal in our new place. Ham, tur-

key, chicken, roasts, with all the trimmings lines our church walls as the ladies of our church served it up to an excited group of peo-ple. All in all it was a wonderful day for us and the best part for me when it was over was simply turning out the lights and leav-ing! No chair to put up..no sound equipment to disconnect, etc.. It was wonderful.

To all in Missouri we say thank you for supporting us and pray-ing for us. We are certainly not out of the woods fi nancially. At

the end of January, I had the great honor of being a part of the Saint Francois Association’s annual mis-sions conference which helps us.

Also, this month, I will be in Nashville for a missions training summit hosted by our National Home Missions department. After that, we will be having some folks from our Wyoming Church com-ing to help us with some of the trim work and fi nish painting in anticipation of our grand opening of the new site in time for Easter.

Your continued fi nancial support and prayers are truly needed at

this time. Our ac-count has dropped about $1000 in the past 60 days or so (as of this writing). The holiday season tends to do that to us. We need new churches sup-porting us at $50 a month and new individual givers at $10 a month. Frank

Webster in our state missions offi ce has done a tremendous job helping me with this as well but I need all the support I can get at this crucial time in our church’s history.

Your church plant is growing. As you can see, we’ve taken great steps since Becky and I arrived on the fi eld in 2001. We retired a large debt owed our national offi ce, we relocated the church to a school while we invested build-ing money from the sale of our old building that the city would

not let us update, and we’ve successfully navigated the move to a new storefront that gives us our best chance to grow to a healthy number. Your investment in our ministry is moni-tored to the last penny. On that, you have my word. I’m proud of the support I get from my home state. I’m proud to be a MISSOURI home missionary. I’m proud to share the show-me state’s love of Free Will Baptists everywhere I go here. YOU are a big reason for that. YOU are why lives are being changed for eternity. Because of YOU, people are being saved and discipled and a new church is taking root in the Rocky Mountain West.

Maxine Ankrom and Alvin Street were rec-ognized in Appreciation, Sunday, January 3, 2009 following evening services. Pastor Bill Swearingen requested the congregation to adjourn to the Fellowship Hall following services for a brief meeting. Maxine and Al were surprised when they realized the brief meeting was honoring them.

Maxine and Al, both devote a lot of time be-hind the scenes at Heritage Chapel Free Will Baptist Church, in Springfi eld, Missouri. They make sure the church is clean and decorations are in place. Both became members of Heritage in 1992. Over the years, Maxine and Al both have taught Sunday School Classes. Al also was the song leader and has been a board member for many years. They were recognized with a delicious cake, ice cream and punch. Along with the goodies, they were given framed Certifi cates of Appreciation and a gift certifi cate to Golden Corral restaurant.

Since 1942, Missouri has been visionary in its support of the Cooperative Plan. We have seen unprecedented growth in our efforts to get God’s work done together. When the State Association began it’s giving program in 1942 with $294.00, no one imagined that 66 years later we would be di-viding over three quarters of a million dollars between state and national works. Our state has consistently proven that God’s people have a mind to work, not only with their physical efforts, but with their fi nance as well.

We are happy to report that the Cooperative Fund receipts for 2008 totaled $781,912.55! We disbursed those funds along with the designated funds we receive in our offi ce monthly. Not only do all our State ministries benefi t but our National ministries and several para-church organizations that our Missouri Free Will Baptists support reap the reward of your faithfulness.

Following is the breakdown of our State and National ministries who re-ceive a percentage of our Missouri Coop. These allocations are approved by the State Association annually in our State Associational Meeting.

If you have been a Free Will Baptist for any length of time, you have been asked, “What’s the dif-ference in Free Will Baptists and the other Baptists?” And if you are like too many, your answer will include something about “once saved always saved” and if you think about it, footwashing will be in there somewhere. It seems that we are often ill pre-pared to answer this basic of our faith.

One great resource you can use is Dr. Robert Picrilli’s small book Understanding Assurance and Salvation. Published by Randall House in 2006, this book has become a standard in the defense and explanation of the teach-ings of Joseph Arminius. It is an easy to understand book and will quickly become your go-to source for answers.

Dr. Picrilli deals extensively with the passage in Hebrews 6:4-6, as well as gives answers to several Calvanistic objections to the idea of conditional salvation.

This book is available at Lebanon Bible and Bookstore and will be benefi cial to scholar and layper-son alike.

The Wednesday night Youth Ministry program at Mountain Grove’s First Free Will Baptist Church is alive and well, and reaping heavenly rewards. Four years ago, though there was al-ready a class for the younger kids and another for grades 7-12, the church revital-ized its youth programs, adding a stronger compo-nent for reaching the community’s unchurched children and their families. Utilizing Faith Weaver Friends curriculum in the lower grades, expanding its bus ministry, and focusing on evange-lism, First Free Will reached out to their neighbors and began to see a dramatic increase in par-ticipation in its youth programs. The ministry program for grades 7-12 also began to grow and see positive change in the lives of the church’s teens.

Due to an almost unbelievable re-sponse to the change in focus, in more recent history First Free Will was happily forced to divide its ministries into four different age groups, separating the youth into middle school and high school classes and the younger kids into pre-school and elementary ages. The pre-school program for ages 3 and 4 has 25 students on its reg-istry, with a regular attendance averaging near 15 kids. There are 2 regular teachers and anywhere from 1-3 helpers each week.

The Faith Weaver program for children in kindergarten through grade fi ve has gone from an aver-

age of seventy-fi ve children to over one hundred kids attending on Wednesday nights. Snak ‘n Yak, with 3 different classes for middle school kids in grades 6-8, has an enrollment of well over 50 students and an average attendance of 35-

40. With teens’ work, school, and class schedules, the church’s teen/young adult program for grades nine through college age still has over 20 “enrollees” and averages between 12 and 15 in attendance. Just over four years ago, approxi-mately 6-8 adults were involved in some facet of the church’s youth work. Now, between Bible lessons, crafts/activities, snacks, music, and transportation, more than 50 members of Mountain Grove First’s congregation are busily seeking to meet the needs of the community’s families through teaching their most precious

resource, God’s children, every Wednesday night.

Mountain Grove’s First Free Will Baptist Church, praising God for the increase, now has a Wednes-day night bus ministry that includes the use of two shuttle buses and two 11-passenger vans. In addition, numerous children are brought to Wednesday evening services by parents, friends, neigh-bors, and congregation members.

Through the church’s regular youth programs and activities, outreach events like Fall Harvest, Hallelujah, Christmas, and New Year’s celebrations, Faith Evange-

lism, and family/community service opportunities, the church has an-swered the call not only to reach out to the uttermost parts of the earth, but is dedicated to ministering to people from all walks of life, right in its own backyard, no mat-ter their present situation. Pastor,

Bruce Moore, stated, “We believe the key to success is listening to God, being obedient to His call, and when ministering to people, not to be selective. We minister to one and all.”

First Free Will Baptist Church’s congregation is thanking God for more than the large numbers of participants in its Wednesday youth ministries. The folks at First Free Will are rejoicing, not in num-

Raw Green Olives

By J. Mark Vandivort

I couldn’t get my car stopped fast enough to open the door, spitting and gagging. A paper bag full of raw green olives sat on the car seat beside me. About two blocks from John-ny’s house I had plopped one into my mouth. I had tasted green persimmons that made my mouth pucker, but those green olives seemed ten times worse! After my sons and I had stopped in north Phoenix to visit Johnny, he sent us on our way with a gift of olives, green and plump, picked from a tree in his yard. They looked wholesome and ready to eat. Not being from that area, I was completely unaware that olives must undergo a special process before they become the tasty tart treat that I enjoy pulling out of a jar.

Later, when I was telling Johnny of my experience of trying to eat one of his green olives, he roared with laughter and had his own story to tell. One day while Johnny was standing outside his church with a hose in his hand, watering the grass, a man walked by and stopped to talk for a few minutes. Seeing the heavy-laden olive tree, the visitor to Phoenix asked if he could sample one. Johnny replied, “Sure, help your-self”. Immediately after biting into a green olive, the man ran and grabbed the water hose to fl ush out his mouth. What he didn’t realize was that Johnny was draining the church’s baptismal tank!

Things are not always what they appear to be. The Bible says: “There is a way that seems right to a man,

But its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12, NKJ).

There is a message that you can trust, the Bible. My friend, Paul, a doctoral student, often said that one rea-son he believed the Bible to be true was its unvarnished presentation of real people’s real lives.

One of those real people is Jesus Christ. The writers of the New Testament were willing to put their lives on the line for presenting the story of Jesus’ resurrection. The Apostle Paul reminded the believers in Corinth that the resurrection was the foundation of their faith (I

Corinthians 15:1-4).

Paul explained that Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection happened in fulfi llment of Old Testament prophecies: for example, Isaiah 53. Many people had seen the risen Jesus face to face. After His resurrection, Jesus appeared to 500 people at one time, the major-ity of whom were still alive when Paul wrote to the Corinthian Church. All those people could have substantiated the accuracy of his writing. The Bible teaches that Jesus loved us and offered Himself as a vol-untary sacrifi ce for the sins of all humankind. Paul urged the fi rst century Christians not to follow every new teaching because it looked good or sounded good--”the truth is in Jesus” (Ephesians 4:21, KJV).

The raw green olives needed to be transformed in order to be suitable for human consumption. Our lives also undergo a trans-

formation when we choose to accept Jesus Christ as personal Savior. “Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold new things have come” (2 Corinthians 5:17, NAS).

bers, but in the ways that lives are being transformed. For example, at the church’s Faith Weaver Friends Hallelujah party, a parent was led to Christ by two mem-bers of the congregation’s Faith Evangelism team. This young mother, along with some other new Christians, has now received training in a recently-added Sun-day School class for new converts which is being taught by pastor’s wife, Dede Moore.

In addition, FWF teacher, Ray Bradley, recently jolted upstairs to the teen room on Wednesday evening, December 17, to share the exciting news that fi ve chil-dren had given their hearts to the Lord following the teen class’s dramatic presentation of the true Christmas story, based on Luke, Chapter 2.

Not only have there been a number of young people, as well as adults, at Mountain Grove’s First FWB Church accept Christ as their Savior through the Wednesday evening classes and other ministries, but several have followed His example in baptism. Transformations such as these are the indication of genuine success.

Mountain Grove First Church is beginning to see more and more families visiting the church and fi nding a body of loving, caring, Christians who are busily serving Christ through serving others. The church is truly committed to its mission statement: Worship, Win, Walk, Work.

Don’t you know that God loves a good baptism service! I am sure that His heart swells with joy as one He has recently forgiven of their sins lets everyone know by being baptized. As a pastor it was always a highlight to be able to announce to the congregation another baptismal service. We would like for the folks of Missouri to be able to rejoice with you and your church over the precious souls who are fi nding Je-sus as the result of your ministry. We will be featuring a page in the Gem monthly to celebrate what God is doing in our Free Will Baptist churches in Missouri by publishing the pictures of those you baptize. Please send them to us either by email (jpeg fi les work best) or print photos by regular mail. Please include the names of those in the pho-tos. Let’s rejoice together as God blesses our labors with fruit!

NASHVILLE, TN—Dr. Harry Reeder III, senior pastor at Briarwood Presbyterian Church (PCA) in Birming-ham, Alabama, will be the featured guest speaker during the March 8-12, 2009, Bible Conference at Free Will Baptist Bible College, according to President Matt Pinson. Dr. Reeder will address four plenary sessions during the conference.

President Pinson said, “Dr. Reeder is a well known PCA pastor, conference speaker, radio per-sonality, and church revitalization consultant. He is a conservative pastor of a large urban church commit-ted to putting biblical growth methods into practice in a postmodern society. His book, Embers to a Flame: How God Can Revitalize Your Church, is one of the best succinct books I’ve ever read on church revitali-zation, and I recommend it to every Free Will Baptist pastor.”

During an earlier 17-year pastorate at a PCA church he founded, Reeder saw the congregation grow from 38 members to more than 3,000. He is currently in his ninth year with the Briarwood congregation. He conducts a fi ve-day-a-week radio program (“In Perspective”), hosts church revitalization conferences twice a year, devotes time to leadership development and Christian manhood seminars, and is a member of the Board of Trustees at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia.

Two outstanding Free Will Baptist pastor-edu-cators have also been asked to address plenary ses-sions of the 2009 Bible Conference—Dr. Jeff Manning (North Carolina) and Dr. Stanley Outlaw (Tennessee).

Dr. Manning has been senior pastor at Unity Free Will Baptist Church in Greenville (NC) since 1991. He will speak four times. A 1986 FWBBC graduate, Manning serves on the Board of Free Will Baptist International Missions and is an adjunct professor at FWBBC.

He completed a Master of Divinity degree at Bob Jones University (1990) and a Doctor of Minis-try degree at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary (2002). He has written articles and book reviews for ONE Magazine and Integrity. The North Carolina na-tive was converted at age 10 and answered the call to preach in 1987.

Dr. Stanley Outlaw, pastor of Corner Stone Free Will Baptist Church in Murfreesboro (TN), will speak

three times to conference attend-ees. He served 31 years (1966-1997) on the Bible faculty at FWBBC and has been an adjunct fac-ulty member since 2002. In addition to his several edu-cational roles, he has pastored more than 45 years.

Dr. Outlaw is a 1962 FWBBC graduate. He earned the Mas-ter of Arts (1964) and Doctor of Philosophy (1975) degrees from Bob Jones University. He is a writer for the Randall House Bible Commentary series. He wrote the commentary on the book of Hebrews and the commentary on I-II Timothy and Titus.

The Bible Conference sched-ule will include a number of work-shops (Monday-Wednesday) on pastoral/preach-ing issues, theol-ogy and cultural trends, outreach and evangelism, music, and more. The music of FWBBC will be featured Monday and Wednesday evenings.
